How a single balloon flight and the resulting photographs fit into the context of the history of aerial photography is revealed in this fascinating new book. During the First World War the true potential of aerial photography as a reconnaissance technique was realised. The Second World War saw even greater resources invested in aerial photography and the training of skilled specialist staff to interpret the millions of photographs taken from aircraft. After the First World War it became apparent how techniques developed within the context of warfare could serve non-military uses including archaeology. Between the wars aerial photography had a considerable impact on our understanding of the past particularly once the significance and extent of cropmarks became apparent - the airborne camera could record sites and landscapes that were often invisible from the ground. As examples of recent and current archaeological work are explored it becomes apparent just how far we have progressed in the use of aerial photography to record and interpret past landscapes. The book includes 200 colour and black and white photographs ranging from images of early balloon exploits and intriguing photographs from the Boer War to reconnaissance views from the World Wars and modern aerial shots of archaeological sites. . 2012. 1848020368 . This beautifully illustrated book charts that growth and the city’s transformation through hundreds of maps culled from the collection of the British Library’s Map Library. These visual records range from sweeping images of the entire city to nuanced studies of its elements and neighborhoods. Including official documents individual endeavors hand-drawn renditions and technologically advanced replicas these maps represent a variety of perspectives. Utilitarian maps show the city as it is and serve to elucidate its inner workings while carefully wrought plans show the city as it was envisioned—whether those plans were executed or not. The maps and panoramas collected here are more than topographical records. They all convey unique insight into the concerns assumptions ambitions and prejudices of Londoners at the time the maps were created. In addition to offering readers a tour of London past and present this book reveals the inside story of the creation growth and change of one of the world’s greatest cities. . 2012. 071235879X . Tremlett's penchants for open spaces and non-conventional places have led him to install many works that would eventually degrade in all corners of the world. Today many of his installations are produced with the knowledge that they will be painted over and that knowledge is part of the work itself. This volume collects drawings site-specific projects and a series of photographs documenting Tremlett's recent show at Galleria G7 in Bologna. David Tremlett was born in Cornwall U.K. in 1945. In 1992 he was nominated for the Turner Prize. Solo exhibitions of his work have been mounted at London's Tate Gallery 1972 New York's Museum of Modern Art 1973 Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum 1979 and Paris' Centre Pompidou 1985 among other international venues. A solo exhibition of his work was mounted in 2008 at Gering & Lopez Gallery in New York. . 2008. 8862080832 . Damiani paperback

We know their names and recall the place of each in our nation's history. But do we recognize their faces and those of the dozens of their contemporaries who forged a new and forward-looking America during the Civil War era Faces of Discord is a look into the real faces of the leading historical figures of this turbulent and transformative time. Compiled from the collections of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery these depictions include those of Abraham Lincoln Robert E. Lee Ulysses S. Grant John S. Mosby George Armstrong Custer and many others who were painted sculpted and photographed by the foremost artists of the day. More than just arresting pictures in a book these “faces of discord” represent historical portraits of the period some of which were once owned by the famous sitters themselves and passed down to the Smithsonian by their descendants. The National Portrait Gallery is a fitting repository for these images in part because the gallery occupies the building that was used as a barracks and hospital for Federal troops during the war and was the site of Lincoln's second inaugural ball. Faces of Discord also tells the stories of the extraordinary lives behind the faces that changed the course of American history. Selected exclusively from Smithsonian collections and illustrated within Faces of Discord are rarely seen personal possessions and memorabilia associated with many of these historical figures who still command our attention and so vividly animate these pages. . 2006. 0061135844 . Description: "The experimental character of Stockholm's renowned Modern art museum the Moderna Museet was formed in the late 1950s and early 60s with influences coming primarily from Paris and New York. To mark the museum's fiftieth anniversary this year three exhibitions focus on other creative hubs--Rio Milan-Turin and Los Angeles--during that exciting period. Three volumes available singly or in this 3-volume slipcased edition are definitive resources on this trio of cultural centers that don't often get center stage. In the 1950s Rio expanded into a metropolis of nearly 2.5 million inhabitants. The word of the moment was new: Neoconcretism in art Bossa Nova in music and Cinema Novo in film. The first volume of this set explores this theme with work by Lygia Clark Helio Oiticica and Lygia Pape among others. The second volume of this edition explores the influential Northern Italian art scene between 1958 and 1968. Highlights include a history of Arte Povera and an introduction to film and design trends of the time. Artists like Lucio Fontana Piero Manzoni and Michelangelo Pistoletto are surveyed in detail. The third volume of the Place & Time series highlights the interplay of utopia and dystopia--sunshine and noir--that characterized Los Angeles in the postwar era and which has since vitally impacted contemporary art. Works by Ed Ruscha David Hockney Ed Kienholz Sam Francis and James Turrell among others form the core of the volume and the diversity of artistic practices explored here reveal similar influences but a variety of media and methodologies. Also included are key illustrations of how the era was defined in all areas of culture: for example Arts & Architecture magazine's experimental program for residential architecture the Case Study Houses--an example of the utopian side of the California scene at that time--which aimed to create well-designed and inexpensive housing for soldiers returning from World War II.
