1905réf. 32109Godthaab Greenland ca.1905. Winter Sports of a Greenlandic Family An attractive image showing a family of Greenlanders sledding and skiing down a hill likely produced by Lars Møller Greenland's premier printer or by Møller's youngest son Steffen. The illustration shows a family of seven Greenland natives sledding down a hill while two other youngsters ski alongside with one of the skiers in the process of falling. Other winter sports enthusiasts cavort in the distance and the stark Greenland landscape is ably depicted. Lars Møller an accomplished printer and illustrator was the dominant figure in Greenlandic printing in the last quarter of the 19th century producing much of the printed output in the country. His son Steffen succeeded his father and produced impressive works in his own right including a native language speller from which this illustration may be an example. Worn along left edge small closed tears along top and bottom edges of center fold. Two old soft secondary fold lines. Good. Knud Oldendow The Spread of Printing: Western Hemisphere Greenland Amsterdam: Vangendt & Co. 1969 pp.68-69 and passim. unknown

Full leather binding with gilt lettering & decoration to spine gilt ruled borders on both boards all edges gilt marbled endpapers engraved frontispiece and title page 6-1/4" x 4” 434 pp. Aucher’s name appears in three different versions on the first leaf: Armenian transliterated Armenian and Latin dated 1847. George Gordon Lord Byron traveled to the Island of St. Lazar where Father Pascal Aucher 1774-1854 taught him Armenian. Together they published Grammar of the English and Armenian Languages in 1819 and contributed to Aucher’s 1821 English Armenian Dictionary. Byron was devoted to the Armenian language writing: “I learned the language of the Armenians in order to understand how and what language the Gods spoke for the Armenian language is the language of the Gods and Armenia is the homeland of the Gods and the Gods come from the Ararat valley.”A translation of twenty-four prayers one for each hour of the day of St. Nerses the Graceful translated into twenty-four languages. This is the culmination of an effort that first had 6 10 14 and then 16 translations. This effort was likely from many of the Mekhitarist monks at San Lazzaro degli Armeni. The monastery was founded in 1715 by twelve monks; when Byron visited there were 70; today there are 12 monks and five novices. Despite the small population St. Lazzaro has been a major center of Armenian studies for centuries and still maintains the third-largest library of Armenian materials in the world. This polyglot prayer book is notable not just for its place in Armenian history and the spread of Orthodoxy but it is also a typographic success in acquiring the various fonts. In Insula S. 1938réf. 9564Manipay Sri Lanka 1938. Very good. Two albums leather over board: one 4¾" x 7¼" string-tied; one 8" x 10½" metal brads. A total of 164 B&W and sepia photographs corner-mounted to 86 pages 4 photos laid in 34 pp. blank. Photos range from 1½" x 1" to 6" x 8" and 19 are captioned. One album good due to lacking front board else very good or better: light scuffing to covers; one album with moderate offsetting to pages not affecting photos; a few photos spotted; a few loose or chipped; 1 taped and 1 may be lacking. This is a great collection of photos showing the life and work of Dr. William John Jameson who spent 15 years transforming the first hospital and medical school in Sri Lanka. Rev. Dr. John Scudder the first medical missionary to Ceylon arrived in 1819 and began what is believed to be the first medical mission dispensary in the world. In 1848 Dr. Samuel Fisk Green founded Sri Lanka's first hospital and medical school which came to be known as Green Memorial Hospital GMH. Jameson was a missionary doctor from Auburndale Massachusetts who came with his wife to Manipay in 1923. Son William Jr. and daughter Gladys were born there in quick succession and per limited histories we found online and evidence in present photos the family was esteemed in their community. According to the Jaffna Medical Journal Vol. 16 No. 1 March 1981 Jameson: "transformed this hospital scene for the next 15 years and enjoyed tremendous popularity . . . He was an able surgeon: he performed over 500 operations annually; an efficient administrator and fluent in Tamil . . . He secured grants from the Government and donations from the people and erected several buildings and built up endowments . . . raised the professional standard of his assistants by sending the doctors for postgraduate training abroad . . . equipped the hospital with X-ray plant ECG recorder BMR apparatus and Choul apparatus for the treatment of cancer." The family stayed in Manipay until 1938. The namesake Jameson Block at GMH has 18 rooms for neuro-rehabilitation is the first and as of 2024 still the only such service in Sri Lanka's Northern Province. These albums mainly hold family photos and nearly all the captions point out young "Billy" including a shot with his "birthday presents - Temple given by natives." A 1927 greeting card has a photo of Gladys and a poem: "This is my year / To send Christmas cheer / And a glimpse of me / In my first saree / Billy Mother and Dad / Share Greetings with 'Little Glad' / Mission Bungalow Manipay Ceylon." There are also large fantastic shots of native nurses all in white including "Miss McNeil and 1st Graduating Class of" GMH as well as what seem to be hospital staff and community elders some in saris some in suits. Two images reveal the "Governor's visit" and we see Jameson with a cake iced to celebrate the hospital's 75th anniversary. There are about a dozen views of hospital buildings beds and inner workings like the "1st portion of non-paying ward" and a great series of ten shows natives gathered - cooking dancing playing instruments - as the doctor and his family stand in what appears to be a central position of honor. Lovely photographs of an important missionary doctor his family and hospital work in Sri Lanka. unknown
