"Borrowing its title from the Wallace Stevens poem in which 'little existed for him but the few things / for which a fresh name always occurred' Tim Carpenter's Local Objects is a solid yet remarkably unassuming body of work: a calm steady rhythm of 74 medium format photographs made in the semi-rural American Midwest. While each picture meticulously frames the seemingly random non-activity of a typical 'street view' image Carpenter's contemplative sequencing allows a surprising harmony of natural and geometric motifs to modulate quietly throughout the book — an interplay of minor chords that draw the viewer into this specific physical place mostly central Illinois where he grew up and the subjective literary space of the work. Detached from the urgency of current affairs stripped of all excess Carpenter's photographs reflect a poetic attempt to see 'the thing in itself' to make meaning with the barest tools possible." — Publisher's note. Tim Carpenter a photographer and writer of growing acclaim is based in Brooklyn and central Illinois. He received his MFA in Photography from Hartford Art School in 2012 and has studied with Alec Soth Ron Jude Mark Steinmetz and Doug Dubois. He is a co-founder of the independent photobook imprint TIS Books. USA customers please note: We only ship our books via USPS Media Mail with insurance & tracking. 1926rif. 116In original tan printed wrappers pp. 201-245 4 black and white photographic plates and very large folding color soil survey map of the Las Vegas area at rear. The map based on U. S. Geological Survey topographic coverage shows cultural details individual buildings roads railroads etc. in addition to soil types and distribution within the region necessary for delineating important and desirable agricultural areas. Descriptions and characteristics of soil classifications shown on the map are provided in the report together with information about principal and lesser crops grown at the time of the survey. An early edition and possibly the first soil survey of the Las Vegas area. Later soil surveys provide more maps and finer details but lack the visual appeal simplicity and historical content of this earlier large color map. According to the text the population of Las Vegas was 2304 at the time! Condition: Complete as issued. Ex-library with ink stamp and call numbers on front wrapper; internally clean. Removed from bound volume with roughness and chipping to wrappers along the bound edge loose or detaching pages and stitch holes along the left margin not affecting the map. The map has a couple of short opening tears with tender fold lines and is bright and clean. Government Printing Office paperback
