Several are in the style of the "Amsterdamse School" a style transitional between Jugendstil and Art Deco. A few with some creases and folds but mostly in a good condition. 1828ref. 5945París France: Paulot & Carré 1828. Wallpaper broadside 45 x 51 cm. with seven-color woodcut black orange green blue white gray and brown. Printed on a brown paper coated with a pale blue pigment. The text states "Bonne double bierre" and the scene depicts four soldiers in uniform being waited on by a woman. She pours a seated soldier a drink while another stands with his hand draped around her shoulder. Two more soldiers share a smoke appearing to have had a few drinks already. Only the woman is clearly not enjoying herself. There are no identifying marks or labels on the broadside or on the matte but the stated publisher and date and the attribution to the printers Paulot & Carré are inferred by comparison with a print of the same series in the collection of the Museé du Papier Peint in Rexheim France. That print with the same text background color print colors and rough size depicts two women and a child seated under an arbor with a military officer enjoying a drink. Two exhibitions at Rixheim included that print; three similar prints were included in the groundbreaking exhibition by wallpaper collector and manufacturer Félix Follot Papiers peints à l'exposition universelle internationales de 1900 à Paris. Three similar prints were shown at the Exposition notice 156 "Deux affiches illustrées imprimées chez Paulot et Carré 1828-1830 Bière Cidre" and notice 158 "Affiche illustrée 'Bonne double bierre'" 1828. The two scenes described here were issued interchangeably with a number of texts including "Bonne Double Bierre" "Petite Biere" "Biere Cidre" and "Eau de Vie de Cognac". Unevenly cut with wide margins; affixed to modern matte with two small cloth hinges; one small cloth repair to verso. Some rubbing to surface of print and a bit of color loss to the face of one character and general light creasing. Still near very good. Rare. Félix Follot. ref. 79044Budapest Hincz 1909. Folio 40.5 x 26.0 cm. Original blind half cloth over pebbled boards. 158 samples each ca. 16.0 x 21.0 cm on 79 leaves. Large title leaf mounted on the front board and price list mounted on the front pastedown. = A very rare Art Nouveau/Jugendstil pochoir wallpaper catalogue Made by the Budapester stencil manufacturers Hincz Lajos és Fia Lajos Hincz and Son. A wealth of designs mostly in pure Jugendstil or Art Nouveau is shown each represented by a rectangular sample two mounted on each leaf often together with a more or less matching ornamental border strip. The firm's address is given as Futó-Utcza 17 a building which does not exist anymore. An earlier name apparently given to the firm in 1907 was First Hungarian Artistic Painting Pattern and Relief Relievo Factory. At that time the firm was located at Prater Utcza 28 which still exists. The firm however seems to have disappeared without a trace. Wear to the boards mainly to the edges; some fraying and very short tears to the fore edges; some staining to the endpapers in particular to the lower margins; some marginal staining to the mounts one mount partly torn margins intact the samples however nearly all in fine condition; clean except for some annotations here and there e.g. catalogue numbers; several with different designs on versos. We found no other copies of this catalogue or similar catalogues from the same firm on the internet or elsewhere. hardcover

A fine set of two very large sheets 119 x 73 cm each with pochoir designs with flowers and birds for wallpaper or similar ornamental purposes. = A rare collection of very large original wall-paper artwork. The pochoir process involves the application of gouache or watercolour pigments through the medium of stencils by which many different colours could be applied layer after layer to a single print. The patterns show an interesting variety in colour based on the same design. This is an early work of the French firm of Paul Dumas operative from 1906 to 1978 renowned for its high-quality wallpaper and wallpaper design. The designs are reminiscent of the work of Paul Poiret who worked for Dumas. Poiret 1879-1944 "was a leading French fashion designer during the first two decades of the 20th century. His contributions to his field have been likened to Picasso's legacy in 20th-century art" Wikipedia. In all this forms an extraordinary collection of practical design in pattern and coloration. Original cloth binding with full-colour photoprint mounted on the front board and title in brown on the front board and spine. Typed 1939 price list mounted on front board verso. = A large complete copy of a wallpaper catalogue with many fine examples of wallpaper in various styles en vogue just before WWII. Peculiar and perhaps a novelty are the occasional interior view drawings with a cut out of the walls each showing the wallpaper sample. Rath and Doodeheefver was a leading Amsterdam-based firm founded in 1890 and active until its sudden bankruptcy in 1998 after wallpaper rather quickly fell out of fashion. Boards a bit soiled and worn with some staining; the printed year 1938 both on the spine and front board crossed out and replaced by '1939' in blue crayon; the interior leaves with cutouts a bit damp stained in their right margins a few samples a bit creased in lower outer corners otherwise fine. A very good copy. hardcover
