Much of contemporary visual culture can be traced directly to the work of Eadweard Muybridge photographer and film pioneer. His work is powered by an extreme obsessionality excess and ordinariness that enabled him to negate all preconceptions and to re-conceptualize the dynamics of corporeal and urban forms. He created a moving-image projector the Zoopraxiscope for his sequences of human and animal movement thus construction the first identifiably cinematic space for his images' projection to spectators-- Edited summary from back cover. 2016réf. 156996Venezia: Marsilio 2016. Grey/color-illus. wraps; white lettering on grey spine. Acetate half wrapper with white lettering. Text in Italian. Catalogue from the exhibition held at Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi Firenze 19 March - 24 July 2016. Curated by Luca Massimo Barbero the exhibition – the result of a cooperative venture involving the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York – offered visitors a unique opportunity to compare and contrast the crucial work of European masters of modern art such as Marcel Duchamp Max Ernst Man Ray and Pablo Picasso and European masters of so-called Art Informel or “Unformed Art” such as Alberto Burri Emilio Vedova Jean Dubuffet Lucio Fontana with large paintings and sculptures by some of the most important personalities on the American art scene in the 1950s and 1960s such as Jackson Pollock Mark Rothko Willem de Kooning Alexander Calder Roy Lichtenstein and Cy Twombly. Devoting an exhibition to the Guggenheim collections means telling the fast-paced story of the birth of the Neo-Avant-Garde movements after World War II in a tight and uninterrupted interplay between European and American artists. But producing such an exceptional exhibition in Florence also means celebrating a very special tie that goes back a long way because it was precisely in the Palazzo Strozzi’s Strozzina undercroft that Peggy Guggenheim who had only recently arrived in Europe decided in February 1949 to show the collection that was later to find a permanent home in Venice. The large paintings sculptures engravings and photographs on display at Palazzo Strozzi on loan from the Guggenheim collections in New York and Venice and from other leading international museums paint a vast fresco of the extraordinarily heady season of 20th century art in which Peggy and Solomon Guggenheim played such a key role. - from the Palazzo Strozzi web site. At The Solicitation of numerous collectors of old English china bearing American views a series of illustrated papers was prepared by the writer and published in The Clay-Worker of Indianapolis Ind. In the introductory chapter nothing but a brief review of the earlier Liverpool designs was attempted because of the scarcity of such pieces at this late day. The main purpose of the compiler was to present as complete a list of the later Staffordshire designs in dark blue and other colors as possible so classified that the productions of each potter should be grouped together whereby the identification of unmarked pieces might be facilitated to some extent by means of common border devices. It was not deemed necessary to present detailed descriptions of views for the reason that they would not be required by collectors who possessed examples of china bearing the designs described nor carry definite meaning to those who did not. The need of a pocket manual of such china compact in arrangement and convenient for ready reference has long been felt. These lists have therefore been republished in a form suitable for collectors and others interested in the subject. The numbering of the American designs and border patterns will afford a convenient means of reference among correspondents and the index at the end will serve as a check list for collections. It was originally intended to indicate the shape of the piece or the size of the plate on which each design occurs but this classification was found to be well-nigh impossible on account of the apparent lack of any definite system followed by manufacturers in the decoration of pieces. réf. 38032Los Angeles: Fowler Museum No date. First edition. Softcover. New in publisher's shrink wrap. Large Quarto. 275 1pp. Original pictorial wrappers with white lettering on cover beige on spine. Decorative endpapers. Pictorial half-title. Illustrated title page. ".our subtitle 'a history of layers' reflects Professor Barber's command of a deep slice of European history enabling her to trace in chapter 1 how past influences have shaped the dress of southeastern Europeans leaving telltale clues in the accumulated layers of cloth that remain visible today. Professor Barber's long-standing love of the traditional dance of the region also informs her work as the clothing she discusses expresses its deepest social meanings in the context of village dancing. While Professor Barber uncovers 'layers' whose origins can be traced to periods ranging from the Neolithic to the Renaissance Charlotte Jirousek's contribution chapter 2 provides further insights regarding the last great pre modern cultural impulse that profoundly re-made southeastern Europe. This was the conquest of much of the region by the Ottoman Empire whose Muslims Turkish culture brought with it new ways of dressing." Roy W. Hamilton. Profusely illustrated with remarkable color photographs of dresses from the region. Fowler Museum unknown books
