L?ampiezza dell?indagine svolta ha permesso all?autore di recuperare importanti materiali sconosciuti su opere ed artisti del Rinascimento connessi col tema (Paolo Uccello, Desiderio da Settignano, A. Rossellino, Verrocchio, Benedetto da Maiano, Michelangelo, Raffaello). The genesis and the early vicissitudes of two great works by Donatello are reconstructed thanks to numerous as yet unpublished sources. A great deal of information is achieved regarding the dates of the bronzes, their first placement, original aspect, meaning and function. 2022ill., br. Donatello (1386 circa-1466) è stato uno dei più grandi artisti del Rinascimento italiano, al quale sono stati dedicati numerosi studi monografici nel corso dei secoli. L'importanza di alcune opere, tuttavia, ha portato gli studiosi a concentrarsi prevalentemente su un numero limitato di creazioni, spesso monumentali, a Firenze o in altre città italiane, tralasciando in parte una produzione mobile che ha molto contribuito alla fama dell'artista nel suo tempo. Un eccezionale nucleo di tali opere è stato raccolto dai musei statali di Berlino grazie a uno studioso, Wilhelm (von) Bode (1845-1929), conoscitore straordinario e agguerrito esperto delle pratiche del mercato dell'arte. La maggior parte di questo insieme si trova tuttora a Berlino, ma la storia tragica del Novecento ha portato alla distruzione o alla dispersione di alcune opere - come due importanti sculture recentemente riscoperte nel Museo Pus?kin di Mosca a seguito delle ricerche di Neville Rowley, curatore a Berlino e autore del presente libro. Rowley ripercorre qui la storia di Donatello a partire dalle opere conservate nel suo museo, spaziando con naturalezza dalla Firenze del Quattrocento alla Berlino prima ottocentesca e poi occupata dall'Armata rossa. Accanto ai capolavori consacrati, come la Madonna Pazzi o il Putto con tamburello, compaiono opere ingiustamente trascurate e talvolta scambiate per falsi, ma anche il San Giovanni Battista di bronzo e la Flagellazione marmorea ritrovati a Mosca nel 2015. Questo libro non è né una nuova monografia su Donatello né un catalogo delle opere donatelliane di Berlino, e neppure una storia dei musei berlinesi: è un po' tutto insieme, in una volta sola.
