réf. 22058401Tokyo 1930-34 Watanabe . Otanzaku oblong color woodprint 32.2 x 107 cm. very good faint center fold artist cinnabar red seal exceptionally clean a bright copy obscure work seldom found excellent registry & impression. RARE EXAMPLE! . . . . AN OBSCURE EVENING VIEW OF YANAGI BASHI IN TOKYO . . . A "OTANZAKU" OBLONG PRINT FORMAT . . . BY "SEKI" . This "shadow" print was done after dark at the famous Yanagi Bashi Willow Bridge in Tokyo. . This fine print shows two willow trees along the river with the bridge in the foreground. A Kimono-clad Japanese woman holds a lantern to light the way as she walks towards the bridge. . A tall bamboo fire-watchtower is outlined against the dark grey-black sky that gradually goes into a deep green as it touches the earth. . Several small houses show lighted windows their lights reflect on the river waters. . A single lonely lantern post marks the entrance where the bridge begins. . Another similar bridge is visible in the background on this moonless night. . ARTIST SEAL & TITLE: The artist's name is not found on the print. There is however a title written in two black Kanji reading "Yanagi Bashi." Printed over the title is the artist's red cinnabar Hanko/seal/chop reading "Seki." Found at the bottom center of the print. . "Seki" is an elusive artist who is not listed in a the usual standard reference resources on the period and genre of Shin Hanga examples. . WHO WAS SEKI: This artist and name are a complete mystery and there are no references to him in the record. This may very well be a spuriously used name to hide the true identity of a plagiarizer seeking to take advantage of the famous Shotei. If any reader of this listing has more information on him we would be very grateful to hear from you. An alternate reading of Seki Kanji is "Kan." . The artwork is similar to and reminiscent of Tsuchida KOITSU 1870-1949 who was master of the dusk evening and night prints. . His skill is unquestioned when it comes to drawing and painting such difficult scenes. The overall effect is stunning and skillful his use of dark colors produces a true-to-life image of dusk and evenings. Very few artists could portray such difficult scenes at this level of expertise. . The subject of this print Yanagi Bashi is quite similar in construction to another "OTANZAKU" size by Takahashi Shotei Hiroaki found in Stephens. See our example book number 220585 posted to our website under the same author's name. . In this example the bridge is reminiscent of the Yanagi Bashi or the other unnamed bridge in the background of our example. See Stephens below. . CONDITION: This unusual size print oblong print has excellent impression and registry. There is as usual a mild center fold common to "OTANZAKU" prints of this grand length of 32.2 cm. . The verso is very clean with ample "Baren" marks a fresh clean & obscure example. . Color scans are posted to our website. . REFERENCES: . réf. 821136; 19; 20; 27; 37; 31 folding leaves neatly interleaved throughout. Ten juan in five vols. plus one vol. of commentary by Dunren Zhang. 8vo modern blue wrappers new stitching. China: 1807. A rare and important edition of this notable text; the sixth volume contains the valuable commentary and notes of Dunren Zhang 1754-1834 Qing scholar mathematician historian and book collector. After the death of Emperor Wu in 87 B.C. his successor summoned to the capital scholars from throughout the empire to discuss the most important problems of the day. Emperor Wu had “implemented a series of centralized economic measures to support his territorial expansion particularly to sustain wars with Xiongnu a confederation of nomadic tribes from Central Asia. For example the state monopolized salt iron and liquor industries; operated nationwide transportation facilities; and ran retail businesses. After the emperor died the new emperor gathered his officials and more than sixty Confucian literati to reassess these measures. The consultation turned into a lengthy debate not only on economic issues but also on topics such as agriculture border defense diplomacy legality and Confucianism… “The debate was later reconstructed under the title Yan tie fan by a Confucian bureaucrat-scholar Huan Kuan who consulted both living debaters and the historical record. The text delineates the debate in sixty episodes spanning over several days. In each episode the debaters focus on a specific issue that emerges during the debate.” You “Building Empire through Argumentation” 369. As a result of the debates the monopolies on salt and iron were briefly abolished but were soon resumed only to be abolished again after the overthrow of Emperor Wang Mang in 23 A.D. “The text of this book the Yantielun has been brought in the shape of a dialogue between the opponents. Except the state monopolies the text also touches political questions of the time like the power of the nomad federation of the Xiongnu in the north or the general style of politics as a ‘rule of the law’ versus ‘rule by virtue.’ Huan Kuan’s book is an important document about the internal discussions about political affairs during the Former Han period" ChinaKnowledge.de online. Bohme a German philosophical mystic who had a profound influence on such later intellectual movements as idealism and Romanticism. Born of poor parents in Goerlitz Germany as a boy he tended cattle later becoming a shoemaker marrying & fathering 4 children. Boehme at the robust age of 37 in 1612 wrote his first treatise Aurora oder Die Morgenroete in Aufgang. In 1613 an unauthorized copy of the manuscript was copied and circulated by Karl von Ender. Its reception "raised him out of his homely sphere and made him the centre of a local circle of liberal thinkers considerably above him in station and culture." However the local pastor primarius of Gorlitz Gregorius Richter leveled a charge of heresy. The local muncipal council administered an admonishment to no further "meddle in such matters." This charge Boehme publicly followed for 5 years. In 1618 Boehme again started writing expository & polemical treatises. The majority of his works were written though not formally published from 1619 - 1624. A second major work Der Weg zu Christo was published in 1624 and signaled a renewal of clerical hostility. Boehem however was destined to suffer but a short period of this second persecution; he died of an illness on 17 November 1624. Boehme has been said to have a "fertility of ideas" and a "trasncendent greatness of religious insight." Boehme was studied by Sir Isaac Newton and influenced the work Henry More as well as and especially William Law 1686 - 1761. Xl Questions concerning the Soule was translated by the English mystic John Sparrow in collaboration with John Ellstone & financed by Humphrey Blunden. This the first of several works by Boehme that Sparrow & Ellstone were to translate into English between 1644 - 1662. Boehme proved to be highly popular in England where there were regular societies of Behmenists at the time. This work XL Questions went into a second edition in 1648 and a third edition in 1665. 11th EB. A scarce title in the Boehme canon. We find no copies currently offered via the major on-line databases OCLC records but 4 institional cc and the work has only appeared at auction 3 times in the last 25 years the last in 1989.
