This is believed to have been the copy of Thomas Leonard Mikules who served in the United States Navy Reserve 1941-1946.; Member of the Naval Institute . This is an account of how the American merchant marine paced by the passenger liners in the first half of the 19th Century climaxed two centuries of unparalleled progress with a prodigious burst of speed to overtake and by-pass the greatest sea powers in history. Carl Cutler was born on August 12 1878 in Kingston Michigan and was one of the three founders of the Marine Historical Association. In 1882 the Cutlers moved to Rhode Island where Carl first experienced sailing and the sea. Later in his 20th year he made a voyage before the mast on the bark ALICE to New Zealand. After another year at sea he entered college graduating from Brown University in 1903. After post graduate work at Columbia Cutler was admitted to the bar in 1906 and began his law career with Anderson & Anderson in New York City. In 1913 he married Miss Helen Grant Irving whose father owned a shipyard in West Mystic Connecticut. After World War I Cutler began to actively pursue a lifelong interest the history of American shipping. With thoroughness and dedication he spent years in research at libraries custom houses and seaports from Rockland Maine to Baltimore Maryland. He searched the old shipyards and homes of old builders where he found many original models and artifacts. He examined over 5000 logbooks discovered and read uncounted numbers of manuscripts and compiled from accurate sources over 30000 index cards which recorded arrivals and departures for thousands of vessels. The result of this research was a book entitled "Greyhounds of the Sea the story of the American clipper ship" a book which according to many established Mr. Cutler as a dean among American maritime historians. In 1929 Carl Cutler helped to found the Marine Historical Association. In 1938 he became General Manager and later Curator of the Association and in effect directed the Museum until he retired in 1952. As Curator Emeritus Mr. Cutler continued his research and wrote the book "Queens of the Western Ocean" a history of American packet ships. He also remained active in the Museum until his death on February 20 1966. United States Naval Institute hardcover

His first book "The Year of the Green Wave " was published in 1960 and was followed over the next 40 years by a dozen more. His "The Massacre at Sand Creek" told the story of the massacre of hundreds of Cheyenne by the U.S. Cavalry. Published in 1995 and nominated for a National Book Award the poem explained the attack from several points of view including the officer who led the assault an officer who refused to let his men fire on the Indians and the Cheyenne themselves. Born in Evanston Ill. Cutler was a conscientious objector to military service in the early 1950s and after a legal challenge performed alternate service in Mexico and El Salvador. A graduate of the University of Iowa Cutler taught English at Wichita State where he founded the school's creative writing program. Cutler's last book "At War With Mexico: A Fictional Mosaic " came out a week before his death on March 24 in Santa Cruz of complications from kidney cancer." He was appointed the fifth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1946. Karl Shapiro was born in Baltimore Maryland. He attended the University of Virginia before World War II and immortalized it in a scathing poem called "University " which noted that "to hate the Negro and avoid the Jew is the curriculum." He did not return after his military service. Karl Shapiro a stylish writer with a commendable regard for his craft wrote poetry in the Pacific Theater while he served there during World War II. His collection V-Letter and Other Poems written while Shapiro was stationed in New Guinea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1945 while Shapiro was still in the military. Shapiro was American Poet Laureate in 1946 and 1947. At the time this title was Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress which was changed by Congress in 1985 to Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Poems from his earlier books display a mastery of formal verse with a modern sensibility that viewed such topics as automobiles house flies and drug stores as worthy of attention. In his later work he experimented with more open forms beginning with The Bourgeois Poet 1964 and continuing with White-Haired Lover 1968. The influences of Walt Whitman D. H. Lawrence W. H. Auden and William Carlos Williams were evident in his work. Shapiro's interest in formal verse and prosody led to his writing multiple books on the subject including the long poem Essay on Rime 1945 A Bibliography of Modern Prosody 1948 and A Prosody Handbook with Robert Beum 1965; reissued 2006. His Selected Poems appeared in 1968. Shapiro also published one novel Edsel 1971 and a three-part autobiography simply titled "Poet" 1988 1990. Shapiro edited the prestigious magazine Poetry for several years and he was a professor of English at the University of Nebraska Lincoln where he edited Prairie Schooner and at the University of California Davis from which he retired in the mid-1980s. His other works include Person Place and Thing 1942 with Ernst Lert the libretto to Hugo Weisgall's opera The Tenor 1950 To Abolish Children 1968 and The Old Horsefly 1993. Shapiro received the 1969 Bollingen Prize for Poetry sharing the award that year with John Berryman. He died in New York City aged 86 on May 14 2000." University of Nebraska Press paperback

This book has been called the best account of the Battle of Leyte Gulf ever written. Published on the battle's fiftieth anniversary in 1994 and drawing on materials not previously available it blends history with human drama to give a real sense of what happened--despite the mammoth scope of the battle. Every facet of naval warfare was involved in the struggle that engaged some two hundred thousand men and 282 American Japanese and Australian ships over more than a hundred thousand square miles of sea. The award-winning author saw combat service aboard many types of ships during his naval career and as a historian and professor of strategy and policy at the Naval War College he has studied the battle for many years. Cutler captures the milieu analyzes the strategy and tactics employed and re-creates the experiences of the participants--from seaman to admiral both Japanese and American. It is a story replete with awe-inspiring heroism failed intelligence flawed strategy brilliant deception great controversies and a cast of characters with names like Halsey Nimitz Ozawa and MacArthur. Such an exciting and revealing account of the battle is unlikely to be equaled by future writers. HarperCollins Publishers hardcover
