The Emprise of Poetry analyzes the insidious entwinement of anti-Americanism and antisemitism in modern and contemporary German culture through the writings of one of its most acclaimed literary figures: Dresden native Durs Grünbein 1962-. Michael Eskin offers an unprecedented view of the American-cum-Jewish discontents at the heart of modern and present-day German culture through the exemplary lens of the work of Durs Grünbein the most widely translated and globally honored living German poet and the only one to have been hailed as the Berlin Republic’s “most qualified contemporary candidate for the office of German national poet.” Yet as Eskin outlines Grünbein’s work contains a paradoxical and tension-filled twofold self-construction: as an idiosyncratically ‘American’ poet and Ezra Pound’s vociferously philosemitic heir who merely happens to be writing in German as it were conjoined with an avidly anti-American German poet who writes emphatically and not always savorily as a German and a self-proclaimed heir to the legacies of Celan and Kafka – most notably on matters American and Jewish. Against the foil of these tensions Eskin traces and documents postwar German high culture’s persisting inability to purge itself of ideological toxins that leach into the mainstream from centuries-old prejudices and antagonisms revolving around Germany’s love-hate bond with America as well as its ostensibly enduring suspicion and antipathy toward Jews. Eskin’s deep dive into the ‘American’ Grünbein’s apparent philosemitism coupled with the German Grünbein’s antisemitically-inflected anti-Americanism reveals the fault lines underlying the complex and contradictory legacies and contexts of postwar German culture. paperback

A study of how Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels respond to and represent the world through characters that are profoundly limited in their understanding of the systems that bind them. How has a writer known principally for his contained domestic novels come to represent the most dynamic elements of world literature In Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature Chris Holmes expands our understanding of how world literature engages with the most pressing crises of the 20th and 21st centuries by examining Ishiguro’s fascination with characters who are profoundly constrained in their ability to understand global systems to which they are subject. Rather than following the established pattern of so-called global novels which crisscross the planet exhibiting a knowing cosmopolitanism Ishiguro’s fictional engagement with the world comes principally in the form of characters who are cut off from the global systems that abuse them. By examining the ways in which Ishiguro foregrounds the in-process thinking of those who fail to comprehend their place in the flow of politics culture and ideas Holmes positions Ishiguro as the great chronicler of everyday lives and as such prepares a mode of reading world literature that questions the assumptions for how we live and think with others when each of us is deeply limited. paperback

1500rif. 007113Spain 1500. No Binding. Very Good. A well-preserved vellum leaf from a late medieval Iberian Gradual of Antiphonal written in a clear Gothic textura hand with square neumes on four-line red staves. The text is taken from the Passion narrative of Christ in Gethsemane including the phrases "Vigilate et orate ut non intretis in tentationem" and "Pater mi: si possibile est transeat a me calix iste" identifying it as part of the Holy Week liturgy very likely Maundy Thursday or the Tenebrae offices. Recto and verso each contain six lines of text and music. The script shows the characteristic angularity and compressed minims associated with late 15th-century Castillian or Aragonese monastic production. The musical notation is composed of uniform square notes in dark brown ink the staves ruled in red. Margins generous indicating the leaf was not trimmed. Vellum is clean and supple Some minor wrinkling and cockling small patch of adhesive residue at corners and faint offsetting but overall with strong dark text and notation and excellent survival of ruling and musical lines. No losses. Ships unmatted and unframed unknown

This beautiful new book from literary critic Stanley Corngold tells the little known story of Mann's early years in America and his encounters with a group of highly gifted emigres in Princeton which came to be called the Kahler Circle with Mann at its center. The Circle included immensely creative mostly German-speaking exiles from Nazism foremost Mann Erich Kahler Hermann Broch and Albert Einstein all of whom during the Circle's nascent years in Princeton were "stupendously" productive. In clear engaging prose Corngold explores the traces the Circle left behind during Mann's stay in Princeton treating literary works and political statements anecdotes contemporary history and the Circle's afterlife. Weimar in Princeton portrays a fascinating scene of cultural production at a critical juncture in the 20th century and the experiences of an extraordinary group of writers and thinkers who gathered together to mourn a lost culture and to reckon with the new world in which they had arrived. paperback

Metafiction has long been associated with the heyday of literary postmodernism—with a certain sense of irresponsibility political apathy or outright nihilism. Yet if as is now widely assumed postmodernism has finally run its course how might we account for the proliferation of metafictional devices in contemporary narrative media Does this persistence undermine the claim that postmodernism has passed or has the function of metafiction somehow changed To answer these questions Josh Toth considers a broad range of recent metafictional texts—bywriters such as George Saunders and Jennifer Egan and directors such as Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino. At the same time he traverses a diffuse theoretical landscape: from the rise of various new materialisms in philosophy and the turn to affect in literary criticism to the seemingly endless efforts to name postmodernism’s ostensible successor. Ultimately Toth argues that much contemporary metafiction moves beyond postmodern skepticism to reassert the possibility of making true claims about real things. Capable of combating a “post-truth” crisis such forms assert or assume a kind of Hegelian plasticity; they actively and persistently confront the trauma of what is infinitely mutable or perpetually other. What is outside or before a given representation is confirmed and endured as that which exceeds the instance of its capture. The truth is thereby renewed; neither denied nor simply assumed it is approached as ethically as possible. Its plasticity is grasped because the grasp the form of its narrative apprehension lets slip. paperback

What happens when fashionable forms of unserious speech prove to be contagious when they adulterate and weaken communicative spheres that rely on honesty trust and sincerity Demonstrating how the tension between irony and avowal constitutes a central conflict in Fontane’s works this book argues that his best-known society novels play out a struggle between the incompatible demands of these two modes of speaking. Read in this light the novels identify an irreconcilable discrepancy between word and deed as both the root of emotional discord and the proximate cause of historical and political upheaval. Given the alarm since 2016 over unreliability falsehood and indifference to truth it is now easier to perceive in Fontane’s novels a profound concern about language that is not sincere and not meant to be taken literally. For Fontane irony exemplifies a discrepancy between language and meaning a loosening of the ethical bond between words and the things to which they refer. His novels investigate the extent to which human relationships can continue to function in the face of pervasive irony and the erosion of language’s credibility. Although Fontane is widely regarded as an ironic writer Tucker’s analyses reveal a critical distance between his works and the prospect of irony as a dominant idiom. Revisiting Fontane’s novels in a post-truth age brings the conflict between irony and avowal into sharper relief and makes legible the stakes and contours of our own post-truth condition. paperback
