After voyaging on a condemned brigantine with a drunken captain they purportedly attempted the Malaspina Glacier trek to the gold fields traversing from Yakutat Bay across the Wrangell-St. Elias range and dropping into the headwaters of the Tanana and Yukon Rivers. ref. B9781501385520Paperback / softback. New. Realism seems to be everywhere both as a trending critical term and as a revitalized aesthetic practice. This volume brings together for the first time three aspects that are pertinent for a proper understanding of realism: its 19th-century aesthetics committed to making reality into an object of serious art; the experiments with and against realism by 20th-century modernist postmodernist or magical realist writing; and the politics of realism especially its ambitions to map the complex realities produced by global capitalism and climate catastrophe. This juxtaposition of aesthetics experiments and politics unsettles the entrenched opposition between realism and experimental literature that tends to ignore the fact that realism by virtue of its commitment to a changing material and social world cannot be but continuously experimenting. The innovative chapters of this book address some of the pressing questions of literary and cultural studies today like the complex relation between historical materialism and new materialisms between science and art or the different aesthetic and political affordances of making systemic analyses against depicting the specificity of the local. Some of the chapters deal with classically realist authors such as George Eliot Émile Zola and Joseph Conrad to gauge the aesthetic radicalism of their diverse realist projects. Others investigate the experimental engagements with realism by authors such as B.S. Johnson J.M. Coetzee or Rachel Cusk. Yet others analyze the politics of realism found in contemporary anglophone novels by writers like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie David Mitchell or Rohinton Mistry. The readings assembled here are a testament to the diversity of literary realisms from the 19th 20th and 21st centuries and to the ongoing controversies surrounding definitions and deployments of “realism.” paperback

Over the last few decades and from across a spectrum of centrist political thought a variety of academic disciplines and numerous public intellectuals the claim has been that we need to empathize more with marginalized people as a way to alleviate social inequalities. If we all had more skill with empathy so the claim goes we would all be better citizens. But what does it mean to empathize with others How do we develop this skill And what does it offer that older models of solidarity don’t Why empathy—and why now Rereading Empathy takes up these questions examining the uses to which calls for empathy are put in the face of ever expanding economic and social precarity. The contributors draw on a variety of historical and contemporary literary and cultural archives to illustrate the work that empathy is supposed to enable—and to query alternative models of building collective futures. paperback

New Directions in Print Culture Studies features new methods and approaches to cultural and literary history that draw on periodicals print culture and material culture thus revising and rewriting what we think we know about the aesthetic cultural and social history of transnational America. The unifying questions posed and answered in this book are methodological: How can we make material archival objects meaningful How can we engage and contest dominant conceptions of aesthetic historical and literary periods How can we present archival material in ways that make it accessible to other scholars and students What theoretical commitments does a focus on material objects entail New Directions in Print Culture Studies brings together leading scholars to address the methodological historical and theoretical commitments that emerge from studying how periodicals books images and ideas circulated from the 19th century to the present. Reaching beyond national boundaries the essays in this book focus on the different materials and archives we can use to rewrite literary history in ways that highlight not a canon of “major” literary works but instead the networks dialogues and tensions that define print cultures in various moments and movements. paperback
ref. B9781501363078Hardback. New. As market reforms and migration transformed Albania in the early 1990s Ardit Gjebrea began mixing traditional folk music with world music and Italian pop. The resulting album Projekt Jon 1997 provided a new model for song—Western and cosmopolitan yet firmly rooted in the fertile soil of the nation—against a backdrop of deepening political uncertainty about the very future of Albania. The Ionian Project announced itself with the frenetic beating of the daullë and the traditional cries of Albania’s highland shepherd. This sprawling collaboration between singer-songwriter Ardit Gjebrea folk singer Hysni Zela producer Paul Mazzolini and a team of crack studio musicians in Italy had an outsized ambition: to transcend the small postsocialist nation-state’s borders imaginatively crafting through sound a new home in Europe for its citizens. But as Gjebrea prepared to launch Projekt Jon violence prompted by the collapse of widespread pyramid schemes threatened to tear Albania apart. And for the intellectuals concerned about growing cracks in the symbolic foundations of the Albanian nation-state the album came to serve as a referendum on the nature of postsocialist citizenship. hardcover

First edition of this exceedingly scarce promotional offprint for the placer gold mining concentrator for “float or flour gold” developed by A.D. Clarke in the early 1880’s at an Idaho gold mining operation. The invention required parallel bars of iron an 1/8th of an inch apart bolted in place allowing water to flow through a sluice from a hydraulic mining operation with good gentle water flow and then would be directed through a series of tanks fitted with sage brush to collect the particles of gold and then across a series of riffles to pick up still finer gold particles. There was a mini gold rush in Clatsop OR in late-1884-1885 after J.M. Weed filed a placer claim for his mine Gertrude on Rock Creek in May 1885 which claimed loose valuable material in gravel on Rock Creek followed by a plethora of gold miners staking claims in the area and by 1889 the Rock Creek Mining District was formed.
