ref. 39764Circa 1885. Albumen print photograph 160 x 210 mm of two pages of music notation the original was most likely handwritten and then lithographically printed before it was photographed; generic title legible as Airs tahitiens at the head of the left-hand page with the title of the individual tune Arue! Arue! = Praise! Praise! at the head of the right-hand-page; the print was laid down on a sheet of folding card 175 x 220 mm by its original owner Papeete resident Mary Young see below to create a unique ""homemade"" piece of sheet music; the albumen print has a few small small surface scratches but is otherwise in good condition; the card mount is toned and lightly foxed. This unusual photograph of a transcription of traditional Tahitian music was probably taken in Papeete by either Charles Georges Spitz or Mrs Sophia Hoare the only two professional photographers working in Tahiti in this period. Provenance: Mary Young Stringer 1854 Tahiti - 1918 Auckland wife of merchant James Lyle Young 1849-1929; by descent through the Australian branch of the Young family. Mary journeyed by herself from Australia where she had been visiting relatives to San Francisco via Hawaii at the end of 1888. She gave birth to their son Walter Lyle in San Francisco on 2 June 1889 before returning with her newborn to Tahiti in August. Later in life Mary settled in Homebush Sydney. James Lyle Young 1849-1929 was a Pacific Islands trader based in Tahiti. He was the cousin of Irish politician diplomat and historian James 1st Viscount Bryce 1838-1922. Young was a founding member of the Polynesian Society. He collected many important Micronesian and Polynesian artefacts which were either donated to the Auckland Museum New Zealand or sold to the Bishop Museum Hawaii. It starts with the Theatrum sympateticum divided into two parts by the English diplomat and philosopher Kenelm Digby 1603-1665. The first contains notes on medicinal herbs and plants curing everyday ailments the second explains how to make the "powder of sympathy" "a potion which allowed the healing of the wound by treating the weapon which caused it" MacDonald and includes extracts from works by Papinius and Sylvester Rattrat. The powder of sympathy could also be put on a bandage that had been in contact with the wound without ever touching the wound. Digbys work is followed by 't Groote licht der natuurkunde by Athanasius Kircher 1602-1680 a work on magnetic forces and the influence of the moon sun and planets on the earth. Rare work on drug trafficking in Egypt in the 1930s and an important example of the authors "war on drugs": he was director of the Central Narcotics Intelligence Bureau. Thomas Wentworth Russell 1879-1954 sometimes better known as Russell Pasha was a police officer in service of Egypt who was appalled by the increasing drug trafficking in Egypt and the large number of drug addicts in the country. He founded the Central Narcotics Intelligence Bureau CNIB making it his mission to rid Egypt of drugs especially what he called "white drugs" cocaine morphine heroin but also of "black drugs" hashish opium. Russell was one of the most important anti-drug campaigners in Egypt in his time and after greatly raising awareness of the rising problem. Here he describes how drugs are smuggled in large quantities from abroad to Egypt. In many chapters he extensively describes the foreign sources of supply discussing not only important drug barons but also mentioning specific ships and other means of transport used to smuggle drugs notes cases where weapons were used by traffickers discusses people involved in the trade traffickers and their methods of smuggling in shoes camel saddles etc. addiction and its social effects and death rates and much more. Although 3000 copies were printed the printers code for the job is printed on the back of the title-page: 10506-1932-3000 ex. it is a scarce and outstanding example of Russell's anti-drug campaign extensively describing drug trafficking in Egypt in the 1930s being well-illustrated with photographs of drug barons users traffickers and methods of concealment. Extremely rare botanical print series showing both European and exotic fruits and flowers engraved by Jean-Baptiste Huet the younger 1772-1852 after designs of Benoît-Louis Prévost 1735-1804 or Jean-Louis Prévost 1760-1810. It also includes four plates showing bouquets from Europe America Asia and Africa. Only one complete copy is known at the Bibliothèque nationale de France we have traced no copy in sale or auction records and it is not mentioned in the usual botanical bibliographical works. The BnF copy is described in the Inventaire du fonds français après 1800 where the series consists of 23 prints issued all together under this title. The BnF and the IFF date the work ca. 1837-1839 but it is more likely that it is ca. 1837-1838 as Dauty died in 1838 and he printed at Rue de Bibliothèque no. 16 only in 1827 and 1835-1838. The BnF ascribes the designs for the prints to Benoît-Louis Prévost but Jean-Louis Prévost remains a possibility for he produced another famous print series of flowers and fruits in the same style of stipple engravings Collection des fleurs et fruits 1805.With a contemporary inscription "A M.elle Vincent" on the first free endleaf dedicating it to or belonging to the famous French 19th-century botanical painter Henriette Vincent 1786-1834 who was a student of Gerard van Spaendonck and Pierre-Joseph Redouté. It is an account of Ansons expedition to the western coast of South America to harass the Spanish trading territories and cutting off the Spanish supplies of wealth in this way after the outbreak of the War of Jenkinss Ear between Britain and Spain in 1739. Anson was the commander of 7 ships in 1740 including the Centurion but soon his expedition threatened to turn into a fiasco. His squadron was battered by storms and bad weather causing damage and shipwrecks and many of his crew died from scurvy typhus and dysentery. The remaining crew was transferred to the Centurion the last remaining vessel and Anson limped across the Pacific to Macao. In June 1743 he sailed to the Philippines were he achieved a substantial victory near Manila by capturing the Nuestra Senora de Covadonga a Spanish galleon filled with gold. After sailing around the world Anson returned to England in June 1744 and in spite of his enormous losses he returned with large profits.Ansons voyage being one of the greatest voyages in the history of exploration and naval warfare laid the foundation for British voyages and exploration of the Pacific and more specific for English trade in this area. The present account being based upon Ansons own ship journal describing this troubled expedition soon became highly popular in the 18th century and is even considered as the masterpiece of descriptive travel and the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century Hill. The identity of the Dutch translator of the present work is unknown. It gives an interesting "picturesque" travel account of the United States spanning the year 1813 and provides five main accounts covering different subjects: a statistical survey; a religious overview with descriptions of the several Christian communities naming Methodists Quakers Shakers Baptists and more; a description of the different types of steamboats used in North America; a biography of the French general Jean Victor Moreau who lived in exile in the United States from 1805 to 1812; and a description of the dancing rituals of indigenous American "Indians" naming the Osage Arkansas Sioux and Saki tribes which the Russian author interestingly compares with tribes in the Caucasus. With the bookplate of the society Doctrina & Amicitia on the front paste-down. 1769ref. 85296Boston Massachusetts: Edes and Gill 1769. First American. Pamphlet. Good Plus. LACKS TITLE PAGE Octavo 8" x 5." This edition published in Boston by Edes and Gill Printers to the Honourable House of Representatives is a reprint of the London edition issued earlier in 1769 in London by George Kearsly. The first leaf shows ragged-edges spotting and toning; remainder shows light toning throughout. Several names scribbled ink-blotted out pen trials to page 3 and verso of p. 55. A detailed treatise outlining the defense of colonial rights and privileges based on constitutional principles original charters and the consequences of coercive parliamentary measures and cruel legislative and fiscal enforcement. This letter is sometimes misattributed to Samuel Adams but said misattribution perhaps issuing primarily from Joseph Sabin is considered by some historians to be insufficiently evidence-based. For one thing the first printing of this pamphlet was in London while at the time Samuel Adams was in Boston stirring the proverbial revolutionary pot. Hutchinson History of Massachusetts believes this "anonymous" author was James Bowdoin. An informative and important foundational document outlining point-by-point the unsound reasoning and lack of fairness in British policies regarding the colonies. Quite scarce on the market. Evans 11310; Sabin 31912. NOTE: LACKS TITLE PAGE. An important letter addressed to Wills Hill the1st Earl of Hillsborough then Secretary of State for the American colonies. Hill was "viewed by colonists and their sympathizers as a chief proponent of strict parliamentary taxation and military coercion" and a leading champion of economic oppressions levied upon the American colonists by Great Britain. Famously in order to extract itself from debts incurred from the Seven Years War the British Parliament imposed a direct tax upon American colonists; said "Stamp Act" set to begin in the fall of 1765 stated that all legal documents and printed materials must bear a tax stamp provided by commissioned distributors who would collect the tax in exchange for the stamp. This law applied not only to official documents such as wills and deeds but extended to newspapers pamphlets and even playing cards and dice." Further a provision of the act stated that violators would not be eligible for a trial by jury. After vocal and at times violent colonial resistance to the Act it was repealed in 1766. However the Stamp Act was supplanted by The Declaratory Act which essentially reaffirmed presumptions that the British Parliament wielded the power to pass any laws regarding the colonists which they so desired. The issues evinced by these acts simmered for ten years and had much to do with the events comprising the American Revolution. in part from History Dot Com 11/09/09. Edes and Gill unknown

Poems celebrating the truce with Spain though attributed to a former opponent of the truce with the Dutch poems in textura types and Latin marginal notes in roman. A political pamphlet in verse celebrating peace and dated less than a month before the signing of the Twelve Years' Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic. The main poem takes the form of a "codicil" to War's "last will and testament." It recites the various legacies both good and bad that the War has left to people on both sides and even to people and countries not directly involved in the fighting. Asher mistakenly lists the present pamphlet as no. 11 in the Bye-Korf series: it was published about six months after the Bye-Korf was banned but later collectors often inserted it and the associated Testament in place of the earlier Testament which should have been Asher 26-28/10. The author place of publication and publisher given on the title-page are all word plays "Yemand van Waer-Mond" for example suggesting "someone of honest mouth." The STCN attributes the pamphlet with a query to Nierop who propagandized against peace in one of the Bye-Korf pamphlets Asher 28/37 but rejoiced in it once it came. Alden & Landis attributes the associated Testament ofte Wtersten Wille to Middelgeest. The poet's four-line verse on the back of the title-page is signed with the motto: "Yet Meer en mocht/Min en docht Niet."A nice view of popular feelings about the Truce just before it formally took effect. With some tears at the fold of the outermost bifolium and only slightly browned otherwise a very good copy.l Asher 26-28/11; Knuttel 1584; Simoni W 34; Tiele 751; OCLC WorldCat 3 copies. They include a large image nearly filling the quarto leaf of a man on a ladder picking fruit from a tree and a whaling scene with a man harpooning a spouting whale. The heart-shaped label with the name J. Visscher and date 28 January 1777 suggests that the album was assembled for Visschers betrothal or marriage on that date. This is supported by the final cut-out nearly filling the paste-down at the end which shows a well-dressed man sitting on a barrel left perhaps a merchant and a standing woman right with a grape vine full of ripe grapes growing up between them. He holds the vine with his left hand and she with her right. Two signed autograph letters in dark brown ink on paper 1 laid watermarked B Dumas; 1 wove with no watermark. 2 2 blank; 2 2 blank pp. Two letters by Jacques René Pleuc or possibly Pleve officer of the infamous French 18-gun privateer Le Grand Décidé which had been operating out of Bordeaux since 1799 under its captain Duchesne Lasalle for its owner Pierre Leleu. With the capture of the English frigate Liverpool off the coast of Brittany near Brest in 1799 Jacques René was made Capitaine de Prise giving him responsibility for the captured ship. In the first letter he writes to Auguste-Anne Bergevin 1753-1831 the relevant authority at Bordeaux complaining that Leleu has still not paid the promised share of the proceeds from the sale of the booty which was carried out by the brothers Amédée and Joseph Eugène Larrieu in Bordeaux. The second letter is addressed to the Larrieu brothers still trying to secure payment referring to the earlier letter and naming the ship and the amount of money 5000 francs not noted in the first letter. The first letter somewhat tattered at the head with the loss of parts of 3 or 4 words and both were formerly folded for sending. Both are in good condition. A fascinating primary source providing a window into the logistics and finance of a privateering venture. unknown
