Three vols. 8vo orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers decorated with Genji mon emblems wrappers a bit soiled orig. block-printed vignette labels pasted on upper covers new stitching. Japan: n.d. but WorldCat suggests 1861-64. This is apparently the only known complete set of the first series of two of this superbly illustrated shunga parody of The Tale of Genji. We can trace only two sets of the complete three-volume second series at the Royal Ontario Museum and the International Resource Center for Japanese Studies. Our set contains Chapters 1-27 while the second series consists of Chapters 28-54. This is a very late shunga and one of the last before the end of the Edo period. Almost all of the techniques that make Japanese illustrated books so remarkable are utilized here. Each illustration has in the upper right- or left-hand corner a picture scroll that shows the original scene from a chapter in The Tale of Genji with a label stating which chapter it is from. Our set is finely illustrated richly colored and employs bokashi the delicate variation of shading of pigment within the image; blind-embossing even tiny noses are in relief; and the very ample use of gold and silver. The depicted garments are a mixture of extremely complex textures colors and patterns all accentuated by blind-embossing and multiple woodblock impressions. There are two kinds of black flat black and shiny burnished black and the gold has been painted over with black pigment giving a most unusual appearance. Each of the woodcut illustrations has a border with the Genji mon symbols. Koikawa 1821-1907 was a prolific artist. He illustrated as well as wrote numerous books in using various pen names. The Preface in Vol. I is written by "Insuitei" a pen name for Koikawa. Very fine set. The title-page in Vol. I has a 90 mm. tear in the lower outer corner. This is occasionally catalogued under Utagawa Kunimori II. Colin Franklin attributes the illustrations to Kunisada. ⧠See Colin Franklin Exploring Japanese Books and Scrolls p. 74-"one of Kunisada's wittily erotic interpretations of Genji's courtly love all stops pulled out for an organ-blast of color printing" & see plates 49 & 50. unknown books

Stamp to front free end-paper and titlepage otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 633-46. Entire volume: VIII 822 pp. First printing of Wang's Ph.D thesis on beta decay spectrum under the supervision of Lise Meitner. Wang was one of the initiators of research in China in nuclear physics cosmic rays and particle physics and figured among the top leaders pioneers and scientists of the Chinese nuclear deterrent program. Wang 1907 - 1998 a nuclear physicist from China went in 1930 to study at the University of Berlin in Germany. As soon as he arrived in Berlin hearing the Bothe report relating the emission of a new type of high-energy neutral radiation which was non-ionizing but even more penetrating than the hardest gamma rays derived from radium induced by the bombardment of beryllium with particles from a radioactive polonium source therefore wrongly presumed to be gamma rays Wang first suggested the use of a cloud chamber to study it. Lacking the support of his supervisor Lise Meitner the experiment was nonetheless conducted one year later by the English physicist James Chadwick thus discovering a new type of particle the neutron allowing him to win the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics. In 2000 the Chinese Physical Society established five prizes in recognition of five pioneers of modern physics in China. The Wang Ganchang Prize is awarded to physicists in particle physics and inertial confinement fusion. hardcover
1935Best.-Nr. 1517Berlin: Julius Springer 1935. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION FULL VOLUME OF THE PREISACH MODEL OF HYSTERESIS; BOUND WITH VOLKOV'S "EXACT SOLUTION TO THE DIRAC EQUATION FOR AN OTHERWISE FREE ELECTRON INTERACTING WITH AN ELECTROMAGNETIC PLANE WAVE" Guo Exact Wave Functions 39. The origin of the Preisach model can be traced to this "landmark paper" Mayergoyz Mathematical Models of Hysteresis 1. The Preisach model is a well-known hysteresis identification method in which the hysteresis is modeled by linear combination of hysteresis operators. First introduced by Ferenc Franz Preisach in this paper the widely accepted Preisach model of hysteresis "generalizes hysteresis loops as the parallel connection of independent relay hysterons" a two-valued operator used to model hysteresis Wikipedia Hysteresis is a form of non-linearity with memory an example being a magnet that may "have more than one possible magnetic moment in a given magnetic field depending on how the field changed in the past" Wikipedia. In the Preisach model specifically hysteresis is described starting from the hypothesis that a free-energy profile characterized by multiple local minima and metastable state can be decomposed into a set of many elementary bistable contribution. Each bistable unit can occupy one of two states and - and is characterized by tw0 reduced fields the local coercive field and an interaction field" Mayergoyz The Science of Hysteresis 101. "Preisach's approach was purely intuitive. It was based on a plausible hypotheses concerning the physical mechanisms of magnetization. For this reason the Preisach model was first regarded as a physical model of hysteresis" Mayergoyz. The model remains frequently in use is a wide variety of the sciences - from mathematics to engineering mechanics economics and biology. VOLKOV PAPER: First edition of Volkov's solution Volkov State of the Dirac equation - an exact solution for the system of one electron in a plane electromagnetic wave. "The state of the charged particle known as Volkov state has been used extensively to explore numerous quantum phenomena such as Compton scattering photo-ionization bremsstrahlung processes and Kapitza-Dirac problem scattering of an electron by a standing light wave etc." Yuce Free Electron in a Laser Field Feb. 1 2008.
