Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 95 p. ;: ill. ; 26 cm. OCLC 1127758942 1553139405 Issued in slipcase ; Longus Virtually nothing is known about his actual life. Scholars generally assume he lived on the island of Lesbos because it serves as the setting for his story. Some researchers suggest the name "Longus" may not even be a personal name but rather a textual misinterpretation of the Greek word "story" or from the opening phrase of the manuscript . If the name is historical he may have been a freedman belonging to a Roman family.; The story follows two foundlings-Daphnis discovered by a goatherd and Chloe discovered by a shepherd-on the island of Lesbos. Raised by adoptive parents they grow up tending flocks slowly fall in love face various trials and romantic complications and finally marry. The novel is celebrated for its sophisticated elegant prose style apheleia vivid descriptions of nature devotion to the god Eros and the Nymphs and deep influence on later Western pastoral literature. ; Marcel Vertès was a French costume designer and illustrator of Hungarian-Jewish origins. He won two Academy Awards for his work on the 1952 film Moulin Rouge. In the late 1930s he collaborated with Elsa Schiaparelli on the design of perfume bottles.
