Édition originale. Envoi signé : « Monsieur Max-Pol Fouchet Dali 1963 ». .

The Renaissance sculptor and master goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini is known as much for his Autobiography as for his art. Self-aggrandizing and partly invented the memoir is a well-written and highly entertaining addition to the Western canon. Both Cellini's artwork and his posthumously published autobiography influenced the Surrealist artist Salvador Dali who more than matched the Renaissance man in bravado famously writing in his own autobiography: "Every morning upon awakening I experience supreme pleasure: that of being Salvador Dali and I ask myself wonderstruck what prodigious thing will he do today this Salvador Dali. About very good; light wear and soil to wrappers; text evenly toned due to stock. Rare first and only edition of Salvador Dalí's illustrations for this communist publication by Jaume Miravitlles chairman of the Communist Workers' and Peasants' Bloc BOC. After being threatened with a prison sentence for distributing leaflets he fled to Paris where he completed his studies and began to move in the circle of the Surrealists. Together with Dalí he appeared as an actor in Luis Buñuel's film "Un perro andaluz" in which he played a clergyman sitting at the piano alongside his eccentric countryman. He also had a role in "La edad de oro". After his return he joined the Catalan Communist Party. During the Civil War he served as a propaganda officer for the Generalitat de Catalunya. 1968rif. 7978New York: Harry N. Abrams 1968. Later printing . Hardcover. Good /Very good. Quarto 243pp. illustrated. Harry N. Abrams did not state first or later printings during this period but we presume this is a later printing as the Abrams logo on the front panel appears to be that of ca. 1970-74. A slightly shaken copy good or better with general scuffing to the edges especially the corners. Still a crisp sound copy. In a very good dust jacket showing mild edgewear and some scrapes/abrasions to the rear panel which is typical for this title. Nevertheless a fantastic copy SIGNED boldly in purple ink by Dali and dated 1976 on the blank leaf opposite the title page. Signed copies of this excellent volume are rather uncommon compared to some of other of Dali's books. Harry N. Abrams hardcover
