An early caricature work by Cappiello before his acclaim as a poster artist. Cappiello started his career illustrating in journals: Le Rire Le Cri de Paris Le Sourire L'Assiette au Beurre La Baionnette Femina and others. In 1898 he moved to Paris and his caricatures were published in Le Rire for the first time. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds. One page preface followed by 18 pochoir plates of the leading actresses of the Fin-de-Siecle Parisian stage with two plates of Sarah Bernhardt. Other actresses include Lucienne Breval Marthe Brandes Marie-Louise Marsy Lara Yahne Rejane Megard Marcelle Lender Lavalliere Lucie Gerard Cassive Marthe Mellot Simon Girard Mariette Sully Cecile Sorel and Jeanne Granier. The actresses are in costume and Cappiello's approach is both highly stylized yet also light and frothy caricature perfectly befitting the frivolity of the period. Leonetto Cappiello 1875-1942 is best known for his revolutionary poster designs. He got his professional start though as a caricaturist for publications such as "Le Rire" "L'Assiette au Beurre" and "Le Cri de Paris" and theater caricature was a major sideline of his. The caricatures in this set embody many of the qualities of his later posters -- their simplicity their fillip of drama etc. Condition: slight creasing in the lower corner. The plates have essentially detached from the spine as is typical and slight chipping to the lower extremity of the spine. A touch of soiling on the glassine. Esemplare di estrema rarità dovuta alle firme di importanti personaggi italiani dell’epoca, tra cui: Italo Balbo, Arturo Ferrarin e l’Ing. Elegante litografia di gusto raffinato, quale poteva essere nelle corde del celebre grafico e cartellonista livornese che trovò il suo massimo successo a Parigi ove si era trasferito sin dal 1898. Tra diverse sfumature del giallo e del rosa-viola raffigura una bella dama in atteggiamento voluttuoso. "Fremito d'amore", o "fremissement d'amour" è il titolo del valzer lento per pianoforte composto da Alfredo Barbirolli, autore di numerosi altri spartiti musicali dell'epoca.
