The Franco-Belgian situationists base themselves on the same principles as Pascal, Descartes, Croce and Gide. Action precedes emotion. You only begin to feel religious after you have muttered your prayers. According to Scandinavian situationist philosophy action is the result of emotion and arises out of emotion. Emotion is a primary, non-reflective intelligence; passionate thought/thinking passion. We are not saying that the French method is wrong or that it cannot be used successfully. We merely say that our two outlooks are incompatible, but they can be made to supplement one another. The second Situationist International is a freely organised movement. It is a voluntary association of autonomous work groups. At the moment there exist four such groups on the Hallandsasen in the southern part of Sweden, and two more in Denmark and Finland. It also works together with the German avant-garde group SPUR in Munich, whose books have partly been published at Draka-bygget. The latest, SPUR im Exil, caused a pornography and blasphemy case to be brought against the group in the court of Munich. A periodical against popes, politicians and atomic bombs called Drakabygget has been edited since 1962, with the journalist and painter Katarina Lindell as editor. … (Seite 6; aus d. "In 1915, Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) changed the future of Modern art when his experiments in painting led the Russian avant-garde into pure abstraction. He called his innovation Suprematism - an art of pure geometric form meant to be universally comprehensible regardless of cultural or ethnic origin. His Suprematist masterpieces, including Black Square (1915) and White Square on White (1920-27), continue to inspire artists throughout the world." [blurb]

A beautifully-produced bilingual (French and English) monograph on Exter, with several hundred color plates. Unfortunately, the scholarship is not on a par with the production values: several dozen fakes are reproduced as authentic works here, and one can only guess at the possible motivations (I suppose it is to "authenticate" the fakes, all of which, interestingly enough, are in a "Collection privee" in Paris). Filatoff, furthermore, seems to know next to nothing about art. Finally, the English text has been prepared by someone with limited abilities as a translator. Still, this is the first major monograph (besides one in Russian) dedicated to one of the most important and intriguing Russian avant-garde painters. Furthermore, there is an extensive section on Exter's role as a book artist, especially her unparalleled illuminated manuscripts. This aspect of her work had been almost entirely ignored by other scholars. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth. FINE AND BRIGHT, in a fine dj. Until some capable scholar comes up with something better, this will be the best introduction to Exter's work.

""In this challenging collection of fifteen essays, most of which originally appeared in October, she explores the ways in which the break in style that produced postmodernism has forced a change in our various understandings of twentieth-century art, beginning with the almost mythic idea of the avant-garde. Krauss uses the analytical tools of semiology, structuralism, and poststructuralism to reveal new meanings in the visual arts and to critique the way other prominent practitioners of art and literary history write about art."
