1961réf. 88706Chicago IL: Quadrangle Books 1961. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Very good/Good. Wayne H. Gallagher. v 3 194 4 pages. Glossary. Illustrations. Tabular data. Appendix. Index. The dust jacket has some wear small tears and soiling. This is a myth-shattering guide to bomb survival which offers new hope for millions of Americans. It breaks the hypnotic spell of mass figures bloated into death and destruction. It firmly contradicts the "certain death" psychology advocated by well-meaning but mistaken spreaders of despair and futility. More specifically this book is a manual for life. Author Mel Mawrence was Chief of Informational Services Illinois Civil Defense Office. John Clark Kimball was a former foreign correspondent Air Intelligence Officer USNR. This work includes scientific details; list of supplies; air burst charts; bomb shelter manufacturers and suppliers circa 1960. This book was a timely contribution during a period of intense public discussion of and governmental and personal investment in civil defense against a nuclear attack. Some of the content on fallout shelters was derived from the British experience of the construction of protection spaces during the German bombing campaign of WWII frequently referred to as "The Blitz". This book by Colonel Mel Mawrence with John Clark Kimball is a well-written primer of survival in the event of nuclear attack. The authors predict that even in a-well-managed unsuspected attack "the great majority of Americans probably will have a warning of at least hours." The authors emphasize that by proper preparation this country could hold the death rate to "between one and eleven per cent of the population." They urge that such preparation be commenced immediately both on a national and an individual basis; they chide those who in their eagerness to avoid hard responsibility grasp at any excuse even to the "siren song of certain death." 2015réf. 386689NY: Feral House 2015. 1st. Softcover. Very Good/None. Softcover. 224 pages. The book Horizontal Collaboration encompasses the Jazz Age Depression World War and Occupation and Liberation. It concludes with the shuttering of the licensed brothels in 1946 which some Parisian intellectuals thought was the final "destruction of French civilization". The term "Horizontal Collaboration" refers to the sexual liaisons between French civilians and German occupiers from 1940 to 1944. These were extremely widespread and included both individual wartime relationships in addition to prostitution. As Allied armies swept across the French countryside thousands of young womenand some menwere savagely punished by the authorities or by vigilante crowds becoming a source of deep national shame. Author Gordon redefines the pejorative term to mean something much broader: French men and women "horizontally collaborated" to overcome all social obstacles divisions and regulations. These obstacles include married and unmarried couples straights and homosexuals foreigners and locals gun-toting soldiers and their vanquished subjects. The natural yearning for sexual pleasure equally corrupted all cohabitating partners. Clean copy in publisher's shrinkwrap. Record # 386689 Feral House paperback
