Considered one of the greatest boxers of all time Sugar Ray Robinson held the world welterweight title from 1946 to 1951 and by 1958 he had become the first boxer to win a divisional world championship five times. In a career that spanned 25 years Robinson amassed 175 wins 110 knockouts and just 19 losses. Robinson's ability to cross weight classes caused boxing fans and writers to dub him "pound for pound the best" a sentiment that has not faded over the years. Muhammad Ali liked to call Robinson "the king the master my idol." Robinson inspired Ali's famous matador style which he used to defeat Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title in 1964. In 1984 The Ring magazine placed Robinson No. 1 in its book "The 100 Greatest Boxers of All Time." Robinson finally retired from the sport for good in 1965. Two years later he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The first edition is now very rare in hardcover. Viking hardcover

First Edition, [ii],46pp., title and last leaf a little dusty, disbound. "The quality of sugar formed no just basis for taxation. Such a system was inexpedient because it would encourage the production of low-grade product, particularly in the newly conquered colonies which were capable of supplying an almost unlimited quantity of the superior article. It would be impossible to grade sugars properly into the several classes according to which they would be taxed in the proposal under consideration. There would be much fraud to secure the benefit of low rates. Completely side-steps the great fact that it was not equitable to exact the same duty as formerly when sugar had declined to one-third of its one-time value."?Ragatz, p.281. 1935xiv, 308 pages. "Blackbirding was full of horrors, of brutalities, of tragedies as was the African slave-trade - and fuller of romance, of heroism, and of self-sacrifice. It was not on such a great scale as the negro slave-trade, nor did it last so long, yet the Queensland slave-trade, which almost depopulated whole islands in the New Hebrides and in the Solomons, was only part of the Pacific slave-trade which may be included under the general term of blackbirding." - from Preface. Author's surname pencilled atop front free endpaper, presumably not by him. Moderate foxing to edges and prelims. Spine slant. Binding intact. Average wear. A worthy reference copy of this important reference. Book
