1967réf. 193881Milan: Rizzoli 1967. The magni luxus edition of 105 Dalí lithographs First edition signed by the publisher number XXXV from the deluxe magni luxus edition of 199 numbered I to CXCIX. Biblia Sacra is the largest and most ambitious of Dali's picture cycles. The series was commissioned by his close friend Guiseppe Albaretto. A devout Roman Catholic Albaretto hoped that the project and the close reading of the Bible it necessitated might strengthen Dali's own faith. Dalí took a tremendous amount of care with the project personally inspecting and ensuring the quality of the reproductions of the 105 paintings. Albert Field noted that when the original paintings were displayed alongside the prints "the prints are so like the originals that the only sure way to distinguish one from the other was that the paint on the originals made the surface uneven" p. 201. An extraordinary feat of printmaking presented in suitably beautiful fine bindings this is Dalí at his best. 5 vols folio. With 105 full-page offset lithographs on card after gouaches by Dalí. Text in Latin. Original dark green crushed morocco raised bands spines lettered in gilt with coloured morocco inlays outlined with gilt pale green moiré endpapers top edges gilt others untrimmed text printed on heavy laid paper with Dalí watermark. With original green moiré and morocco slipcases. Spines faded internally bright and clean; slipcases unevenly sunned edges lightly rubbed: a very good set. Drypoint and etching on heliogravures in colours on Rives paper 1977 signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 200 there were also 20 artist's proofs printed by Ateliers Rigal Paris published by Berggreuen Editions Paris sheet: 44.5 x 31 cm. 17½ x 12¼ in. This work is from the suite of 80 etchings by Salvador Dali based on Francisco Goya's 18th century series Los Caprichos. Goya's series served as a satirical commentary on Spanish society at the end of the 18th century particularly targeting the nobility and clergy as well as superstitions and irrationality prevalent at the time. In 1977 Dali reproduced the series as heliogravures subsequently reworking each of the plates with Surrealist drypoint additions and stencil colouring. 'Goya was preoccupied with dreams dreamlike states and nightmares - the varying states of consciousness that allowed him to explore allusive subjects. The Caprichos provide the earliest concentrated evidence of Goya's interest in dreams."Truth to life" is the essence of what Goya achieved through his graphic work. His prints and drawings quietly observe confront dissect and reflect the many facets of what it means to be human. This truth to life has fueled the works' relevance over the course of two centuries as they continue to provoke audiences to engage with Goya's profound insights'. Salvador Dali began work on his tarot cards in the early 1970's when he was approached by Albert Broccoli to create a custom deck of tarot as a prop for the James Bond film 'Live and Let Die' 1973. The prop contract fell through due to Broccoli not wanting to meet Dali's fee but his wife Gala who was interested in mysticism encouraged the artist to continue the project. Over the following decade Dali created an entirely new deck which he described as a 'Universal Tarot' featuring himself as the Magician and his wife Gala as the Empress. In 1984 a limited edition set of cards was printed by Naipes Comas which quickly sold out. This first book publication by Rachel Pollack leading expert in modern Tarot and author of 'Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom' 1980 provides an explanatory guide to the imagery and symbolism in his cards. Issued in a 'deluxe' edition of just 125 copies from which this example is numbered 80 it is decidedly scarce in commerce.
