WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR OF ONE OF THE PLATES The meeting of the Emperors of Russia and Austria King of Prussia & Crown Prince of Sweden in the Great Square of Leipzig Oct. 18th 1813 SIGNED W. Heath 1814. A Large Paper Copy. Abbey Life 365; Prideaux p. 34; Tooley 281. Slight variation in color of spine leather a bit of shelfwear to tail edge of boards just a hint of wear elsewhere; tissue guards somewhat foxed but text and plates happily unaffected. AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY--entirely clean fresh and bright internally with vibrant coloring in a stately binding brimming with extravagantly glittering gilt. In a spectacular period binding this monumental copy of Jenkins' tribute to the British army is accompanied by an original watercolor by its illustrator. Dedicated to the Duke of Wellington who Jenkins writes in the dedicatory letter has "raised the character of the British soldier in the scale of humanity" this volume is a celebration of the victory of Britain and its allies in the Napoleonic Wars. The richly colored plates are the work of William Heath 1794/5-1840; his original watercolor offered with our volume corresponds to the plate "Entrance of the Allied Sovereigns into Leipsic sic" commemorating a decisive victory for Britain and its allies that ended Napoleon's occupation east of the Rhine and paved the way for his eventual total defeat. The watercolor reveals a notable level of delicacy with carefully rendered details emerging from the hazy clouds of battle. Now best remembered for his career as a cartoonist and caricaturist Heath began as a military painter with the present work being his best known from the period. Full of movement and drama his scenes depict pivotal moments from major British military campaigns and are accompanied by descriptions of each battle often including excerpts from the letters or reports of the officers involved. In addition to its memorable binding and its early watermarks our copy is distinguished by its size--it measures a full three inches taller than the Abbey copy with broad impressive margins around the text and illustrations. 1847réf. 12043Bremen: F C Dubbers 1847. First Edition. Contemporary marbled boards. Very good. 8vo viii 1 - 126 pp. A succinct and rare manual for ship-board medical treatment written by a 'practical' physician that is accompanied by a supplement or appendix listing the medicines contained in the medical kit and finally a brief section on herbs and their use in cooking. Indicating the prevalence of ailments aboard ship the text is divided into sections dealing with fever inflammation nervous ailments gastric ailments infectious disease esp. typhus. Wounds etc. are briefly covered. Emphasis is on true illness. It is remarkable that this book was written by an apprenticed 'physician' who considers each ailment from practical experience rather than a clincal perspective. Such manuals do appear in English; they are usually brief. This German language manual is unusual since there was little voyaging originating in Germany at this time - coastal trips being the norm and therefore not out of range of quick medical assistance if needed. Therefore its detailed text outlining symptoms and treatment and the list of medicines are beyond what is encountered in the English language pamphlets of the period. Unlocated. Bound in pink and green cloth with color plate mounted to the center front board. No jacket as issued. 157 pages : color illustrations ; 29 cm. "An exploration of how the biblical heroine Queen Esther a symbol of resilience and a figure of immense popularity was portrayed in seventeenth-century Dutch art. In the age of Rembrandt van Rijn the biblical Book of Esther was a popular source of inspiration for diverse communities in the Netherlands both Jewish and Christian. Traditionally the Esther story is read annually on the Jewish holiday of Purim. For immigrant Jewish communities living with new freedom in more tolerant Amsterdam celebrating Purim--notably through finely produced Esther scrolls and theater productions-became a meaningful expression of Jewish culture. For the Dutch Queen Esther's heroism came to represent their emerging nation's identity. Rembrandt and his contemporaries depicted essential scenes of Esther's story in paintings prints drawings and decorative arts. Examining how Esther was represented in art and popular culture in Rembrandt's time this beautifully illustrated volume includes essays that discuss the visual culture and ceremonial art of Purim and examine the queen's status as a heroine in seventeenth-century Netherlands. A postscript reveals Esther's continued appeal through a close look at work by contemporary American artist Fred Wilson who reimagines the biblical heroine as the abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Published in association with the Jewish Museum New York and the North Carolina Museum of Art Raleigh"-- Provided by publisher. Remainder mark minor tear to spine base. 2005 Trade Paperback. xii 204 pp. In this book Timothy Silver traces the effects of English settlement on South Atlantic ecology showing how all three cultures--Indian European and African--interacted with and were in turn affected by their changing environment. In assessing such ecological changes Silver pays particular attention to regional variations explaining how local geography and settlement patterns influenced the environment. And while his focus is the English South Silver also shows us how economic and ecological developments in Europe the Caribbean and elsewhere frequently dictated how South Atlantic colonists used their land. Consequently his book provides an engaging and detailed look at the complex relationships among humans plants and animals in a unique and diverse region of North America. Limitation page hand-numbered No. 37/100. Book housed in its matching publisher's slipcase with b/w photographic reproduction pasted onto front cover. Completed in 1936 in Palestine where Swiss Avant-Garde portrait photographer Helmar Lerski had immigrated in 1932 "Metamorphosis through Light" is a stunning 'tour de force' in which Lerski carried his talent to extremes. With the help of up to 16 mirrors and filters he directed the natural light of the sun in constant new variations and refractions onto his model the Bernese-born at the time out-of-work draughtsman and light athlete Leo Uschatz. Thus he achieved in a series of over 140 close-ups "hundreds of different faces including that of a hero a prophet a peasant a dying soldier an old woman and a monk from one single original face" Siegfried Kracauer in "Theory of Film" Oxford University Press 1960 p. 162. According to Lerski these pictures were intended to provide proof "that the lens does not have to be objective that the photographer can with the help of light work freely characterize freely according to his inner face." Laid in at rear inside a white envelope is a splendid silver gelatin print 10 3/4 x 8 1/2" produced by German photographer André Gelpke from Helmar Lerski's original plate. The print depicts a close-up portrait of Leo Uschatz not featured in the book. The verso has been hand-captioned numbered and signed by Gelpke. One of 100 copies of which this is No. 37. Minor shelf wear and sporadic fraying along edges of slipcase. Head of spine slightly bumped not affecting pages throughout. Text in German and English. Slipcase in overall good binding in good to very good interior and silver gelating print in very good condition. About the author: Helmar Lerski 1871-1956 was born in Strasburg then part of the German empire as Israel Schmuklerski. His parents were Jewish immigrants of Polish origin. In 1876 the family moved to Zurich Switzerland where they obtained Swiss citizenship. Lerski moved to New York in 1893 at the age of twenty-two to work as an actor changing his name in 1896. He spent several years with a German theatre company in Chicago and Milwaukee where he met his first wife a photographer. In 1911 Lerski began to experiment with photography by adapting dramatic stage lighting techniques to portrait photographs of fellow actors. In 1912 Lerski was encouraged to pursue a career in photography by Rudolph Dührkoop who had come to St. Louis to demonstrate his photographic techniques. In 1914/15 he taught German language and literature at the University of Texas in Austin. In 1915 after more than twenty years in America Lerski moved to Berlin and after showing his portraits was asked to become a cameraman at the UFA studios where he worked as a cameraman and expert for special effects for many films including Fritz Lang's movie Metropolis 1927. Lang wanted to insert the actors into shots of miniatures of skyscrapers and other buildings so Lerski used specially made mirrors to create the illusion of actors interacting with huge realistic-looking sets. With fascism on the rise Lerski immigrated to Palestine where he worked as a director and cameraman for documentary films. After the war Lerski moved back to Zurich where he spent the rest of his life. Luca Verlag hardcover books

Abbey Scenery 212; Tooley 7. Joints and extremities slightly rubbed but the bindings still splendid despite their signs of use and looking magnificent on the shelf. Offsetting from plates onto facing page as usual with this book about a fourth of the plates with significant transfer another fourth with none or almost none the remaining half with something in between but the plates with lovely rich coloring and with no offsetting of the text onto plate images and the text printed within spacious margins very fresh and unsoiled. Deemed by Abbey "a colour-plate book of great importance" Ackermann's pictorial tour of London is offered here in elegant bindings by an important English workshop. According to Tooley this is "one of the great colour-plate books" that "should form the corner stone of any collection of books on this subject. The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivalled picture of London in early 19th century" and are consequently "of historic value as many of the buildings no longer exist." DNB calls "Microcosm" "an acknowledged masterpiece" the success of which led to Ackermann's volumes on Westminster Abbey and the colleges at Oxford Cambridge and Winchester a series considered "among the most beautiful illustrated books of the first half of the nineteenth century." Artist Thomas Rowlandson 1756-1827 is remembered for his caricatures and humorous illustrations but he made his name illustrating the travel books with views he would later satirize in his "Doctor Syntax" volumes. According to DNB publisher Rudolph Ackermann "kept Rowlandson in almost continuous employment producing drawings for the fine colour-plate books for which his firm the Repository of Arts at 101 Strand became famous. . . . Augustus Pugin was brought in to draw the architecture" for the present work while Rowlandson supplied the figures. Our binder Riviere is one of the foremost names in the field partly because the firm did consistently fine work and partly because it was so long in business. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829 then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. The present set is an excellent example of the firm's work and the bindings along with the richness of the plates and the capacious margins here make this an especially appealing copy. The early watermark dates of 1806 and 1807 are a further attractive feature as they suggest strong coloring on plate surfaces that have not suffered significant degradation. R. With cracking across image not affecting visibility; very good plus. A press photo of the cabin at Matchless Mine in Leadville Colorado where the body of Baby Doe Tabor was found. Tabor had lived destitute in the mining shack for nearly three decades and had frozen to death after a heavy snowstorm. Her life before that however had been legendary. Tabor born Elizabeth McCourt 1854-1935 grew up in poverty but came to be one of the wealthiest women in the mining West known for her looks and expensive dress. Her second husband was "Silver King" Horace Tabor a prospector businessman and politician who was nearly thirty years her senior. The couple lived in luxury in Denver from their marriage in 1883 until 1893 when the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act collapsed the silver market and caused the Panic of 1893 and their fortune was lost. Horace Tabor died a few years later and Baby shortly moved into the shack at Matchless Mine which had previously belonged to her husband. The rise and fall of the Tabors inspired the 1932 movie Silver Dollar and 1956 opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. ACME Newspictures unknown books
