1827rif. 41340Washington City: Printed for the Author by S. C. Ustick 1827. 48pp in contemporary plain wrappers. Stitching absent unbound. Faint rubberstamp on title page gum label at lower spine. Good plus. This is the first part of what became a three-part book. Each is a separate imprint. Parts II and III were printed in 1828 and 1832. Part II like the first Part was printed by Ustick in Washington. Part III was printed in Frederick Maryland by Neilson Poe. "The conversion of the Barber family despite the prejudices of a Puritan education and environment was one of the most notable and far-reaching in its results of any recorded in the early annals of the Church in New England. Daniel Barber has left a 'History of My Own Times' Washington 1827 in which he states that his father and mother were Congregational Dissenters of strict Puritanic rule and he continued in that sect until his twenty-seventh year when he joined the Episcopalians. Previous to this he had served two terms as a soldier in the Continental army" "Barber Family" by Thomas Francis Meehan Catholic Encyclopedia website accessed May 01 2026. "Daniel Barber came from good Puritan stock and was a fine upstanding Congregationalist minister. Until some Episcopalians convinced him that Apostolic Succession matters when it comes to ministerial Orders. So he became an Episcopalian priest. He was a fine upstanding Episcopalian priest for many years. He and his wife Chloe raised three children as good Episcopalians. But eventually the question of Apostolic Succession came back to him and he realized that Episcopalianism didn't satisfy the question of Apostolic Succession - the Catholics actually had it and the Episcopalians didn't. Meantime his son Virgil had also become a fine upstanding Episcopalian priest. He and his wife Jerusha were in charge of a good school and had a comfortable life with their children. But a chance encounter with a pamphlet on the life of St. Francis Xavier fired his heart to seek the faith that motivated a man like St. Francis to do what he'd done. Eventually Virgil and Jerusha became Catholic. Then Chloe converted along with a number of other members of the family. And finally Daniel also became Catholic. The entire affair was very upsetting to fine upstanding New England Protestant sensibilities and caused a sensation" "Barber Family" by Thomas Francis Meehan Catholic Encyclopedia website accessed May 01 2026. Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 2005 Large Hardcover. 360 pp. From the earliest of times maps have fired our imaginations and helped us make sense of our world from the global to the very local. Head of Map Collections at the British Library Peter Barber has here compiled an historic and lavish atlas charting the progress of civilization as our knowledge of the world expanded. Simply organized as a progression through time The Map Book collects some 175 maps that span four millennia - from the famed prehistoric Bedolina Italy incision in rock from around 1500 B.C. to the most modern digitally enhanced rendering. Many of the maos are beautiful works of art in their own right. From Europe to the Americas Africa to Asia north to south there are maps of oceans and continents charted by heroic adventurers sailing into the unknown as accounts spread of new discoveries shadowy continents begin to appear n the margins of the world often labeled 'unknown lands.' Other maps had a more practical use: some demarcated national boundaries or individual plots of land; military plans depicted enemy positions; propaganda treatises showed one country or faction at an advantage over others. So much history resides in each map--cultural mythological navigational--expressing the unlimited extent of human imagination. This is captured in the accompanying texts--mini essays by leading map historians--that are as vivid and insightful as the maps themselves. They make The Map Book as much a volume to be read as to be visually admired. Levenger Press / Walker & Company hardcover books

1863rif. List308N.p. 1863. Dark carved wood 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 1 inches with bone border and star inlays in corners an inlaid tree with carved names of Civil War battles as leaves. During the Civil War wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common with pipes being the most commonly carved object and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber from Wisconsin was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South Army of Virginia & of the Potomac and Dept. of the West with twenty-nine leaves naming battles. The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness craftsmanship and overall aesthetic beauty. Barber’s metaphorically growing tree is particularly timely for the Union cause as the 1863 failure of the Maryland Campaign would serve as inspiration to Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Wonderfully preserved in excellent condition with no notable flaws. From the collection of Norm Flaydernman the noted Americana dealer who personally collected carved Civil War pipes and had been planning to write a book on the subject at the time of his death. unknown books
