ref. acs757Published by the author 2017. First Edition. Signed by the Author. Octavo softbound slick full-color photo. illus. stiff wrappers 249 pp. Fine. From lower cover: Mort McBride tired of being lost in time decides to end it all. His suicide effort fails. Extracted from his present into the far future of an improbable parallel universe he finds himself to be a slave sent back to locations in Florida’s past to obtain items for his masters. Throughout he struggles to find out what is going on and what he can do about it. Into his life comes a pleasant at first unwanted surprise. The Gatherers is in response to numerous requests for a sequel to his Florida-based alternate history novel Citrus White Gold. Additional works are a haunting parallel universe romance Dead Not Dead and two collections of short stories You Can’t Pick up Raindrops and He Hears the Rocks. From review: Before I read Citrus White Gold I didn’t know much about Florida History even though I’ve lived here for the past twenty years. John Miller provides a fascinating look back into history and paints pictures rich with detail. Beyond that though Miller is a fantastic storyteller. The book may be listed as an alternate history which it is -- but it is also an adventure story with unique characters and a plot with a humorous ending ‘twist’ that left me chuckling days after I finished the book. I though “I can’t wait for the sequel.” paperback books

1925ref. 252740New York: Alfred.A.Knopf.Publisher 1925. Magazine. 4p. 31-313 of the entire magazine 257-384 lxxii ads mag measures 10x7 inches. Externally this issue is edgeworn with a chip near the head and weak hinges; a former owner has neatly enclosed covers with a clear plastic-like adhesive sheet that strengthens and preserves; without it front cover would be detached. Not a recent 'improvement" but it works well; we believe the material to be stick-on "shelfpaper;" unfortunately the process also seals in soil a fragment of flower-petal and an old pencilled price. Magazine contents Kelly's piece included are soundly bound clean and unmarked. A good good-only copy. Miller a mathematics prodigy who taught both mathematics and sociology during his long and distinguished tenure at Howard University developed a national reputation as a lecturer and writer. Initially critical of Booker T. Washington's Atlanta Compromise he grew sceptical of other political positions taken by African American leaders particularly those of the Niagara Movement as he searched for a common ground between radicals and conservatives in the fight angainst racism. RACE ADJUSTMENT reflects his goal of going beyond industrial education "The ideal is not a working man but a man working" to a fuller integration of African Americans into all aspects of American society.
