1933ref. 5493171933. Unbound. Fine. Broadside. Yellow quarto sheet printed recto only. Folded twice and with a very tiny stain else fine. A statement prepared by Salvador Dali before his arrival in New York in anticipation of his first solo exhibition at the Lucien Levy Gallery from November 21 to December 8 1933. The statement quotes fellow surrealist and later antagonist Andre Breton includes Dali's denial as to the meaning of his works: "I never have the slightest idea what my pictures mean"; how after painting his wife one autumn afternoon he was "finally able to attain images sufficiently lucid and 'appetizing' for exhibition in New York"; and ending with a final question; "New York: why why did you erect my statue long ago long before I was born higher than another more desperate than another" Confusion about this statement abounds with some claiming the broadside was distributed at the 1939 World's Fair where Dali had a pavilion or later in 1941 calling it a response to criticism from a statement by Breton. Our research - and Dali's own printed words "I have never been to America" - supports Dali biographer Ian Gibson's belief that this broadside was issued in late 1933 as advance publicity for the painter's first solo American exhibition close on the heels of increased interest in the artist following the Surrealist show the year before that debut his icon painting The Persistence of Memory. Rare. OCLC locates two copies and we have located at third the Queen's Public Library in New York. unknown

ref. FRE114A monochrome photogravure portrait reproduction on a single leaf signed in ink by Helena Rubinstein 1872–1965 beneath the image in the original grey folder bearing her name and the printed wording “City of Paris / Autograph Party . . . November 13 1951.” Image: 22.9 × 17.3 cm 9 × 6.8 in.; leaf: 35.1 × 27.9 cm 13.8 × 11 in.; folder: 40.6 × 29.2 cm 16 × 11.5 in. Folder slightly browned and with minor tears; portrait in near fine condition. An apparently unrecorded promotional souvenir reproducing Dalí’s portrait of his patron Helena Rubinstein issued for her autograph party at San Francisco’s City of Paris department store and bearing her autograph. Born into a Jewish family in Kraków Rubinstein began her cosmetics business in Australia before expanding to Europe and the United States. Her international success supported an extensive collection of modern art and African and Oceanic sculpture. Art also became part of the public presentation of her business and personality: this souvenir brings together the cosmetics entrepreneur her celebrated surrealist portrait and a personal appearance at a San Francisco department store. Rubinstein and Dalí had known one another since the early 1930s and she was among the patrons who welcomed him to New York following his wartime departure from Europe. In 1942 she commissioned three murals for the dining room of her Park Avenue apartment; the following year he painted the portrait reproduced here catalogued by the Dalí Foundation as Princess Artchil Gourielli or Portrait of Princess Gourielli Helena Rubinstein. Exhibited at Knoedler’s in 1943 it presents Rubinstein’s youthful face emerging from a monumental rocky coastal formation with necklaces encircling the stone beneath her head. The transformation of the sitter into landscape places this commissioned society portrait firmly within Dalí’s surrealist imagery. The signed reproduction documents the subsequent use of that portrait in Rubinstein’s publicity. Its dated folder ties the image to a particular San Francisco promotional event illustrating the intersection of modern art cosmetics advertising and the cultivation of a woman entrepreneur’s public identity.
