1930réf. 2476Paris: Éditions Surréalistes 1930. First edition. 72 pp. Original aluminum foil paper wrappers covered by red tissue paper title printed in black on the cover. Unbound sheets as this variant was issued. Photo-lithographed portrait of Gala heliogravure frontispiece retouched with a burin and six heliographic plates. A bit of wear to the extremities else a beautiful copy of a very fragile production. Of an edition of 204 copies one of the very few on Rodingold vellum in sheets justified on the colophon by the Service de Presse stamp. With Dalí’s autograph dedication on the half-title “Hommage de l’auteur. Salvador Dali.” Laid in is the prière d’insérer announcement with text by André Breton and Paul Eluard. This issue of La Femme Visible is unbound sheets laid into the foil and red wrappers. For these few copies Dali apparently often added a simple autograph homage. The book did not meet with great success as Eluard reveals in a letter to Gala on January 27 1931: “La Femme visible a une presse immonde. Pourquoi Dali n’a-t-il pas mis dans ses dédicaces le nom des gens. Comme cela on n’en parlera pas ou en mal.” La Femme Visible is receiving dreadful publicity. Why didn’t Dali put people’s names in his dedications That way people won’t talk about it or talk about it badly. Georges Sebbag in his bibliography of Editions Surréalistes does not mention these press copies nor the printing of the book in sheets. One of Dalí’s earliest books containing four texts: “L’Âne Pourri” “La Chèvre Sanitaire” “L’Amour” and “Le Grand Masturbateur.” In these writings inspired by Freudian and post-Freudian theories Dalí’s aim is to upset the frontiers between dream and reality and to break down the convictions that form the basis of so-called “bourgeois values.” He later spoke of it as “a spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based on the critical and systematic objectification of delirious associations and delirious interpretations.” References: Michler and Löpsinger. The Catalan painter has added an exquisite corpse which he calls "descriptive poem" which to our knowledge remained unpublished to this day. Dalí titled the poem "imperceptible outbreak of nutrition" he writes as usual in phonetic French: " ge pique ta nuque ge coupe ton pique ge nuque ta coupe ge vide mon mal J'avale ta male … " 1935 is a turning point in the creation process for the Catalan master. Dalí found the surrealist works too limited the impossibility of going further in the exploration of this world led him to proceed to a work of introspection leading to paranoia. He worked on this aspect of himself and studied the behavior of the mentally ill especially people with paranoid tendencies. It will result from this research a method to open one's mind to the things of the invisible of the unconscious through the use of the paranoid character present in each of us; it is called the Paranoia-Critical Method or M.P.C. In painting this will result in the double or even multiple image to which he will remain attached for most of his life. Illustrated with 15 original photographic prints of the mannequins photographed by Man Ray at the 1938 International Exhibition of Surrealism. The mannequins had been transformed by Man Ray himself Salvador Dalí Oscar Dominguez Marcel Duchamp Max Ernst Espinoza Maurice Henry Marcel Jean Léo Malet André Masson Sonia Mossé Joan Miró Wolfgang Paalen Kurt Seligmann and Yves Tanguy. They were presented within a Surrealist staging by Marcel Duchamp and lighting designed by Man Ray himself. During the 1930s the European Surrealists had a fetishistic interest in simulated woman-female mannequins that they transformed into playful sculptural works of art. In 1938 Man Ray photographed a series of their work at the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme presented in the unsettling half-light of the Galerie des Beaux-Arts on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Visitors walking down a corridor on the Rue Surréaliste saw a series of dressmakers mannequins inhabitants of a dreamlike Paris scantily clad or adorned with a jumble of incongruous objects and flanked by street signs bearing highly symbolic names: some real such as the Rue des Vieilles Lanternes where Gérard de Nerval took his own life or the Rue Vivienne where Lautréamont once lived alongside invented ones such as the Rue aux Lèvres the Rue de Tous-les-Diables and the Rue de la Transfusion-de-Sang. The installations of this first international Parisian Surrealist exhibition organised by André Breton and Éluard marked a decisive moment in the history of the movement. For the first time the event dispensed with a straightforward retrospective of individual artists in favour of a series of phantasmagorical stagings live performances and ephemeral artworks prefiguring the modern concepts of installation and happening. Nearly 3000 visitors are said to have thronged to this 1938 Paris exhibition by the light of electric torches: One has the feeling of leaning over certain exhumed walls and of being the first to decipher their signs. Jean Fraysse Le Figaro littéraire 29 January 1938. From Hausmanns sculpture and de Chiricos paintings to the works of Hans Bellmer the mannequin had long occupied a central place in the Dada and Surrealist artistic vocabulary and was cited in Bretons 1924 Manifeste. These woman-objects staged in the spirit of the Musée Grévin offered infinite possibilities for the transformation of the body and the exploration of the unconscious. Some have remained enduringly celebrated such as Le Bâillon vert à bouche de pensée André Massons mannequin enclosed in a birdcage or Duchamps considered the only three-dimensional version of his alter ego Rrose Sélavy taking the form of a man cross-dressed as a woman in the style of Claude Cahun. The mannequin of lesbian artist Sonia Mossé friend of Artaud and photographed by Man Ray with Nusch is her only known artwork and the sole mannequin in the installation created by a woman artist. Man Ray had incorporated Jean Petithory hardcover

Biblia Sacra is the largest and most ambitious of Dali's picture cycles. The series was commissioned by his close friend Guiseppe Albaretto. A devout Roman Catholic Albaretto hoped that the project and the close reading of the Bible it necessitated might strengthen Dali's own faith. Dalí took a tremendous amount of care with the project personally inspecting and ensuring the quality of the reproductions of the 105 paintings. Albert Field noted that when the original paintings were displayed alongside the prints "the prints are so like the originals that the only sure way to distinguish one from the other was that the paint on the originals made the surface uneven" p. 201. An extraordinary feat of printmaking presented in suitably beautiful fine bindings this is Dalí at his best. 5 vols folio. With 105 full-page offset lithographs on card after gouaches by Dalí.
