1767rif. 45831Geneve 1767. Original blue cardboard binding with contemporary handwritten paper title-label to spine. Pencil-numbering to inside of boards. A very nice and clean copy. Woodcut vignette to title-page. With the ex-libris of the notes Danish book collector K.F. Plesner to inside of front board. Rare first edition of this interesting anonymously written continuation of Voltaire's Candide which wraps up the adventures of the hero. "Turning his back on both Voltarian satire and scepticism the novelist proposes a moralistic fable - the focal point of which is a rehabilitation of Leibniz's Theory of Optimism. The main body of the novel tells the story of Candide and his new wife the noble Zénoïde in their sumptuous Copenhagen townhouse. Before achieving this happy state however the couple endures various trials and tribulations reminiscent of the newly minted gothic genre. "Candide au Dannemarc" also features a satirical portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau." Éduard M. Langille from the introduction to the new edition of "Candide au Dannemarc" edited by him. Voltaire's "Candide" had inspired a sequel that appeared in 1760 which is attributed to Charles-Claude-Florent de Campigneulles but which might be by Henri-Joseph du Laurens. The present work is a direct continuation of that sequel although it ignores the happy ending of the previous work but evidently from the preface it is not written by the same author. It has still not been determined who the actual author is.The part on Rousseau pp. 148-167 in the present work has become quite famous portraying him satirically as trying to make a living in Copenhagen from copying music while plotting to escape to America. The novel ends with Candide leaving Denmark to be the Danish ambassador in Russia.A secoond edition appeared in 1769. paperback

1953rif. 76489Barcelona: Edicions Hora 1953. First edition in Catalan Llull's native tongue and the first edition with Campany aquatints. One of XVI special copies. Text printed in Catalan Llull is known for being among the first authors to use his vernacular language Catalan to communicate his ideas. Folio . 175 1 pp. with 11 full page hand-colored etchings drawn engraved and colored by the artist and ten large chapter headings all signed in pencil by the artist. Loose as issued in vellum-backed chemise with gilt spine lettering. Housed in a custom acrylic slipcase. A wonderful copy. This is a Catalan translation of Llull's 1305 although first published in 1512 work entitled Liber de Ascensu et Descensu Intellectus The Book of the Ascent and Descent of the Intellect. Ramon Llull is often thought of as an alchemist of the first order but strictly speaking he was a philosopher/theologian. His magnum opus Ars Magna displays his chief theme; the understanding of eternal truths by way of the intellect. While not himself an alchemist the seekers of the philosopher's stone were very influenced by Llull's ideas. In this book Llull describes the movement of the intellect through the many levels of understanding which some Renaissance alchemists such as Heinrich Khunrath interpreted as analogous to the transmutation process in alchemy. This striking volume was issued in an edition of 165 copies. This copy is one of XVI #VII copies containing an original drawing of one of the plates or of 2 of the vignettes a complete set of the proofs a series of sanguine proofs of the plates and the vignettes and the final proof of all the plates. It is the most desired format. Ramon de Capmany y de Montaner 1899 - 1992 was a Catalan painter engraver and bibliophile. He trained as a painter at the Escuela de la Lonja where he studied under the supervision of Francesc Labarta. He was one of the members of the the Evolutionists and one of the regulars of the Sala Pares. The Evolutionists were an artistic group from Barcelona in the aesthetic sphere of Noucentisme and who rejected programmatic orthodoxy and influenced by Cezanne and the Fauvists developed a personal work constructed and of austere colors. Mainly a landscape painter he mostly painted the surroundings of the Montseny Massif and the old part of the city of Barcelonain a naturalistic style. He also illustrated bibliophile editions such as this one. He held the position of curator in the board of the Ateneo Barcelones during the presidency of Pedro Gual Villalbi between 1952 and 1962. Some of his works can be found in the National Art Museum of Catalonia. One of the proofs of the work apart from the one designated to be signed by the artist is dedicated by Capmany to a Mr. Riera with the following words: ‘Prueba dedicada al Sr. Riera por el artista. Ramon Campmany.’ An original steel etched plate one used in the making of this volume comes with the work. It’s an additional object and no other copies have such a plate. This plate was a gift from the artist to the same Mr. Riera. Edicions Hora hardcover

Contemporary flexible ribbed black cloth post-binder nickel plated screwposts at gutter margins minor edgewear VG. This series of photographs captures the historic gold mining by the last gold dredge to operate on Foots Creek in Southern Oregon on the property of Edward Dole. Several dredges and placer mining operations mined Foots Creek from the 19th well into the 20th Century with one dredge owned by the Rogue River Gold Mining Co. known as the Ferry Dredge dredged both forks of Foots Creek until 1935 when it was moved to Graves Creek. Under the direction of “Wicks the Boss” this dredge was brought in unassembled by railroad in 1939 and “this was his 35th dredge.” The photos show the steel hull mass boom erecting the steel framework framing the steel gantries for the dredge installing the winches as well as the massive 67 bucket line ladder built by New York Engineering Co. Yonkers NY. The newly constructed dredge shown here proceeded to work it’s way up the creek digging 20 feet below the water line and moved 4000 yards daily through the screening and wash plant with conveyor belts stacking the tailings behind. In March 1941 just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor the dredge was dismantled and moved to another location by the Murray Dredging co. although mounds and walls of rock paralleling the creek still offer visible signs of its operation. Foldmarks and a couple of mild creases paper slightly age-toned but overall a very good letter written in a legible hand. An interesting early original letter with a contemporary account of Captain William Waldo’s efforts to deliver supplies in 1850 to starving gold prospectors in the Sierra Nevada Mountains who arrived there during the California Gold Rush 1848-1855. “William Waldo 1812-1881 was a candidate for Governor of California in 1853. He was born in Harrison County Virginia now part of West Virginia but spent most of his life in Missouri where he was a merchant and steamboat captain. In 1849 he joined the gold rush to California at the head of a wagon train. In California the next year reports arrived of impending starvation among numerous immigrants on the Nevada side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Waldo put great effort into recruiting and delivering supplies for them and became well known for his relief attempts. In 1853 the Whig party nominated Waldo as their candidate for Governor but he narrowly lost to the incumbent John Bigler. Following his defeat he returned east first to Minnesota and then back to Missouri where his wife and children had remained. In his later years he moved to Texas where he died” Wikipedia. “About 1852 an act was passed by the California Legislature partly reimbursing Mr. Waldo for his relief and efforts were made in other states to have the legislatures repay him for aid to their citizens or to urge Congress to do so but these appeals were in vain” St. Clair County Personalities: William Waldo// St. Clair County Courier Osceola Missouri 27 June 1940 p. 2. The letter starts with the discussion of the compiler’s family issues and proceeds to local news including “a continuous railroad from this region to the East in a few years” the expenses of Captain William Waldo and his property stolen by “the emigrants” actions of other Waldo family members and the author’s initiative to raise awareness of William Waldo’s relief efforts in the Legislatures of Virginia Missouri Illinois and Kentucky as well as in the U.S. Congress. Excerpts from the letter: “Dear Father Thomas arrived here in good health three days since and your letter came to hand this morning. I think he intends to remain here with me but it is hard to tell what course he would pursue. You may rest assured I shall make every effect an send him to school. It would have been much better had he arrived a few months either sooner or later as I then could have given him a fair trial but I shall have to be absent from home most of the time for the next two months and he may have leave some time during my absence. I have not yet drawn from Thomas his views but shall in a day or two make some propositions to him for his future conduct. Jedidiah is well and making fine progress in his studies but seems somewhat restless and I must fear will be inclined to go to California or Santa Fe should he quit school this summer. I think he had better be kept at school until he graduates which will take one or two years longer by that time he might become more stable and firm in his views for it seems to be a crisis in all our family when passing from boyhood to complete manhood. I have had much conversation with him and write him frequently and think if he can be kept from committing some act of folly in the next two or three years that he may make a man of no little importance and if kept at school he would go forth to commence lide a complete scholar which I think of vast importance and not to be estimated in many. <…> I find he is very irratable sic! which it greatly increased by <…> of spirits occasionally <…> and my impression is that it would be better for him not to return home this summer <…> My love to Mother and she can rest assured that I will leave nothing under to take care of Thomas. There will be a continuous Railroad from this region to the East in a few years and then we shall look for you & mother if you do not come sooner. The kins are all well in this country. William Marten in Santa Fe at last accounts. Letters from W. Waldo in California to 8 January in good health and spirits but pretty well through in a many way. Spent sum 25 or 30 thousand dollars releasing the emigrants three months time had a large amount say 10 or 15 thousand dollars of property stolen during his absence and in any way got through about $50000 in assisting the emigrants. I have no ideas when he will return. His family are yet in Illinois but will return. Janus Marten is in bad health in California but quite rich. Joseph Waldo & Samuel Waldo in Oregon all well last accounts. Calvin and family are all well he has recorded his grand health but is lame. <…> I have had no letter from Mortimer this month. I sent him some papers giving accounts of W. Waldo’s opperations sic! in California & hoped he would have resolutions in his favor passed through the Legislation of Va. Missouri Illinois & Kentucky have all passed memorials to Congress in his behalf <…>” unknown

Using the Linnaeus’ system of sexual classification of plants he prepared very highly detailed texts and 1700 prints many of them of new species. But the publication of the work was beset by problems. First sent to Venice the plates were never completed. Later the French invasion of the Iberian peninsular sent the Portuguese government then Veloso and his manuscripts into exile in Brazil where he died in 1811.
