A panoramic view of Mount Bullion the historic Mariposa County gold-mining settlement formerly known as Princeton showing its commercial center with wooden buildings townspeople numerous horses and horse-drawn vehicles. prominent sign identifies the “Princeton Boarding House” preserving the older name closely associated with the settlement and its principal mine. The photograph occupies an interesting place in the limited early photographic record of Mount Bullion. Other documented images include a ca. 1900 view of the Princeton Mine a 1914 view of the Princeton Quartz Mine in the California State Library and a 1926 photograph of the historic Marre Store preserved in the Library of Congress as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey. Unlike these images which concentrate on individual mines or buildings the present panorama records Mount Bullion as a functioning community providing a broad view of the settlement during its early twentieth-century revival. 1949ref. 240621949. Alaska Photograph album documenting a young man's travels principally in Alaska circa 1949-1950 with substantial coverage of gold mining in the Fairbanks region. The mining sequence records the industrial methods that sustained extraction beyond the early gold rushes when large dredges and powerful hydraulic jets worked extensive gravel deposits and removed overburden. Photo album containing 62 silver gelatin photographs approximately 3½ x 3½ inches mounted with corners on black paper leaves. Album measures 12½ x 8⅞ inches bound in embossed black covers with cord ties and gilt "Photographs" lettering. Detailed views show a floating gold dredge's articulated bucket chain cutting into a gravel bank its substantial framework and the tailings surrounding its working pond. Another sequence follows large water pipes across brush-covered ground to a hydraulic nozzle discharging a forceful stream over stripped terrain. Men pose beside timber water-control structures and balance on pipelines; other photographs show muddy access roads and utilitarian camp buildings. A particularly strong view records three men outside "Max Rede's General Merchandise / Fox. Alaska." Additional scenes include travelers wearing insect netting glacier landscapes and a railway station marked "Seward." Coastal photographs depict a docked steamship fishing boats beside waterfront warehouses and children standing on a wooden boardwalk. Earlier pages show Greyhound bus travel and playful portraits outside the Idaho State Capitol in Boise. The close machinery studies and views of disturbed ground document both the engineering and environmental consequences of placer mining alongside the settlements and transport routes encountered during the journey. Front cover mostly loose with rubbing to the binding and edge wear to album leaves. Photographs generally well preserved. Overall in very good condition. unknown

ref. MD42Quarto bifolium ca. 245x205 cm or 9 ½ x 7 ¾ in. 4 pp. Brown ink on bluish wove paper; maker’s blind-stamped monogram in the left upper corner of the first leaf. Foldmarks and a couple of mild creases paper slightly age-toned but overall a very good letter written in a legible hand. An interesting early original letter with a contemporary account of Captain William Waldo’s efforts to deliver supplies in 1850 to starving gold prospectors in the Sierra Nevada Mountains who arrived there during the California Gold Rush 1848-1855. “William Waldo 1812-1881 was a candidate for Governor of California in 1853. He was born in Harrison County Virginia now part of West Virginia but spent most of his life in Missouri where he was a merchant and steamboat captain. In 1849 he joined the gold rush to California at the head of a wagon train. In California the next year reports arrived of impending starvation among numerous immigrants on the Nevada side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Waldo put great effort into recruiting and delivering supplies for them and became well known for his relief attempts. In 1853 the Whig party nominated Waldo as their candidate for Governor but he narrowly lost to the incumbent John Bigler. Following his defeat he returned east first to Minnesota and then back to Missouri where his wife and children had remained. In his later years he moved to Texas where he died” Wikipedia. “About 1852 an act was passed by the California Legislature partly reimbursing Mr. Waldo for his relief and efforts were made in other states to have the legislatures repay him for aid to their citizens or to urge Congress to do so but these appeals were in vain” St. Clair County Personalities: William Waldo// St. Clair County Courier Osceola Missouri 27 June 1940 p. 2. The letter starts with the discussion of the compiler’s family issues and proceeds to local news including “a continuous railroad from this region to the East in a few years” the expenses of Captain William Waldo and his property stolen by “the emigrants” actions of other Waldo family members and the author’s initiative to raise awareness of William Waldo’s relief efforts in the Legislatures of Virginia Missouri Illinois and Kentucky as well as in the U.S. Congress. Excerpts from the letter: “Dear Father Thomas arrived here in good health three days since and your letter came to hand this morning. I think he intends to remain here with me but it is hard to tell what course he would pursue. You may rest assured I shall make every effect an send him to school. It would have been much better had he arrived a few months either sooner or later as I then could have given him a fair trial but I shall have to be absent from home most of the time for the next two months and he may have leave some time during my absence. I have not yet drawn from Thomas his views but shall in a day or two make some propositions to him for his future conduct. Jedidiah is well and making fine progress in his studies but seems somewhat restless and I must fear will be inclined to go to California or Santa Fe should he quit school this summer. I think he had better be kept at school until he graduates which will take one or two years longer by that time he might become more stable and firm in his views for it seems to be a crisis in all our family when passing from boyhood to complete manhood. I have had much conversation with him and write him frequently and think if he can be kept from committing some act of folly in the next two or three years that he may make a man of no little importance and if kept at school he would go forth to commence lide a complete scholar which I think of vast importance and not to be estimated in many. <…> I find he is very irratable sic! which it greatly increased by <…> of spirits occasionally <…> and my impression is that it would be better for him not to return home this summer <…> My love to Mother and she can rest assured that I will leave nothing under to take care of Thomas. There will be a continuous Railroad from this region to the East in a few years and then we shall look for you & mother if you do not come sooner. The kins are all well in this country. William Marten in Santa Fe at last accounts. Letters from W. Waldo in California to 8 January in good health and spirits but pretty well through in a many way. Spent sum 25 or 30 thousand dollars releasing the emigrants three months time had a large amount say 10 or 15 thousand dollars of property stolen during his absence and in any way got through about $50000 in assisting the emigrants. I have no ideas when he will return. His family are yet in Illinois but will return. Janus Marten is in bad health in California but quite rich. Joseph Waldo & Samuel Waldo in Oregon all well last accounts. Calvin and family are all well he has recorded his grand health but is lame. <…> I have had no letter from Mortimer this month. I sent him some papers giving accounts of W. Waldo’s opperations sic! in California & hoped he would have resolutions in his favor passed through the Legislation of Va. Missouri Illinois & Kentucky have all passed memorials to Congress in his behalf <…>” unknown

ref. OA224 140 p. 227x145 cm. No wrapper or binding. Few pages are detached otherwise in good condition. Two handwritten inscriptions in Arabic on the last page in contemporary hands indicating that the book was printed in Bulaq. First edition of the famous The Seyahatname Ottoman Turkish : سياØت نامه by Evliyâ Çelebi one of the most influential travelogues of the 17th century Ottoman Empire. The edition included first volume which describes Istanbul. Evliya Çelebi stands among the relatively few seventeenth-century Ottoman prose writers who recorded the places he visited in an unmistakably personal and highly literary voice. His monumental ten-volume Seyahatname Book of Travels preserves exceptionally rich information on the diverse lands through which he journeyed and consequently occupies a central position in the history of Turkish cultural life and the broader tradition of travel writing. The Seyahatname constitutes a unique source for the historical geography of the Ottoman world in the seventeenth century as well as for the Turkish language and its regional varieties as they were spoken in that period. Evliya’s descriptions encompass the general conditions of the localities he visited their geographical situation and historical development and the social characteristics of their inhabitants including language religion dress artistic production and everyday customs. In addition the work provides valuable material for comparative geography art history and ethnography. Of particular significance is its detailed documentation of Muslim–non-Muslim relations within Ottoman society. Evliya offers extensive observations on the daily lives of non-Muslim communities including their demographic presence economic and cultural circumstances places of worship religious practices and communal traditions. His account further preserves a wide corpus of vernacular cultural expression—stories folk songs folk poetry legends fairy tales and rhymed couplets—together with notes on dialectal variation folk dances clothing styles wedding customs entertainment practices and patterns of neighborhood interaction and social conduct. Equally noteworthy is the breadth of architectural and topographical information found throughout the travelogue. Evliya records the distinguishing features of structures such as houses mosques prayer halls fountains inns palaces mansions baths churches monasteries towers castles fortifications roads and synagogues often including remarks on their construction later repairs patrons builders and restorers. He also supplies data on regional culinary culture local administration prominent families and notable individuals—including poets performers and officials of various ranks—while occasionally offering insight into the tools and material equipment characteristic of seventeenth-century Ottoman life. Omniarecens diligenter recognita & emendata John Ravisius or Johannes Ravisius Textor or Jean Tixier de Revisi the writer of Nivernen Nivernais: dialogues somewhat festive studious and very useful: also epigrams not very plain as very eloquent and very delightful. All recently diligently revised and amended. Londini London: Ex officina H. Bynnemani Typographi Anno Domini. 1581. Hardback greyish-brown leather binding probably 18th or more likely 19th century with maroon title label gilt-blocked title and raised bands to spine. Blind-stamped design to boards and spine. Octavo/8vo collation but small measures around 3 1/8" x 4 7/8" x 1 1/4" circa 400-500 pages see below for explanation of unusual pagination and collation Scuffing and wear to binding some discolouration but reasonably clean. Bumping and a little tearing to corners and to head of spine with some loss. Otherwise binding firm. A little cracking to title label but intact with some discolouration. Deckled page edges which are very browned scuffed and otherwise marked. small bookseller label to front pastedown. Some marking a little staining and foxing around pastedowns and endpapers. Toning staining a little light foxing and other marking throughout. Some creasing dog-eared corners and the odd tear with loss to a few leaves including to title leaf which is missing a few characters of text at bottom left-hand corner and is quite fragile and only attached at top. Heavy ink staining to several leaves towards end of book. Occasional underlining marginalia and a little text scored out in several latter pages. Very unusual and defective page numbering. Firstly the numbering is of each leaf not each page and the print is a little unclear for some figures. It appears to run after the initial three blank endpapers and preliminary pages that could presumably be numbered i - vi being the tile page to end of 'epistole' from leaf 1 - 20 13 or 18 25 23 - 25 iB 27 blank 20 - 35 6 64 - 72 74 74 repeating 76 76 repeating - 92. However the leaves do not appear to be pages out of order nor duplications and the pages do all seem to be in correct sequence so it appears to be a printing fault rather than a binding one. The order of the page collation is more accurate sequentially though even then there are a few oddities running after the first three blank endpapers on the basis of numbers denoted on leaves as i-v then vi-viii blank from A i - F viii then G ii G G iv G iii blank G v - T viii no use of U V no use of W X - Z viii Aa i - Ff ii Gg ii-Gg iii Ff iv Gg ii Gg iv Gg iii Gg v - Ii v with blank leaves Ii vi-vii removed and three blank endpapers. See pictures for further information. About the author: John Ravisius or Johannes Ravisius Textor or Jean Tixier de Revisi c. 1470–1542 was a French Renaissance humanist scholar and professor of rhetoric. He was born in Ravisi which is near the commune of Saint-Saulge in the central province of Nivernais. His works which are mostly on the topic of education were widely accepted and employed by French academia. Tixier eventually adopted the Latinised name Johannes Textor Ravisius Nivernensis. Per the epitaph on his headstone Tixier was born in 1470 and died on 3 December 1542. According to Victor Gueneau other scholars pretend that he died on 13 December 1524 and that his brother Jacques completed Jean's book l'Origine de l'imprimerie "The Origin of Printing". Similarly some authors report his year of birth to be approximately 1480. Tixier studied humanities at the College of Navarre. When he graduated he accepted a position in the college's rhetoric department; there he impressed faculty and students alike. In 1520 he accepted a position as rector of the University of Paris. He held the position until 1525 succeeded by William Manderstown. More than thirty editions of his principal work Officina were published as he continued to expand it. Source: Wiki H.
