1500ref. 007113Spain 1500. No Binding. Very Good. A well-preserved vellum leaf from a late medieval Iberian Gradual of Antiphonal written in a clear Gothic textura hand with square neumes on four-line red staves. The text is taken from the Passion narrative of Christ in Gethsemane including the phrases "Vigilate et orate ut non intretis in tentationem" and "Pater mi: si possibile est transeat a me calix iste" identifying it as part of the Holy Week liturgy very likely Maundy Thursday or the Tenebrae offices. Recto and verso each contain six lines of text and music. The script shows the characteristic angularity and compressed minims associated with late 15th-century Castillian or Aragonese monastic production. The musical notation is composed of uniform square notes in dark brown ink the staves ruled in red. Margins generous indicating the leaf was not trimmed. Vellum is clean and supple Some minor wrinkling and cockling small patch of adhesive residue at corners and faint offsetting but overall with strong dark text and notation and excellent survival of ruling and musical lines. No losses. Ships unmatted and unframed unknown

This beautiful new book from literary critic Stanley Corngold tells the little known story of Mann's early years in America and his encounters with a group of highly gifted emigres in Princeton which came to be called the Kahler Circle with Mann at its center. The Circle included immensely creative mostly German-speaking exiles from Nazism foremost Mann Erich Kahler Hermann Broch and Albert Einstein all of whom during the Circle's nascent years in Princeton were "stupendously" productive. In clear engaging prose Corngold explores the traces the Circle left behind during Mann's stay in Princeton treating literary works and political statements anecdotes contemporary history and the Circle's afterlife. Weimar in Princeton portrays a fascinating scene of cultural production at a critical juncture in the 20th century and the experiences of an extraordinary group of writers and thinkers who gathered together to mourn a lost culture and to reckon with the new world in which they had arrived. paperback

ref. B9781501351730Paperback / softback. New. Metafiction has long been associated with the heyday of literary postmodernism—with a certain sense of irresponsibility political apathy or outright nihilism. Yet if as is now widely assumed postmodernism has finally run its course how might we account for the proliferation of metafictional devices in contemporary narrative media Does this persistence undermine the claim that postmodernism has passed or has the function of metafiction somehow changed To answer these questions Josh Toth considers a broad range of recent metafictional texts—bywriters such as George Saunders and Jennifer Egan and directors such as Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino. At the same time he traverses a diffuse theoretical landscape: from the rise of various new materialisms in philosophy and the turn to affect in literary criticism to the seemingly endless efforts to name postmodernism’s ostensible successor. Ultimately Toth argues that much contemporary metafiction moves beyond postmodern skepticism to reassert the possibility of making true claims about real things. Capable of combating a “post-truth” crisis such forms assert or assume a kind of Hegelian plasticity; they actively and persistently confront the trauma of what is infinitely mutable or perpetually other. What is outside or before a given representation is confirmed and endured as that which exceeds the instance of its capture. The truth is thereby renewed; neither denied nor simply assumed it is approached as ethically as possible. Its plasticity is grasped because the grasp the form of its narrative apprehension lets slip. paperback

ref. B9781501368394Paperback / softback. New. What happens when fashionable forms of unserious speech prove to be contagious when they adulterate and weaken communicative spheres that rely on honesty trust and sincerity Demonstrating how the tension between irony and avowal constitutes a central conflict in Fontane’s works this book argues that his best-known society novels play out a struggle between the incompatible demands of these two modes of speaking. Read in this light the novels identify an irreconcilable discrepancy between word and deed as both the root of emotional discord and the proximate cause of historical and political upheaval. Given the alarm since 2016 over unreliability falsehood and indifference to truth it is now easier to perceive in Fontane’s novels a profound concern about language that is not sincere and not meant to be taken literally. For Fontane irony exemplifies a discrepancy between language and meaning a loosening of the ethical bond between words and the things to which they refer. His novels investigate the extent to which human relationships can continue to function in the face of pervasive irony and the erosion of language’s credibility. Although Fontane is widely regarded as an ironic writer Tucker’s analyses reveal a critical distance between his works and the prospect of irony as a dominant idiom. Revisiting Fontane’s novels in a post-truth age brings the conflict between irony and avowal into sharper relief and makes legible the stakes and contours of our own post-truth condition. paperback
