1846ref. 89811Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard 1846. First American Edition From the Ninth London Edition. Octavo. 24cm. Publisher's red embossed cloth titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. xvi; 1; 18-459pp.;16 ads to rear. Some rubbing and scuffing to corners and some cracking and fraying at the spine ends solid and durable; internally clean and fresh although the paper seems to have succumbed to a light uniform toning; old ownership scruffily removed from pastedown illustrated throughout. A very good strong copy. A rather beautifully written and highly regarded mix of anecdote technical advice and sage old military chap's experiences of ll forms of hunting and shooting; proper maintenance of guns civilized habits of interaction with the people whose land you might be rampaging across heavily armed and in search of sport methods of hunting waterfowl at sea apparently the conventional wisdom suggests a sailing vessel with a mounted gun; which leads me to believe I have fortunately never been hungry enough to pursue dinner with a navy training of dogs and a lot of very specific information on individual game; a Snipe it seems cannot be hunted in the same manner as a Partridge and a Canvas Back Duck is a different beast indeed. Lea & Blanchard unknown
