Hardcover in illustrated slipcase. Black paper boards in illustrated jacket. 2 volumes 780 pages : illustrations some color ; 32 cm. Painter sculptor writer and filmmaker Salvador Dalí 1904-1989 was one of the century's greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics-and was rewarded with fierce controversy wherever he went. He was one of the first to apply the insights of Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis to the art of painting approaching the subconscious with extraordinary sensitivity and imagination. This lively monograph presents the infamous Surrealist in full color and in his own words. His provocative imagery is all here from the soft watches to the notorious burning giraffe. A friend of the artist for over thirty years privy to the reality behind Dalí's public image author Robert Descharnes is uniquely qualified to analyze Dalí-both the man and the myth. From jacket: As was to be expected Dali’s first venture as a novelist has produced a highly original disconcerting and fascinating masterpiece that has the passion intensity and brilliant color that characterize his paintings. Through a small number of characters who with their private passions are caught up in the maelstrom of history the author evokes a decadent European society as it sinks into vice sterility and irresponsibility and becomes engulfed in the catastophe of war.Love is the central theme and it is played with several varieations one or two of which are the strangest to be found in literature since the writings of Marquis de Sade. War politics friendship loyalty love of the land heroism are among the subsidiary themes which the author develops in his own original way. The Dial Press, 1944. First Edition. hardcover books

Les diners de Gala is uniquely devoted to the pleasures of taste. If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment close this book at once; it is too lively too aggressive and far too impertinent for you. - Salvador Dali Food and surrealism make perfect bedfellows: sex and lobsters collage and cannibalism the meeting of a swan and a toothbrush on a pastry case. The opulent dinner parties thrown by Salvador Dali 1904-1989 and his wife and muse Gala 1894-1982 were the stuff of legend. Luckily for us Dali published a cookbook in 1973 Les diners de Gala which reveals some of the sensual imaginative and exotic elements that made up their notorious gatherings. This reprint features all 136 recipes over 12 chapters specially illustrated by Dali and organized by meal courses including aphrodisiacs. The illustrations and recipes are accompanied by Dali's extravagant musings on subjects such as dinner conversation: 'The jaw is our best tool to grasp philosophical knowledge.' All these rich recipes can be cooked at home although some will require practiced skill and a well-stocked pantry. This is cuisine of the old school with meals by leading French chefs from such stellar Paris restaurants as Lasserre La Tour d'Argent Maxim's and Le Train Bleu. Taschen hardcover books
