First and only edition, small 4to, [8]pp., 5 fine hand-coloured plates, orig. drab wrappers with printed title label on upper cover, a very good copy in unsophisticated original condition. The engravings feature illustrations of four types of mushroom from the genus Agaricus - Campestris (the true edible mushroom), Georgii (St. George's mushroom, or, white caps), Pratensis (the true champignon) and Virosus (which closely resembles it) - all of which also appear in the third and final part of James Sowerby's "Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms" published in 1815. James de Carle Sowerby assisted his father in several works and the appearance and composition of the illustrations of the respective mushroom types in each work are similar, though not identical. Nissen, BBI 1876; Freeman, 3503. Scarce, with Copac showing only 3 copies in the UK (BL, Oxford and Natural History Museum).

1898231 pages. History certainly does repeat itself as the following statement appears upon the title page: "Equity and justice demand that the merchant, manufacturer, farmer, and wage-earner shall receive as much consideration at the hands of the law-makers as is accorded to those who deal in money." Clearly, the author would not be a fan of Goldman Sachs and their modern-day ilk. Chapter titles include the following: Thirty Years' Fall in Prices; Disastrous Effects of Falling Prices; Opinions Regarding the Cause of the Fall in Prices; Money, its use and abuse; Our Money a Banker's Money; A Monetary System Which Will Restore Prosperity; Bimetallism as a Cure; Immigration; Trusts and Department Stores as a Cause; Overproduction; Hard Times - The Effect of "Improved Machinery"; Confidence; Supply and Demand; Review and Summary of Overproduction; Review and Summary of Bimetallism; Conclusion. Tissue-protected black and white photographic frontisplate of author. Bright gilt lettering upon maroon backstrip and decorated front board. Prior owner's signature upon front free endpaper, otherwise unmarked. Moderate wear. Binding sound. An above-average copy of this important and timely work. Book

1847ref. 12043Bremen: F C Dubbers 1847. First Edition. Contemporary marbled boards. Very good. 8vo viii 1 - 126 pp. A succinct and rare manual for ship-board medical treatment written by a 'practical' physician that is accompanied by a supplement or appendix listing the medicines contained in the medical kit and finally a brief section on herbs and their use in cooking. Indicating the prevalence of ailments aboard ship the text is divided into sections dealing with fever inflammation nervous ailments gastric ailments infectious disease esp. typhus. Wounds etc. are briefly covered. Emphasis is on true illness. It is remarkable that this book was written by an apprenticed 'physician' who considers each ailment from practical experience rather than a clincal perspective. Such manuals do appear in English; they are usually brief. This German language manual is unusual since there was little voyaging originating in Germany at this time - coastal trips being the norm and therefore not out of range of quick medical assistance if needed. Therefore its detailed text outlining symptoms and treatment and the list of medicines are beyond what is encountered in the English language pamphlets of the period. Unlocated. Upper cover with small dark stain spine sunned to a soft tan head of spine with small chip minor wear to front joint and corners but the binding solid and pleasant; text leaves with mild foxing due to paper quality but the plates happily unaffected and still bright with vivid coloring. In a stylish contemporary binding and with illustrations depicting the various "characters mores and manners" of the English this humorous exploration of the highs and lows of London society is a close adaptation of Pierce Egan's enormously popular "Life in London." The present work though not a word-for-word translation closely follows Egan's original story of Tom Jerry and Logic a group of friends whose misadventures lead them from the most fashionable districts of London to its poorest slums. The wonderful illustrations show the trio taking part in all manner of mischief and merrymaking including attending a masked ball mingling in the crowded foyer of a theatre visiting a bespoke tailor taking boxing lessons carousing at a rowdy alehouse and perhaps inevitably having to appear before a constable. Though the plates are unsigned they appear to be faithful copies of those done by George and Robert Cruikshank for the original Egan work. Deriving its name from the use of design motifs taken from Gothic architecture the so-called "Cathedral Binding" or "Cathedral-Style Binding" was fashionable in England and France for about three decades beginning ca. 1810. French binder Joseph Thouvenin is sometimes credited with popularizing the style. The design is usually accomplished with either blocking or gilt tooling but sometimes both are employed in a pleasing mixture as seen here. Jules Didot l'aîné et Baudouin Frères unknown
