Three parts in one volume i.e. the Latin translation the Supplementum and the Arabic edition each with its own title page. Front pastedown has the bookplate of the Middle East scholar R.M.Burrell. His important library of books on the Middle East was sold by Sotheby's in 1999 this was lot 319. On 17th October 1630 Edward Pococke 1604-1691 arrived in Aleppo as Chaplain of the Levant Company. While there he deepened his study of the languages and culture of the region and began to collect Arabic manuscripts. In 1636 Pococke returned to England at the request of Archbishop Laud who had recently established a Chair of Arabic at Oxford and wanted Pococke to be the first holder of it. One of the manuscripts brought back by Pococke was the al-Mukhtasar fî'l-Duwal 'History of the Dynasties' of Abu'l-Faraj Bar Hebraeus 1226-1286. The lack of material in England on Islamic history and geography meant that Pococke felt unable to prepare his edition and translation and so he secured a sabbatical from Oxford and sailed for Constantinople where he spent the next three years collecting manuscripts. He returned to England shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War and it was only in 1650 that he published extracts from the "History" in his Specimen historiae Arabum which included other material culled from his now extensive collection of manuscripts. Pococke was a Royalist and the years of the Protectorate were hard: he almost lost his professorship and his priestly living. At the Restoration he returned to Oxford and began work on the complete Historia Compendiosa Dynastiarum. Finally in 1663 almost thirty years after Pococke had returned from Aleppo with the manuscript of al-Mukhtasar fî'l-Duwal his far-reaching Historia which opened up Arab history to Western was published and "remained the standard edition until the twentieth century" ODNB. Ad 1 with an engraved illustration depicting a Biblical scene mounted as a frontispiece on the verso of the second free flyleaf. 2 works in 1 volume the 2nd in 2 parts. With:2 GLEN Jean Baptise de and Aleixo de MENEZES. La messe des anciens Chrestiens dicts de S. Thomas en l' évesché d' Angamal és Indes Orientales . Brussels Rutger Velpius 1609. Ad 1: First French edition of António de Gouvea's account Jornada do Arcebispo de Goa Dom Frey Aleixo de Menezes first published in Portuguese in Coimbra 1606. It details the Jesuit-Portuguese success in aligning the St. Thomas Christians of Malabar with the Latin Church which was related to the trade struggles in the 16th and early 17th century between the Portuguese and their European and Indian rivals. The original Portuguese text was translated into French by Jean Baptiste de Glen 1552-1613 an Augustinian theologian. There are two issues of this edition with two different imprints: one published by J. Verdussen in Antwerp and one our copy published in Brussels by R. Velpius. The text was also translated into Spanish by Francois Munoz but remained in manuscript. Ad 2: Published under a separate title these two texts do in fact belong together. The Historie orientale and the two texts in La messe des anciens Chrestiens form a single book. Following the dedication to Abbot Gilles de Sprimont is the Remonstrance Catholique by Jean Baptise Glen. He expands on the Histoire Orientale and presents the edifying lessons the inhabitants of the Southern Netherlands can draw from it including interesting remarks on the Christian Syro-Malabar ritual and liturgy purified from the influence of Nestorianism a Christian heresy that held Jesus to be two distinct persons. The subsequent part is by Aleixo de Menezes on the Mass of the first Christians La messe des anciens Chrestiens on pp. 77-123 in which he deals with the content of the Mass and in which he gives the full Latin text. These two parts together published as one book are considered as a major contribution to the history of Christianity in India in general and the St. Thomas Christians on the Malabar Coast in particular. With a contemporary manuscript inscription on the recto of the second free flyleaf and a contemporary manuscript inscription on the title-page of ad 1. The binding shows some signs of wear second free flyleaf the title-page and the the first page of the dedication to ad 1 are restored in the upper outer corner the top margin is cut rather close to the text without affecting it. 16881st edition thus [2nd edition, expanded from the first] Bound in 18th Century, full leather, retaining what appear to be the 17th Century spines. In custom clamshell box. 8vo, Volume 1:[4]+[19]+160 pages; Volume 2: pages 161-315 +12+[32] pages. Beautiful engraved Illustrations of coins and medals throughout, many foldout. In French. Title translates as Metalic History of the Republic of Holland. New Edition Augmented by 140 Medals. Graesse I, 433. Lipsius / LS 47. The Bourbon historian and scholar Pierre Bizot (1630-1696) was one of the first authors to take an interest in modern numismatics. The author also proposed to reconstruct the history of the Netherlands based on the production and description of the medals. Metal production in the Netherlands from 1566 to 1680 is described with a great luxury with both numismatic and historical information. The book of Bizot had been printed for the first time in Paris in 1687 in folio format. In this second edition in smaller format, the first two volumes reproduce the text of Bizot. However the editor there has inserted several additions and had many plates engraved again, that were engraved in reverse in the first edition issued a year earlier in 1687. Includes Remarques sur Ledition De Paris De la Republique de Hollande de Mr. Bizot at the end of the 2nd volume. A supplement was published over a decade later. Paper and internal binding excellent with only light toning, no tears, Very Good Condition. (AC-21-18)

Duodecimo 6 1/2" x 4 1/4" bound early calf with labeled spines. From the Society of Writers to the Signet. European Americana 713/77 this edition not in Sabin Early French edition. Rare French edition of one of the most famous books of the period Exquemelin's account of the adventures life morals and customs of the pirates roaming the seas together with a full description of the Caribbean where they mainly operated. The French edition was just like the Dutch edition directly based on the original manuscript and was adapted by Thomas de Frontigniers. Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin called Oexmelin by the French was a chemist of French Protestant origin who spent several years with the pirates as a ship's surgeon. He took part in their daring exploits like the expeditions of the notorious English buccaneer Henry Morgan called John in the book including his raid on Maracaibo in 1669 or a year later his attack on Panama. The first edition of Exquemelin's eye witness account was published in Dutch in Amsterdam by Jan ten Hoorn in 1678 an edition so rare that it long escaped bibliographers. Exquemelin who once before in 1672 had shortly been in Amsterdam returned there in 1677 to take the 'chirurgijn' exams he sorely needed to exercise this profession at Jamaica where he had settled and in 1679 he made his last 'proof'. Meanwhile he also offered his manuscript to the publisher's Ten Hoorn who printed it in 1678. The book became immediately so polular that editions were published everywhere. The Spanish edition of 1681 probably also published in Amsterdam was long taken for the first. The first French edition was published two years before the present but both editions are equally extremely rare. In 1684 Exquemelin had sailed for France and the captain of the ship impressed with his stories saw to it that Exquemelin's manuscript was made ready for publication. The French edition altough seemingly much the same as the first Dutch edition from which most translations were made proves by closer comparison to be considerably enlarged. Several extra chapters are added mostly treating the natural history of the Spanish Americas and the romantic figure of Monbars is found here for the first time. For both the Dutch and French editions Exquemelin's manuscript had been adapted but according to De la Fontaine Verwey has kept the French edition the closest to the original. The illustrations for the French edition were newly made as well and where the Dutch edition mainly shows the portraits and atrocious acts of the pirates the plates of the French edition pay more attention to the geographical and natural historical aspects including for the fist time the plate with a buccaneer in hunting costume. Another plate shows the catching of turtles at night and the illustration in the text shows a sea-cow of which Exquemelin made a special study. The maps were also newly designed with the help of AbbBaudrand who wanted to remain anonymous; they include a map of the Isthmus of Panama drawn by Exquemelin himself. The book therefore is an important 'Americanum' as well. Of special interest are the two "Appendices" with an account of the possessions revenues and offices of the Spaniards in America including a complete list of all ecclesiastical functionaries in Spanish America together with their salaries. No book in any language was ever the parent of so many imitations and the source of so many legends and it still is popular today. The Society of Writers to Her Majestys Signet is the oldest legal society in the world. It is a private society of Scottish solicitors. The Society dates back to 1594 and is part of the College of Justice. Published anonymously the work has been attributed to Jean-Antoine Du Cerceau 1670-1730 and Abbé André de Claustre dates unknown. The biography is arranged chronologically with the years indicated in the margins. Illustrated with a large portrait and a folding map of Persia and the Mughal territories the work also contains a wealth of information on the geography and history of the Persian Empire.Nader Shah was a member of the Afshar tribe. He entered the service of Tahmasp the son of Shah Sultan Husayn. Nadir took the name Tahmasp Kuli Khan Tahmasp's slave. He warred against the Turks successfully and when the shah turned victory to disaster by a conciliatory peace Nadir in 1732 deposed him. Tahmasp's infant son Abbas III was placed on the throne with Nadir as regent. In 1736 Nadir deposed Abbas and he himself became shah thus ending the rule of the Safavid dynasty. In 1747 during a campaign against rebellious Kurds Nadir Shah was assassinated by officers of his own guard. Although the dynasty he founded the Afshar dynasty 1736-49 was short-lived Nadir is generally regarded as one of the greatest of all rulers of Persia. 1786rif. NS0165Paris Chez. M.DCC. LXXXVI 1786. This is a continuation of the history of "Revolutions in England" by the Jesuit Pierre D'Orleans first published 1695. This Histoire is the story of the Stuarts as rulers and pretenders considered as the legitimate Catholic rulers of England unfairly usurped. Turpin continues the story from the expulsion of James II through efforts to recover the throne.
