1919ref. 858N17London: Chatto & Windus 1919. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 11.5" by 9". Muirhead Bone. A first edition of this interesting volume describing the work of the Merchants' army in the First World War. With illustrations by Muirhead Bone. A first edition of David Bone's account of the Merchant Navy during the First World War with numerous illustrations by Scottish etcher and watercolourist Muirhead Bone including twenty eight full page illustrations collated and complete. Written between the shipping crisis of 1917 and the surrender of German undersea arms in 1918 this volume records the work of the Merchants' Service in the First World War. Thrust into the conflict the Merchants' Service became the suppliers of the Royal Navy carrying troops raw materials and armaments to the armed forces as well as transporting food coal and iron to Britain's home front. Divided into three parts David Bone discusses the relationship of the Merchants' Service to the navy and the state before elaborating on their various systems along with writings from the unsung heroes themselves. Muirhead Bone was best known for his work as a war artist in both world wars. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards a little more so to the joints. Lightly bumped and rubbed to the head and tail of the spine with some marginal wear towards the extremities. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good Chatto & Windus hardcover

1949ref. 6137London United Kingdom: Chatto & Windus 1949. First Edition. hardcover. Very Good. Muirhead Bone. Publication: London Chatto & Windus 1949 Formatting: 8vo pp. xx 332. Condition Report: Very Good. The volume presents very well tightly bound in its original quarter leather and cloth boards which remain clean and highly attractive under the protective mylar sleeve. There is some minor rubbing and gentle sunning to the leather spine particularly at the head tail and joints though the gilt tooling and lettering remain strong and legible. The text block's untrimmed fore and bottom edges show characteristic mild age-toning while the top edge gilt retains much of its original lustre. Internally the binding is firm square and tight. The pages are predominantly crisp and clean throughout with only faint occasional spotting that does not detract from the striking drypoint illustrations or the reading experience. Catalogue Note: This is a highly desirable special limited edition of Merchantman Rearmed strictly restricted to just 160 printed copies of which 150 were offered for sale. This specific volume is hand-numbered 148 and features the author’s signature in blue ink on the limitation page. It is attractively bound in quarter leather over light blue buckram boards finished with a gilt top edge and untrimmed page edges that highlight its premium tactile production. The text is notably enhanced by the artwork of the author’s brother the renowned war artist Sir Muirhead Bone. His evocative drypoint drawings including a striking frontispiece portrait of the author provide a visceral immediate visual accompaniment to the narrative. Due to the strict limitation and the passage of time intact and signed copies of this special edition are seldom encountered on the open market elevating it significantly above the standard trade run and making it an excellent acquisition for collectors of maritime or Second World War history. In Merchantman Rearmed Master Mariner Sir David W. Bone delivers a gripping firsthand account of the British Merchant Navy's harrowing experiences during the Second World War. Thrust into the frontline of a global conflict civilian sailors faced the constant terrifying threats of U-boat wolfpacks and enemy aircraft while striving to maintain the vital supply lines that kept the Allied war effort alive. Combining personal wartime experience including his participation in the invasion of Sicily with broad historical insight this memoir stands as a profound testament to the resilience sacrifice and unyielding spirit of the merchant seamen who braved the world's most dangerous waters.
