March 13 1911. "My Dear Mrs. Gibbs: I thought it might interest you to see brought together the zoological papers that have been written by holders of the Virginia Barret Gibbs Scholarship since 1894. I trust you will accept the two volumes which I am sending with this as a slight token of appreciation of the aid which this scholarship has already afforded to students in Zoology. When I think of the years to come and the many more men who will be helped while devoting themselves to biological problems I am sure the grounds are ample for offering you as I do my hearty congratulations. Quite by chance I learned through Miss Clark that your birthday is near at hand so I am taking the liberty of making that day the date of this little remembrance. With high esteem and good wishes I am as ever Sincerely E.L. Mark." THEODORE K. Limited edition of 20 copies of Christmas Day Bucks Pond Road — a signed first printing of the book including a signed and numbered print pictured here. Images: https://www.photoeye.com/bookstore/citation/ZJ012 . "In Christmas Day Bucks Pond Road his second book with The Ice Plant Brooklyn-based photographer Tim Carpenter born 1968 revisits the Central Illinois topography of his first monograph Local Objects with a sequence of 56 black-and-white medium-format photographs all made on a single winter morning. In Local Objects he meandered this semi-rural Midwestern landscape through changing seasons in an abstract sequence but here Carpenter follows a straightforward path literally taking the viewer on a two-hour walk from point A to point B. Nothing much happens along this brief narrative arc—there are fallow fields standing water dormant trees the occasional tire track on worn pavement—yet Carpenter explores the stillness of this outdoor space with a palpable almost erotic anticipation revealing intimate subtleties as the journey unfolds. Made with an intensity of attention and a lightness of touch the photographs in Christmas Day Bucks Pond Road are less about the confines of this specific time and place than about a poetic strategy for narrowing the distance between human desire and the factual content of the everyday world." -Publisher's notes. 2004ref. Alibris.0018158Mon Decor Gallery. 2004. Hard cover. Very good in very good dust jacket. 60 p. Includes: illustrations index. . Renato Cristiano: A Journey Through Painting documents the life and art of a remarkable Italian artist who first achieved great success in the 1950s as an acclaimed abstract artist whose work is included in the collection of numerous Western institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. 1955 marked the year of Cristiano's arrival in Bali after a circuitous journey through the Far East in search of adventure and inspiration. There he became acquainted with and grew to be part of the lively expatriate artist community during a time of great political and social change in Indonesia. Among one of his first patrons was President Sukarno whose keen eye for art drew him to Cristiano and led to his personal acquaintance with the Italian artist. Like many expatriate artists before him Cristiano's life and work is inextricably interwoven with the Island of the Gods especially after his marriage to his Balinese wife Wayan Nesa. Cristiano is currently recognised as one of the most talented artists working in Bali after World War II and this book is not only a stunning visual retrospective of more than a half-century of work but also the intriguing tale about an individual of great artistic insight and perception. Author Bruce W. Carpenter an expert on the stories and personalities of the place and era strives to open new vistas in this book on a seminal figure in Balinese expatriate art. It is a detailed yet practical text of human muscle pathology that not only describes but extensively and beautifully illustrates human myopathology. The book provides a unified and consistent clinicopathological viewpoint in each section. The color illustrations of muscle histochemical reactions prove once again that a muscle biopsy can be a thing of beauty.
