1920réf. 92334n. l. Paris: Edouard-Joseph 1920. Fine. Original engravings by a theorist of Cubism Edouard-Joseph n. l. Paris s. d. 1920 14.2 x 17 cm En feuilles Suite of eleven original woodcuts by Albert Gleizes printed in red on Japon paper created to accompany the deluxe issue limited to thirty copies on Japon of Au pays du mufle by Tailhade. Wood engraving lends itself admirably to the plastic demands of Cubism: its large flat colour planes and the discipline of gesture it imposes on the engraver find a natural echo in the angular forms and geometrisation of volumes then sought by Albert Gleizes. Illustrating Laurent Tailhade's text in 1920 with eleven original woodcuts one of the very theorists of the movement thus transposed his pictorial vocabulary into the medium of the wood engraving making Au pays du mufle one of the most accomplished examples of the application of Cubism to book illustration. Rare suite of wood engravings from a Cubist livre d'artiste. Edouard-Joseph unknown

Presentation copy from Gleizes to Paul Lombard.Christie's: "1912 was a halcyon year for French Cubism. It was the year that the French Cubist school formed their group La Section d’Or; it was the year of the first of three ground-breaking exhibitions that united the Cubists artists and presented them to the public; and it was the year that Jean Metzinger together with his colleague Albert Gleizes published Du Cubisme — the most comprehensive and coherent survey to date of the theories and aims of the new movement.Metzinger and Gleizes developed many of their ideas about the new painting from the weekly discussions held in the home of Jacques Villon in the Paris suburb of Puteaux where they were joined by Villon’s brothers Marcel Duchamp and Raymond Duchamp-Villon Robert Delaunay Henri Le Fauconnier Robert de la Fresnaye Juan Gris Fernand Léger and the Russian sculptor Alexander Archipenko.".GLEIZES et METZINGER. Du “cubisme”. Deuxième édition. Paris Figuière 1912. In-8. Envoi a. s. de Gleizes à Paul Lombard.Provenance Estate of Paul Lombard. Expertise by Ségolène Beauchamp 86bis rue de Bellébat 45000 Orléans and Pierre Prévost 75 rue Michel Ange 75016 Paris. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- xi 1 334 pages 161 ills. 34 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; Few painters lived the intellectual adventures of the early twentieth century as intensely as Albert Gleizes. At the center of the public scandal over Cubism that broke out in Paris in 1911 he was with Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia in New York during the war and was one of the first European avant-garde artists to respond to the scale and vigor of New York life. Gleizes was also one of the few French painters of the 1920s to recognize non-representational painting as the logical development of Cubism. Gleizes' work as a painter is accompanied by an immense body of theoretical work addressing the question posed so starkly by Duchamp and Picabia: why should we paint What is the justification for the work of art This fascinating book follows Gleizes' argument as it evolves drawing on detailed analysis of works of art and both published and unpublished writings. It reveals Gleizes not just as a significant historical personality but as a man whose work and thinking remain astonishingly fresh and relevant to the needs of our own time. . 2001. 0300089643 .
