Hardcover. no dust jacket a well-worn book offered AS-IS as a reading/reference copy only; both hinges are broken although there are no loose or detached pages there's a one-time owner's possession statement written on the title page the spine cloth is faded the corners are bumped and worn the paper spine label is chipped and discolored -- must I go on. B&W drawings color plates "Dali does not suffer from those convenient lapses of memory so common to most authors when they are faced with the problem of writing about themselves. Dali has held nothing back. The result is a human documented uninhibited by false modesty or self-consciousness. The world has long wondered how Dali felt about the things he has done and why he has done them. Here is the answer an answer written in simple understandable prose. When you have finished the book perhaps you too will agree that in calling himself a genius Dali does not overstate the case." All quoted from the dust jacket on a different copy of the book once handled by us. Dali Overstate Heaven forbid! Here's a little context: at the time this book was published Dali was all of 38 years old; he died at 84 in 1989. Although I don't think his high opinion of himself had materially shifted in the interim. NOTE that the "color plates" specified include in this copy only a double-page spread in the front of the book and a single additonal color plate a full-page reproduction of a painting untitled; it's possible that other plates may be missing from this copy but as there is no reference list of illustrations I can't be sure. 1933réf. 5493171933. Unbound. Fine. Broadside. Yellow quarto sheet printed recto only. Folded twice and with a very tiny stain else fine. A statement prepared by Salvador Dali before his arrival in New York in anticipation of his first solo exhibition at the Lucien Levy Gallery from November 21 to December 8 1933. The statement quotes fellow surrealist and later antagonist Andre Breton includes Dali's denial as to the meaning of his works: "I never have the slightest idea what my pictures mean"; how after painting his wife one autumn afternoon he was "finally able to attain images sufficiently lucid and 'appetizing' for exhibition in New York"; and ending with a final question; "New York: why why did you erect my statue long ago long before I was born higher than another more desperate than another" Confusion about this statement abounds with some claiming the broadside was distributed at the 1939 World's Fair where Dali had a pavilion or later in 1941 calling it a response to criticism from a statement by Breton. Our research - and Dali's own printed words "I have never been to America" - supports Dali biographer Ian Gibson's belief that this broadside was issued in late 1933 as advance publicity for the painter's first solo American exhibition close on the heels of increased interest in the artist following the Surrealist show the year before that debut his icon painting The Persistence of Memory. 1996réf. 71711New York: Dover Publications Inc 1996. Paperback. Near Fine. 91 pp. Octavo 21.5 cm. Pictorial wraps. Barcode sticker from previous owner on back wrap. "Few escape the sting of Dali's criticism. Of Picasso he remarks "He went in for the ugly on purpose; he was going to finish off modern art at one blow.' Cezanne is judged 'one of the most marvelously reactionary painters of all time' while Turner is rated as 'without the slightest hesitation without a doubt the worst painter in the world.' These and many more acidic evaluations flow from Dali's pen in an unbroken stream of outrageous observations that are vicious and unfair but also funny and thought-provoking. They are accompanied by renderings of 15 of the paintings mentioned in the text along with 44 of Dali's calligraphic devices."- from back wrap. Dover Publications, Inc paperback books
