Gronow, a British officer, traveled widely in Europe over many years and provides some interesting comments on society, nobility, culture, the court of Napoleon III, the Duke of Wellington, Chateaubriand, Louis XVIII, Madame de Stael, fashionable society, etc.

Publisher's 3/4 red morocco over marbled boards spine lettered in gilt with marbled paper endpapers. Upper joint and edges of boards rubbed small split to upper joint at head of spine. Former owner's bookplate to front pastedown ticket from the Gotham Book Mart to rear. Page block somewhat toned mainly the protective papers else clean internally and very good. Heavy volume and elegantly produced being a review and analysis of the art exhibitions held in Paris in 1902. Finely printed plate facsimiles of paintings and sculptures exhibited make up most of the book. Text is in English being translated from the French by Paul Villars.
