Some trivial rubbing to the wrappers else FINE--very clean and sharp; in original publisher's printed slipcase with color mounted plate showing some wear around the edges but still holding strong and sound; an uncommonly nice example of book quite prone to wear as a massive volume printed in wraps. One of Verve's most elaborate productions and the first double issue a thematic issue devoted to the human figure-- 'a volume of exceptional rechness.' George Braque honorary double issue Profusely illustrated with original lithographs created for this issue by Miro Bores Chagall Matisse and others. 1955rif. 510473Harcourt Brace and Company 1955. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. FINE/Very Good. First American Edition printed in Paris. Large 4to sewn binding in Braque's own lithographic paper-over-board covers. Unpaginated with 20 full-page color lithographs many of wich were original creations for the Verve issue. FINE copy exceedingly clean and sharp with crisp clean pages and tight square binding; DJ edges worn with some tears now wrapped in mylar. From the colophon: 'The illustrations in this volume are reproduced from the sketch-books - carnets de travail - which Georges BRAQUE has been keeping up for thirty years and more and which constitute a daily record of fragments of the visible world that have caught his attention and ideas for paintings that have occurred to him. In fact the only difference between these sketch-books and the diaries kept by so many writers is that here the entries are not written but take the form of gouache or watercolor sketches. Hitherto Braque has always refused to make public these albums which be takes with him wherever be goes and which comprise the bulk of his work as a draftsman. Now at long last be has authorized the reproduction of a number of pages of these albums selected by himself with our co-operation. This book whose cover has been specially designed by Braque himself constitutes a double number 31-32 of VERVE in the French edition. The American Edition is published by HARCOURT BRACE and Company New York. It has been reproduced under the direction of Teriade by the Master Printers DRAEGER Frères as for the heliogravures in colors and in black and by MOURLOT Frères for the lithography in colors. Printing was completed in Paris 1955 on the 20th day of September.'. Harcourt, Brace and Company hardcover
1937rif. 510540Verve 1937. First Edition. Paperback. FINE. Complete run of the first four issues of Teriade's legendary art magazine. Beginning with a stunning cover produced by Matisse for the first issue Verve would incorporate fresh artwork into its cover designed newly commissioned by artists such as Miro Picasso Chagall and other leading lights of the French art world. Each issue offered spectacular color lithographs printed by the Paris lithographers Mourlot. Early issues came in litho-printed card wrappers in boxes later volumes would be in paper-over board with litho covers. This choce allowed Teriade to feature the fresh lithographic artwork in the cover design but left the books themselves extremely fragile and succeptible to wear. Additionally the full-page lithographs have been continuous targets for art dealers looking to excise the plates. So condition seen here is quite rare with each volume preserved COMPLETE FINE with no signs of the wear and toning so commonly seen. 'The cover of Verve No. 1 is by Henri Matisse; it consists of three unmodulated colors--red blue and black--that the master cut directly from printers' ink specimen books. . Mattisse's cover for the first issue lithographed by Fernand Mourlot printers was an original work of art created expressly for the magazine--as would be practically all of the Verve's covers. . The painter took great pains to make sure that the cover would turn out exactly as he wished. . THe care Matisse lavished on what others might consider a minor undertaking was one of the hallmarks of Teriade's publications. How did he induce the greatest artists of this century to give the very best of themelves . Matisse and Teriade shared a common ideal. For both of them painting was life itself.' 1940rif. 510631Editions de la Revue Verve 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. FINE/NEAR FINE. First American Edition with tipped in 'Occupation of Paris' notice. Tall 4to 35.5cm. sewn binding in Henri Matisse-designed lighograph printed cover on black paper over cards often mistaken for the DJ itself with original brown kraft paper lithographed dust jacket. The dust jacket was often treated as a throwaway especially since it was taped over making it impossible to see the beautiful Matisse covers without tearing it; they are quite uncommonly seen. We have not attempted removing the dust jacket here though we have supplied a photograph from another copy showing the design. This is a unique opportunity to for a collector to have not only a copy of the book as issued with the jacket but a uniquely clean and fresh copy of the cover itself entombed within the protection of the jacket. The book itself is exceedingly clean and sharp. Illustrated throughout in color and black and white with contributions from Verve's usual suspects: Matisse Miro Picasso Rouault Braque and a spectacular center-fold lithograph by Pierre Bonnard. In spite of the statement in the 'Occupation notice that half the American edition was lost this is not a terribly scarce book -- perhaps because subscribers immediately recognized the significance of what it represented namely the destruction of the thriving modern art movement in France at the hands of the neo-classical obsessed Nazis. But the jacket and condition make this an uncommon survival. Editions de la Revue Verve hardcover

Peyré "Peinture et Poésie" p. 149; The Artist and the Book 1860-1960 37. Isolated faint marginal foxing slight crease to title page but a VERY FINE COPY clean fresh and bright internally in a pristine binding. Bound to a sculptural Art Deco design and elegantly illustrated and inscribed by a great 20th century artist this is a collection of five poems about "sapates"--valuable gifts hidden inside a gift of lesser value such as a diamond ring inside a cupcake. Our volume does not fall under this category: its outside is every bit as impressive as the contents. The celebrated French artist Georges Braque 1882-1963 was a painter collagist printmaker and sculptor who made important contributions to the Fauves movement in the early 20th century and to the development of Cubism in which he and Picasso were the leading lights. The illustrations here done near the end of his long career depict the five "sapates"--oil olives a jug a rough sketch of a fish a shutter--in simple black and white with more realism than his Cubist works but still in simple pared-down lines. To accompany the inscription of this volume to banker Max Pellequer d. 1974 nephew of Picasso's friend André Level Braque added a small painting of cerulean blue leaves a single note of color in the blacks whites and grays of the text and one picked up by binder François Brindeau who used that hue for the lettering on the covers. Brindeau studied at the École Estienne graduating in 1976 and then worked with Jean de Gonet. He created the present binding for bibliophile and former Olympic rowing medalist Maurice Houdayer 1931-2020 a connoisseur of contemporary bindings who had a great love of Art Deco. Houdayer served as president of the Amis de la Reliure Originale and assembled an impressive collection of illustrated books in bindings he commissioned from innovative designers. Montpellier-born poet Francis Ponge 1899-1988 was known as "the poet of things" because he wrote about simple everyday objects like the subjects of the present work. His poetry invites us to contemplate often overlooked commonplace objects and perhaps in doing so to discover something about the human psyche. Literary critic David Gascoyne noted that Ponge "addressed himself to the common reader in the hope of persuading us that poetry is not merely a preoccupation of the idle and overeducated.".
