Menasseh Ben Yossef Ben Israel 1604-1657 was a Portuguese Sephardi rabbi kabbalist writer diplomat printer publisher teacher of the philosopher Baruch Spinoza and founder of the first Hebrew printing press in Amsterdam in 1626. This book is Ben Israel's only publication in Hebrew his other books were published in Spanish and Latin. Menasseh Ben Israel is an especially significant figure to British Jewry as he was the central advocate who successfully petitioned Oliver Cromwell to readmit Jews to England in the mid-1650s overturning the 1290 expulsion. Through his negotiations and writings he enabled the establishment of the first open Jewish community and synagogue in London. Despite his return to Holland at the end of his his efforts initiated the return of Jews to England for which he is remembered as the champion of British Jewish settlement. Presumably Menasseh Ben Israel gifted the book to his friend an important Ashkenazi Rabbi Moshe Shimshon Bacharach. Bacharach mentions Menasseh Ben Israel sever times in his responsa book 'Chavot Yair'. Both Moshe Shimashon and his son Yair Chaim read the book and left many marginal notes some of them appear to be critical of the text. Yair Chaim Bachrach was a Rabbi of the town of Worms and most likely due to financial need ended up selling the book to Rabbi Moshe Katz Naral who was a doctor and the Rabbi of Metz and came from an affluent family. Examples of Menasseh Ben Israel Hebrew hard-writing are scarce and few which makes this copy especially valuable. This copy does not contain the frontispiece portrait of the author not found in all copies does not contain the leaf at the beginning of the book with poems in praise of the books by rabbis does not contain last eight leaves in Latin 3-10 which include title contents and dedication by the author to Emperor Ferdinand III omitted from most copies. 1498réf. ABC_49311Colophon: Venice: Petrus Liechtenstein for Johannes Lucilius Santritter 1498. 20th-century limp vellum sewn on 2 thin vellum straps laced through the joints with the manuscript name of the wrong author and year of publication on the spine. The work is housed in a modern marbled paper slipcase. 4to. With a woodcut title page and numerous tables. Highly important 15th-century work on navigation which helped sailors navigate more accurately. According to Gunn the work "immediately helped to revolutionize ocean navigation. Prior to the Almanach navigators seeking to determine their position in the high seas had to correct for "compass error" the deviation of the magnetic north from the true north by recourse to the quadrant and the Pole Star. But this proved less useful as they approached the equator and the Pole Star began to disappear into the horizon. Zacuto's Almanach supplied the first accurate table of solar declination allowing navigators to use the sun instead."The work contains dozens of astronomical tables charting the position of the sun moon and five planets between 1473 and 1530. The calculations were based on the Alfonsine Tables and the work of other astronomers. As the data were presented in simple tables with the positions of a planet easily interpolated between entries the work was easy to use. Zacuto's success in fusing his mathematical and astronomical observations with practical aspects of oceanic navigation such as the preparation of sea charts and instruments vital for the most important navigators of the time undoubtedly makes him a major contributor to the creation of the world of today.Abraham Zacuto 1452-ca. 1515 was one the most important geographers and cosmographers in the age of Columbus. His astrolabe astronomical tables and charts played a fundamental role in Portuguese and Spanish navigation to America and India as they were used by Vasco da Gama and Columbus. The navigators to Brazil and India also took Zacutos charts with them. As such Zacuto is one of the men who helped usher Portuguese global expansion. With a later ownership annotation on the title page and contemporary annotations in the margins throughout. The vellum is somewhat creased and browned with a dent on the back. The lower corner of the first few leaves shows some thumbing with brown ink stains on some leaves a water stain in the lower outer corner of leaves 81 and 82 not affecting the text. 1963réf. 968641963. Hardcover. Near Fine. Three composition books. Small quartos. Modest wear mostly near fine. Heavily illustrated by the artist Ben Talbert one of the most important artists in the Los Angeles circle that revolved around Wallace Berman and his publication Semina. Berman and his circle were at the forefront of avant-garde cultural and artistic experimentation on the West Coast in effect the western equivalent of Andy Warhol and his Factory workers with sensibilities representing the Beat and early counterculture movements. These notebooks are from Talbert's most important period and the most important period for his circle when he was directly influenced by and collaborating with Berman and most of the artworks presage Talbert's most cherished and representative themes nudes intense sexuality S&M scenes and handwritten and illustrated plans for installations assemblages collages or sculpture. Several drawings and plans are initialed and dated although most are not as normal for sketchbooks. Related material laid in include several nude and mildly sexual photographs of Talbert and a woman named Gayle presumably his wife or girlfriend used by them as Christmas Greetings other clothed photographs of the couple a handmade Valentine from Gayle to Talbert several vintage color photographs of Talbert's framed work a couple of different invitations to memorial retrospectives of his works after his death in 1975 from a drug overdose at the age of 42 and several additional drawings by Talbert on a variety of different sizes of paper. The sketches ranging from fully detailed drawings to impressionistic nudes are executed in a variety of media: pencil pen and ink marker gouache colored pencil watercolor and a few in ball-point pen. There are 69 pages of reasonably fully executed drawings bound in plus an additional five laid in for a total of 74 pages of drawings. There are 21 pages of handwritten and illustrated plans for installations plus another two laid in for a total of 23 pages. There are about 14 pages of drawing exercises bound in where Talbert attempted to draw every conceivable object often more than a dozen objects to a page. There is one additional drawing mounted and used as a greeting card that we are reasonably certain is by Talbert as it is similar to his style and preferred subject matter a spurting penis but whose inscription: "Sam Luv Tony" gives us pause. While the drawings are appealing and interesting the plans for Pop installations assemblages and sculptures are fascinating especially considering the time in which they were conceived. They include chastity-belts shaped and illustrated as police badges and many variations on altered televisions mostly with sexual twists and innuendos. Talbert's work was the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the Andrew Roth Gallery in New York in March of 2007. This is previously unrecorded material representing vital and important work for an overlooked but important artist in the most interesting period of his career. hardcover

1970réf. 822481970. Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. It reads "Sdeh. Boker 28. 2. 70 Dear Mr. George P. Viegelmann Jr. I share entirely your view that it is vitally necessary for everyone in the Middle East to live in peace. I am expressing a private view: I would be ready to give up a great Part of the areas which we hold since the six day war if this would bring peace; by peace I mean friendship with our Arab neighbors and cooperation politically economically and culturally but perhaps only Russia can bring this about. I even doubt whether the American Gov. can achieve that. In the future there may be a change in Egypt. David Ben-Gurion." This letter is a very unique piece of history particularly in regards to Israeli-Arab relations and the study of peace in general. While publicly Ben-Gurion was the undoubted leader in Zionism privately at the end of his life he began to have other opinions. He desired peace even if it meant giving up land that they had fought to obtain. Ben-Gurion's thoughts on peace in his latter years is corroborated by the recent documentary Ben-Gurion Epilogue. This movie features footage that was taken in 1968 and only recently discovered. In the footage he explains that Israel's moral compass was inexorably tied to its treatment of the non-Jews living under its rule. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 16.5 inches. David Ben-Gurion was the primary founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. Ben-Gurion's passion for Zionism which began early in life led him to become a major Zionist leader and Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization in 1946. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935 and later president of the Jewish Agency Executive he was the de facto leader of the Jewish community in Palestine and largely led its struggle for an independent Jewish state in Mandatory Palestine. On 14 May 1948 he formally proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel and was the first to sign the Israeli Declaration of Independence which he had helped to write. Ben-Gurion led Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and united the various Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces. Subsequently he became known as "Israel's founding father." unknown books

1948réf. 24454In 1947 as the British mandate over Palestine established by the League of Nations in 1922 was about to expire the United Nations called for partition of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. Jewish leaders accepted the plan but Arab leaders announced that they would oppose its implementation by force. President Harry Truman had endorsed partition despite opposition within his administration. On March 19 1948 the U.S. shockingly reversed its position supporting partition; instead it called for a temporary United Nations trusteeship. David Ben-Gurion as head of the Jewish Agency masterfully worked to contain the damage. Less than two months after writing this letter Ben-Gurion and the recipient of this letter Rabbi Judah Leib Fishman Maiman both would help draft and sign Israel's Declaration of Independence. DAVID BEN-GURION.Autograph Letter Signed "D. Ben-Gurion" to Rabbi Yehuda Leib Fishman. March 23 1948 Israel. In Hebrew one page on The Jewish Agency for Palestine stationery. 8.5 x 11 in. Translation "Please convey to the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Palestine the following – As I was deprived of the possibility of taking part in the meetings of the Executive I ask to be allowed to appoint a member to be the head of Defence so that I can transfer this work from myself as soon as possible. I wish to point out that because of the remarks that were heard in the discussion of our answers to the American announcement I refer to the remarks of Golda Myerson and Kolotny I am of the opinion that paragraph 'C' should be changed by way of adding a demand for an immediate agreement that a temporary Government be formulated in accordance with the version that I gave to my Secretary Svi Marmion." Historical Background Ben-Gurion responded forcefully to the new American position in a statement to the Tel Aviv Press Club on March 20: "We shall not agree to any kind of trusteeship whether permanent or temporary even for the shortest time. We shall no longer submit to any foreign domination whatever. … The Jewish State exists and will continue to exist because we defend it. … our political program falls under three headings in the order I name them: security; a Jewish State; a Jewish-Arab alliance." On March 22 Abba Hillel Silver on behalf of the Jewish Agency indicated that the Agency would not discuss the American proposal for trusteeship as it had not yet been submitted to the Security Council. The next day the Jewish Agency for Palestine and the National Council of Jews of Palestine Vaad Leumi issued a joint statement that Israel intended to proceed to independence. Ben-Gurion was determined to strengthen their position by shaping his provisional government and making it clear that the Jewish state would come into being with or without international approval. Accordingly on March 25 Moshe Shertok Sharett sent the chairman of the U.N. Palestine Commission an urgent request for the establishment of a provisional government including a list of proposed members. The "'paragraph C'" referenced in the present letter undoubtedly corresponds to a passage in either the March 23 or March 25 statements to the U.N. For the full final text of both see Appendices A and B below. As noted the final wording was influenced by future Israeli prime minister Golda Meir and by Moshe Kolodny Kol. They may have been advocating for the wording that appeared in the third paragraph of the March 25 statement "the Provisional Council of Government thus designated be empowered in consultation with the United. Nations Commission to co-opt additional members representing groups both Arab and Jewish…" Rabbi Judah Leib Fishman Maiman 1875–1962 the recipient of this letter was born in Bessarabia and emigrated to Palestine in 1913. A renowned author and Talmudic scholar he was a founding member of Mizrachi. He helped draft Israel's Declaration of Independence and became Minister of Religions and War Victims. He served in the First Knesset until 1951. APPENDIX A STATEMENT ADOPTED BY THE JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE AND THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE JEWS OF PALESTINE VAAD LEUMI MARCH 23 1948 The Jewish Agency for Palestine and the Vaad Leumi have learned with regret and astonishment of the attitude adopted by the United States representative in the Security Council concerning the United Nations decisions on Palestine. The Jewish Agency and the Vaad Leumi declare: 1. The Jewish people and the Yichev in Palestine will oppose any proposal designed to prevent or postpone the establishment of the Jewish State. 2. We categorically reject any plan to set up a trusteeship regime for Palestine even for a short period of time. A trusteeship would necessarily entail a denial of the Jewish right to national independence. It would leave Palestine under a foreign military regime. 3. The failure and disintegration of the Mandatory administration the continuation of which was unanimously rejected by the United Nations necessitates the early arrival in Palestine of the United Nations Palestine Commission. The Provisional Council of Government of the Jewish State should be recognized without delay by the United Nations Palestine Commission so that authority may be transferred to it as envisaged in the United Nations decisions. 4. Upon the termination of the Mandatory administration and not later than May 16 next a provisional Jewish government will commence to function in cooperation with the representatives of the United Nations then in Palestine. In the meantime we shall do our utmost to minimize the chaos created by the present government and we shall maintain so far as lies in our power the public services neglected by it. 5. The Jewish people extends the hand of peace to the Arab people and invites representatives of the Arab population of the Jewish State to take their rightful place in all its organs of government. The Jewish State will be glad to cooperate with the neighboring Arab States and to enter into permanent treaty relations with them to strengthen world peace and to advance the development of all countries of the Near East. After a bloody Arab-Israeli conflict following the British withdrawal the State of Israel was proclaimed in May 1948. Ben-Gurion was designated the first Prime Minister a position he held for the majority of the next fifteen years. APPENDIX B THE JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE 16 East 66th Street New York 21 N.Y. March 25 1948 The Chairman United Nations Palestine Commission Lake Success New York Sir: In pursuance of the oral representations made by me to the Commission on March 17 on behalf of the Jewish Agency for Palestine and. the National Council of the Jews of Palestine Vaad Leumi concerning the appointment of a Provisional Council of Government for the Jewish State I have the honor now as a matter of urgency to reiterate the request that the Provisional Council of the Jewish State should be immediately established and that it be composed as follows: Mr. David Ben-Gurion Mr. Itzhak Ben-Zvi Mr. Fritz Bernstein Mr. Eliahu Berligne Mr. Eliahu Dobkin Mr. Meyer Grabovski Rabbi Judah Leib Fishman Mrs. Rachel Kagan Rabbi Wolf Gold Mr. Abraham Katznelaon Mr. Itzhak Greenbaum Saadia Khuvashi Mr. Eliezer Kaplan Dr. Georg Landauer Mr. Moshe Kolodni Mr. Evi Lurie Mrs. Goldie Meyerson Mr. Nachum Nir Mr. Moshe Shapiro Mr. David. Pinkas Mr. Moshe Shertok Mr. David Remez Mr. Berl Repetur Mr. Mordecai Shatner Mr. Zorach Warhaftig 2. The above list comprises all the Palestinian members of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Palestine as well as the fall membership of the National Council of the Jews of Palestine Vaad Leumi. Included are representatives of the following parties and groups: Palestine Labor Party Mapay General Zionists Mizrachi Orthodox Zionists Hapoel Hamizrachl Hashomer Hatzair now merged. Achditt Avoda Aliya Hadasha Wizo Yemenites Organization 3. It is proposed further that the Provisional Council of Government thus designated be empowered in consultation with the United. Nations Commission to co-opt additional members representing groups both Arab and Jewish not at present included in the membership of the Jewish Agency for Palestine or the Vaad Leumi. Negotiations with this object in view have been successfully concluded with some Jewish groups and are still in progress with others. 4. Upon the appointment of the Provisional Council of Government it is suggested that the United Nations Palestine Commission should instruct the Provisional Council to proceed with the establishment of a central administrative organ of government as indicated in Article 7 of Part I B of the Resolution of the General Assembly. 5. I venture in conclusion to point out that under Article 4 of Part I B of the Resolution of the Assembly if by 1 April 1948 a Provisional Council of Government has not been set up the United Nations Palestine Commission will be under the obligation to communicate that fact to the Security Council. It is earnestly hoped that the need for the Commission to report failure in this respect will be obviated by the immediate appointment of the Provisional Council of Government of the Jewish State. Written during his imprisonment in the Tower of London the History of the World consists of a million words spanning from the biblical creation of the world to 146 BCE. The work was intended to serve as an educational tool for Henry Prince of Wales 1594-1612 and includes numerous references to warfare law and kingship. It was entered 15 April 1611 in the Stationers' Register but not published until 29 March 1614 due to the death of Prince Henry. Once published James had it immediately suppressed and subsequently issued with no title page and therefore no authorial acknowledgement.; "In the century that followed the publication it was vastly influential. The book went through eleven editions in the 17th century outselling even Shakespeare's collected works. It was not until 5 January 1615 that a letter from Archbishop Abbot reached The Stationers Company telling them that he had express orders from His Majesty that the book should be suppressed and withdrawn from shops. By this time the book had nearly sold out and it does appear from the letter that the Archbishop may once have praised it." Raleigh Trevelyan; "Sir Walter Raleigh's book is called in by the king's commandment for divers exceptions but especially for being too saucy in censuring princes. I hear he takes it much to heart for he thought he had won his spurs and pleased the king extraordinarily." Letter from John Chamberlain Esq to Sir Dudley Carleton; Alexander Ross' continuation is titled: "The history of the world: the second part in six books: being a continuation of the famous history of Sir Walter Raleigh Knight: beginning where he left; viz. at the end of the Macedonian kingdom and deduced to these later-times: that is from the year of the world 3806. or 160 years before Christ till the end of the year 1640. after Christ". 1418138.
