Contemporary prefatory material in the first tome records that Francesco had died before publication of the work was completed and that his manuscripts were subsequently entrusted for preparation and publication. Tomes IVI retain Francesco's authorship while Tomes VIIVIII are explicitly issued under Claudio dalla Pieve apparently representing the continuation or completion of Francesco's theological programme.A particularly remarkable feature is the extensive programme of engraved allegorical plates and diagrammatic theological tables. These were not merely decorative additions: Francesco's own prefatory material specifically describes graphic tables placed at the beginnings of the individual treatises as an intentional means of elucidating the structure of the work. They form a sophisticated eighteenth-century system of visual theology mapping such subjects as the virtues sin natural and ecclesiastical law the Commandments justice property restitution the Sacraments and ecclesiastical discipline.Among the more unusual subjects treated graphically are the acquisition and division of property under civil canon and private law; clerical ownership and benefices; ecclesiastical jurisdiction; confession and penance; and solicitation to sexual misconduct in connection with confession. The resulting combination of theology canon law moral casuistry and visual information design gives the work interest considerably beyond the conventional market for eighteenth-century theological texts.PROVENANCEContemporary manuscript ex-libris of the Convent of San Giovanni Battista Saluzzo: Ex Libris Conventus S. An interesting work on the oil fields of Pennsylvania Ohio and West Virginia with stories of early oils wells and their owners and how oil companies operate. The first oil well in the United States was drilled by E. L. Drake in Oil Creek Pennsylvania near Titusville in 1859 and America's first oil rush ensued peaking in the late 1860s. The Titusville population exploded from 250 residents in 1860 to over 10000 in little more than five years. Output of crude went from 2000 barrels in 1859 to 4000000 barrels in 1869. The present work is one of the earliest separate publications on the American oil industry still in its infancy. "This is a good history of the oil development thus far in Pennsylvania with much shorter accounts of the West Virginia Southern Ohio and Kentucky regions with a day-by-day account of a trip through the Pennsylvania oil region" Streeter.
