1884réf. 375851The Builder London 1884. Framed Print. Fine Condition. The chromolithograph of the BilliardÔÇæRoom at Wortley Hall printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son in 1884 captures one of the more refined examples of lateÔÇæVictorian interior decoration. The plate shows Sir Edward John PoynterÔÇÖs ornamental scheme in full colour: a disciplined classical vocabulary arranged with the painterÔÇÖs characteristic clarity rhythm and archaeological fastidiousness. PoynterÔÇÖs decorative work of this period often balanced scholarly classicism with a modern sense of pattern and surface and the Wortley Hall commission is a textbook instance ÔÇö a ceiling divided into formal compartments enriched coves and a frieze designed to harmonise with the proportions of the room. The accompanying doubleÔÇæpage plain plate gives the measured geometry of the cove and centre panels the sort of technical supplement The Building News routinely issued to show how the decorative scheme was constructed. PoynterÔÇÖs interior designs form a small but distinguished part of his oeuvre. Better known for large mythological canvases and his later role as President of the Royal Academy he nevertheless produced several notable decorative schemes for aristocratic houses always marked by a disciplined classicism and a painterÔÇÖs sensitivity to colour. His work at Wortley Hall reflects the Victorian belief that the decorative arts should be intellectually grounded ÔÇö ornament not as mere embellishment but as a coherent extension of architectural form. In this sense the 1884 chromolithograph is more than a record of a fashionable interior: it is a document of PoynterÔÇÖs broader ambition to bring academic art archaeological knowledge and modern craftsmanship into a single unified decorative programme. The illustrations found in leading architectural journals of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as The Builder Building News and The Architect are masterpieces of visual craftsmanship. These illustrations capture the elegance intricacy and stylistic flair of the periodÔÇÖs architecture. Rich in ornamental detail and atmospheric depth they reflect not only the buildings themselves but the artistic sensibilities and design discourse of their age. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL PAGE FROM THE JOURNAL PRINTED AT THE DATE SHOWN IN THE TITLE NOT A REPRINT OR COPY. In a perspex fronted rustic finish A4 frame with glass-like clarity for the chromolithograph print.
