Pencil notation of title on rear on which some words are illegible as shown in title very good From the series 'Views of British Columbia and Vancouver Island for sale'. Richard and Hannah Maynard moved from Cornwall England to Canada in 1852. Richard had been an apprentice boot maker in England and upon arrival in Bowmanville he again set up a shop to do his trade. In 1858-59 and 1862 Richard left his family to prospect gold. During this time Hannah began studying photography. In 1862 the family moved to Victoria. After the move Richard went up the Stikine Rover placer mining while Hannah and the family remained in Victoria. It is believed that it is during this time that Hannah first opened 'Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery'. Richard returned in 1863 to find her successfully entrenched in the business. Hannah taught Richard the photography skills she had learned. As it was somewhat usual for a woman to be a professional photographer during that time there is often confusion as to who actually took some of the photographs his name often being attributed to her work and vice versa. Richard pursued his photographic interest in the wilderness as well as opening a new boot shop in Victoria it was common at the time to be a professional photographer on the side of running another business. Hannah's main interest laid in the studio and the experimental possibilities of the camera. As Richard limited his photographs to the outdoors it is easy to tell the studio portraits are Hannah's. Richard took every opportunity to work outdoors; however sometimes Hannah went on his trips with him and also took photographs. Because of this overlap between the couples photographic subject matter in relation to landscapes it is difficult to ascertain who is responsible for the creation of many of these images. 1880 R. 1997réf. 61816New York:: Vantage 1997. Hardcover first edition -. Fine in fine dust jacket a new copy. First printing. James H. Carson was a Virginia native who came to California with his army regiment which landed at Monterey just after the Mexican War ended in 1847. While on furlough from his military duties in 1848 he panned the tributaries of the Stanislaus River; he struck it rich at what became known as Carson's Creek. In 1850 he acted as a guide to Lt George Derby on the first topographical survey of the Tulare San Joaquin Valley. In early 1852 the Stockton newspaper The San Joaquin Republican printed thirty-three articles written by Carson from his sickbed describing humorous anecdotes from his mining experiences. His letters were collected later that year as 'Early Recollections of the California Mines.' He died in 1853 just 32 years old. This edition - the third of his letters - is the most comprehensive; it contains all of Carson's known works including articles not previously published in book form. Introduction and notes by Doris Shaw Castro. Illustrated index. 248 pp Vantage, hardcover
1905réf. 105193Cleveland Ohio: Arthur H. Clark Company Cleveland 1905. Hardcover. A bright and crisp near fine to fine- set with minor wear to exterioe. Three volumes in maroon cloth; 329 pages: map facsimile; 25 cm; approx 300-400 pages per volumes; bibl. footnotes. A complete set of three volumes of Long's Expedition. Comprising Volumes XIV XV & XVI of Thwaites' Early Western Travels. A cornerstone of Western Americana. "Stephen Harriman Long’s expedition of 1819–1820 was one of the most ambitious government surveys of the trans-Mississippi West in the early republic. Commissioned by Secretary of War John C. Calhoun and led by Major Long of the U.S. Topographical Engineers it aimed to explore the Missouri and Platte River systems assess natural resources and evaluate routes for commerce and military posts. The scientific corps included Edwin James as botanist and geologist Thomas Say as naturalist Titian Peale as artist and William Baldwin as surgeon though Baldwin died early in the journey. Their route carried them from Pittsburgh down the Ohio and Mississippi up the Missouri and then west along the Platte into what is now Colorado where they first described Long’s Peak. From there the party turned south and east through the Plains eventually looping back through Arkansas. The expedition’s official record was prepared by Edwin James in 1823 a three-volume Account of an Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains. It offered rich detail in natural history ethnography and geology and included the first recorded ascent of a Rocky Mountain peak. At the same time it gave currency to the idea of the “Great American Desert” casting the High Plains as arid and unfit for agriculture—a judgment that influenced U.S. policy and delayed settlement. Long’s maps and James’s descriptions became important tools in shaping federal attitudes toward western lands and Native nations. The work was later reprinted in Reuben Gold Thwaites’ monumental series Early Western Travels 1748–1846 occupying volumes 14 through 16 and it remains a cornerstone of American exploration literature. Gebonden, Hardcover 160 pages, Illustrated. full colour, 26x26cm. . ISBN 9789492576361.
