1885réf. 138901885. Sommer Giorgio. Pesto. Basilica circa 1870s records the first Temple of Hera at Paestum the Archaic Greek sanctuary long known as the "Basilica." Built during the sixth century BCE at ancient Poseidonia in present-day Campania the temple is the oldest of the three monumental Greek temples surviving at Paestum. Sommer's photograph belongs to the nineteenth-century photographic documentation of classical sites in southern Italy when his Naples studio supplied architectural and archaeological views to travelers collectors and museums. Vintage albumen photograph approximately 8 x 10 inches matted. The print shows the standing Doric remains of the Temple of Hera I including its closely spaced exterior columns and surviving entablature. Printed along the lower margin: "2062 Pesto. Basilica Sommer - Napoli." The designation "Basilica" preserves the name given to the structure by early investigators who mistook it for a Roman civic building; later archaeological study identified it as a Greek temple dedicated to Hera. Sommer a German-born photographer active in Naples photographed Paestum and other Italian archaeological sites extensively during the second half of the nineteenth century. Founded by Greek colonists as Poseidonia Paestum preserves major evidence of Greek settlement in southern Italy and the architectural culture of Magna Graecia. Sommer's albumen views circulated images of these monuments during the formative decades of archaeological photography providing detailed records of their nineteenth-century appearance while also documenting the expanding market for photographs of antiquities.
