2021Best.-Nr. BIBHB0089733642021. Hardcover. New. About The Book -: This volume is an attempt to present to the English render a general view of the phases of Theism in Medieval India. The term is understood in its widest aspect for even the philosophic pantheism of the Vedanta admitted a relative reality to the Theistic interpretation of the world and man. The labours of the great Sanskrit scholars of the last century were largely devoted to the varied products embraced under lie comprehensive term Veda and the later aspects of the higher religions of Hinduism after the formulation of its great schools of philosophy received less attention. But the learning and industry of the last thirty years in England on the Continent and among distinguished Indian scholars have rendered a large amount of material accessible to the modern student unequipped with knowledge of the vernacular languages or with first-hand familiarity with modern conditions. The close of the reign of Akbar the contemporary of Queen Elizabeth sees the failure of his attempt to establish an Imperial Monotheism which should transcend both Islam and the ancient native faiths while it finds Hinduism provided with its greatest religious poem the Ramayana of Tulsi Das and the community of the Sikhs passing into a small but vigorous church-nation. About The Author -: Joseph Estlin Carpenter 1844 1927 was an English Unitarian minister the principal of Manchester College Oxford. He was an expert in Sanskrit and a pioneer in the study of comparative religion. Carpenter was born in Ripley Surrey. He was the second son of William Benjamin Carpenter. He was described in the Encyclopedia Americana as an important ""Sanskrit scholar and Biblical critic"". He was Professor of ecclesiastical history at Manchester College Oxford. He wrote a biography of his aunt Mary Carpenter the prolific social reformer and educationalist. In his book The Historical Jesus and the Theological Christ 1911 he defended the historicity of Jesus and criticized the claims of Christ myth theory proponents such as Arthur Drews. 1970Best.-Nr. 87512New York: Outerbridge & Dienstfrey / Ballantine 1970. First Edition. First printing. Small quarto 21cm x 23cm; gray paper-covered boards hardcover; dustjacket; 157pp unpaginated; illus. Fine in the fragile printed mylar dustwrapper complete but slightly rubbed and scratched; Very Good. Somewhat uncommon cloth edition of this experimental pastiche of Carpenter's aphoristic writings and Heyman's documentary photographs. Heyman b. 1930 is perhaps best known as Margaret Mead's long-time collaborator and co-author with her of the books Family and World Enough. Carpenter was a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology and a frequent collaborator with Marshall McLuhan to whose work the current volume clearly owes a debt. An easy book to find in softcover but the cloth edition is elusive especially in the absurdly fragile mylar dustwrapper. Outerbridge & Dienstfrey / Ballantine unknown
