Le Languedocien Thomas Arbousset fut, avec Eugène Casalis, un des grands missionnaires protestants français, qui choisirent l'Afrique comme terrain d'évangélisation : en 1832, il fut envoyé en Afrique australe, où les missions existantes venaient d'être détruites par les incursions des Barotsis et des Matabélés. Il y commença un long apostolat, qui se doubla de l'observation géographique et ethnographique de régions encore très mal connues (les Boers n'y avaient pas encore dirigé leurs treks).
