Original printed softcovers minor chipping head & foot of spine slight chipping couple lower corners dustsoiling still a VG bright copy. First edition of one of the earliest American studies on Chinese Sugarcane Sorghum and the possibilities that this was the sorghum plant that American farmers hoped would grow in the Northern United States and definitive work on growing harvesting and distilling sorghum. A variety of “Chinese Sugarcane” was imported by Father Du Halde from Sichuan China in 1851 where it was quickly adopted also under the name of “Northern Chinese or Shanghai Sugarcane” as a crop to provide sugars for alcoholic products filling the void left by the grape crop failure in the 1850s. Chinese Sugarcane seeds were first brought into United States by Jay Browne Esq. in 1854 and a few intrepid American nurseries began planting and determining if it could be planted and harvested profitably in the North. Hyde writes that in his test crop he was able to secure a dark sugar from the cane molasses and notes that it will be of tremendous value in producing alcohol and confectionaries and that the Sorghum remnants could be fed to livestock. Hyde 1825-1898 worked with his father James Hyde in developing the very successful nursery emphasizing fruit trees ornamental trees and cash crops. He was a pioneering environmentalist who founded the first improvement society in the United States the Newton Centre Tree Club whose purpose was to emphasize beautifying the roads and commons in Massachusetts. He was Newton MA first mayor after the city was incorporated in 1873 and was also successful in persuading the Boston & Albany RR to acquire the existing single-track line of the Charles River Railroad to aid his nursery business. First and only edition, [2], 30pp., stitched as issued in blue paper wrappers, a very good copy. The author argues against putting an additional duty on sugar "which... would be a great hardship on the sugar-planter in the West Indies, and very little benefit to the revenue...". He sets out all the costs involved in producing sugar, such as the price of slaves and the cost of keeping them, the higher freight costs, insurance, cost of animals and contributions to the defence force. Finally, he states the advantages of the sugar trade for Britain and shows how an additional duty would be to the detriment of the trade. 1850ref. BK0112Natchitoches and New Orleans Louisiana 1850. Autograph letter signed by Michael Boyce to R. P. Gaillard Natchitoches October 25 1850 with a subsequent letter in French from Jules Gaillard to his father New Orleans November 7 1850 written on the same sheet. 9 ¾ x 8 inches. Three written pages on a single folded sheet. Old folds scattered staining and wear some losses and tears along edges affecting portions of text slight dampstaining at margins but generally legible good to very good overall. Two letters offering a look into the contrast between the legal status of free people of color and the lives of enslaved people in antebellum Louisiana. Writing from Natchitoches Michael Boyce reports to R. P. Gaillard on financial and succession matters including the deeply indebted estate of a deceased man who had served as tutor essentially a guardian to a free Black minor. Boyce explains that the succession was being administered "at the instance of a free Boy of color whose Tutor the dec'd became in 1835; or thereabouts." The deceased tutor had apparently dissipated money belonging to his ward leaving the boy with a claim against the estate. Boyce himself a judgment creditor recognizes that his own prospects for recovery are poor: "the free Boy of color whose Tutor he was must be paid first and there are a prodigious other judgments before mine so that I will never get anything. Indeed the Succession will not pay the sum he spent of the free Boy while Tutor he was." A tutor charged with administering a minor's property was accountable to his ward with the minor enjoying legal protections against the tutor's estate. Boyce recognizes the free boy's claim as taking precedence over those of numerous other creditors. On the same sheet Jules Gaillard writes from New Orleans to his father less than two weeks later. His French-language letter begins with news of the family's sugar crop-"les cannes continuent à rendre selon tes désirs" with Gaillard hoping for rain so that plantation operations can continue-and proceeds through family illnesses and travel plans before recording the death of an enslaved woman: "Ma tante Mme Gaillard a perdue sa mulâtresse Mélité du choléra. Il y a huit jours." The brief notice preserves both the name and approximate date and cause of death of Mélité an enslaved mixed-race woman in the Gaillard household who died during one of the recurrent cholera epidemics that devastated New Orleans and southern Louisiana at the midcentury. Boyce was a substantial enslaver-a history of Natchitoches Parish lists him as owning 84 enslaved people in 18621-making his discussion of the free Black ward's legally privileged claim especially illustrative of the complicated coexistence of enslavement free Black property ownership and Louisiana civil law. An interesting piece of antebellum Louisiana correspondence documenting free Black property rights enslavement sugar cultivation and the human toll of the 1850 cholera epidemic. 1 Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northwest Louisiana The Southern Publishing Company 1890 297. . unknown books

1870ref. 0012289Cuba Sugar Plantation Havana. Good with no dust jacket. 1870. Non-Book. On offer is a manuscript Cuban accounting document datable to the 1870s recording the final settlement of two individuals securing their freedom through the coartación system. The transaction is explicitly tied to the dotación the enslaved workforce of the Ingenio Arcadia sugar mill. The document details the liquidation of two pagarés vencidos overdue promissory notes issued in favor of Juan de Dios and Estela concluding in a total of $1314.00. The text explicitly states the payment is made "para su completa libertad" "for their full liberty". The account is executed and signed by Antonio Perilla the responsible party settling the balance. Juan de Dios is identified as "Coartado en $311.74" placing him within the formal Cuban legal structure where an enslaved individual's value was fixed and repaid in installments. The document preserves the full financial mechanics of this system including principal interest and a 3% government-referenced valuation clause "al tipo que marca el Gobierno". At the foot of the document the accounting shifts from simple debt liquidation to a raw comparative valuation of human bodies. A manuscript note justifies the assigned price of the mulata Estela recorded at $600.00 by comparing her to another woman Saturnina: "La mulata Saturnina. Fue tasada en $800. Un año más de edad. Mucho más robusta. Hija de una negra Gunche y general de campo."Translation: "The mulatto Saturnina. Was valued at $800. A year older. Much more robust. Daughter of a black woman Gunche and field general.". The writer justifies the lower "price point" for Estela by citing Saturnina's physical comparative "robustness" and her maternal lineage. Saturina's mother is identified as a "negra Gunche" an ethnographic marker who held the rank of "general de campo" field overseer suggesting that her status and perceived physical strength were factors in her daughter's "market value". This document belongs to the post-Moret Law 1870 transitional period capturing the moment at which enslaved individuals moved through legally defined stages: valued indebted and ultimately freed. All this occurring while the plantation's financial systems for weighing and pricing human life remained fully intact. ConditionSingle manuscript sheet on ruled accounting paper. Moderate toning fold lines and scattered staining consistent with age and use. Ink remains strong and fully legible throughout.; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author .
