2023ref. 2342694New York: William Morrow 2023. Revised and Expanded Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 5x1x8. New. Revised and expanded edition. An exceptional copy. 2023 Hard Cover. xii 708 pp. The comprehensive collection of letters spanning the adult life of one of the world's greatest storytellers now revised and expanded to include more than 150 previously unseen letters with revealing new insights into The Hobbit The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. J.R.R. Tolkien creator of the languages and history of Middle-earth as recorded in The Hobbit The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion was one of the most prolific letter-writers of the last century. Over the years he wrote a mass of letters - to his publishers to members of his family to friends and to "fans" of his books - which often reveal the inner workings of his mind and which record the history of composition of his works and his reaction to subsequent events. A selection from Tolkien's correspondence collected and edited by Tolkien's official biographer Humphrey Carpenter and assisted by Christopher Tolkien was published in 1981. It presented in Tolkien's own words a highly detailed portrait of the man in his many aspects: storyteller scholar Catholic parent friend and observer of the world around him. In this revised and expanded edition of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien it has been possible to go back to the editors' original typescripts and notes restoring more than 150 letters that were excised purely to achieve what was then deemed a "publishable length" and present the book as originally intended. Enthusiasts for his writings will find much that is new for the letters not only include fresh information about Middle-earth such as Tolkien's own plot summary of the entirety of The Lord of the Rings and a vision for publishing his "Tales of the Three Ages" but also many insights into the man and his world. In addition this new selection will entertain anyone who appreciates the art of letter-writing of which J.R.R. Tolkien was a master. William Morrow hardcover books

Images: https://www.photoeye.com/bookstore/citation/ZJ012 . "In Christmas Day Bucks Pond Road his second book with The Ice Plant Brooklyn-based photographer Tim Carpenter born 1968 revisits the Central Illinois topography of his first monograph Local Objects with a sequence of 56 black-and-white medium-format photographs all made on a single winter morning. In Local Objects he meandered this semi-rural Midwestern landscape through changing seasons in an abstract sequence but here Carpenter follows a straightforward path literally taking the viewer on a two-hour walk from point A to point B. Nothing much happens along this brief narrative arc—there are fallow fields standing water dormant trees the occasional tire track on worn pavement—yet Carpenter explores the stillness of this outdoor space with a palpable almost erotic anticipation revealing intimate subtleties as the journey unfolds. Made with an intensity of attention and a lightness of touch the photographs in Christmas Day Bucks Pond Road are less about the confines of this specific time and place than about a poetic strategy for narrowing the distance between human desire and the factual content of the everyday world." -Publisher's notes. "Borrowing its title from the Wallace Stevens poem in which 'little existed for him but the few things / for which a fresh name always occurred' Tim Carpenter's Local Objects is a solid yet remarkably unassuming body of work: a calm steady rhythm of 74 medium format photographs made in the semi-rural American Midwest. While each picture meticulously frames the seemingly random non-activity of a typical 'street view' image Carpenter's contemplative sequencing allows a surprising harmony of natural and geometric motifs to modulate quietly throughout the book — an interplay of minor chords that draw the viewer into this specific physical place mostly central Illinois where he grew up and the subjective literary space of the work. Detached from the urgency of current affairs stripped of all excess Carpenter's photographs reflect a poetic attempt to see 'the thing in itself' to make meaning with the barest tools possible." — Publisher's note. Tim Carpenter a photographer and writer of growing acclaim is based in Brooklyn and central Illinois. He received his MFA in Photography from Hartford Art School in 2012 and has studied with Alec Soth Ron Jude Mark Steinmetz and Doug Dubois.
