2021réf. 202798Kobenhavn: Strandberg Publishing 2021. Hardcover. VG. A pale yellow matte hardcover book with the title printed in black down the spine. "The mystery and myths surrounding the artist Paul Gauguin 1848-1903 are alive and well. Hailed as one of early modernism's most significant figures but at the same time condemned for his work and his character. The book focuses on Gauguin's work and a legacy that remains ambiguous. The discussion about his art and person has not become less relevant at a time when #MeToo puts a new focus on Gauguin's relationship with underage girls and his part in colonialism in French Polynesia. Even so his paintings are still sold for astronomical sums and huge exhibitions characterize museums around the world Gauguin's status as a famous genius is undisputed. It is time to consider the champion and the monster as inseparable entities. With Flemming Friborg's fascinating book Gauguin's method and morality are seen as inextricably linked in a carefully nurtured personal brand. But modernity had great costs artistically and personally.". Strandberg Publishing hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 256 pages; 252 illus. -- with a bonus offer--; This major reevaluation of Paul Gauguin presents the artist and his work in an entirely new light. The vivid unnaturalistic colors and bold outlines of Gauguin's paintings and the strong semiabstract quality of his woodcuts had a profound effect on the development of twentieth-century art. Here readers will discover why Gauguin was one of the most important artists behind European modernism--yet one who also challenged its very tenets. Because while modern art largely rejected narrative for Gauguin it remained central. Gauguin is the first book to fully examine his use of stories and myth to give powerful narrative tension to his paintings at a time when other painters thought storytelling was dead. Gauguin's life in French Polynesia is often portrayed as a quest for the other with the artist as the romantic explorer encountering primitive cultures for the first time. In fact he was deeply immersed in world art and a great reader of Polynesian stories and myths. This book cuts through the mystique surrounding Gauguin--one the artist himself cultivated--to show how he self-mythologized presenting himself to the world as a suffering Christ-like figure. Stunningly illustrated and unprecedented in scope Gauguin features more than 200 museum-quality reproductions of paintings works on paper ceramics woodcarvings and writings including Gauguin's beautifully illustrated letters and books. The Barnes Foundation is an American educational art and horticultural institution with locations in Merion Pennsylvania a suburb of Philadelphia; and Logan Square Philadelphia. It was founded in 1922 by Albert C. Barnes a chemist who collected art after making a fortune by co-developing an early anti-gonorrhea drug marketed as Argyrol and selling his company at the right time before antibiotics came into use. Today the foundation owns more than 2500 objects including 800 paintings estimated to be worth about $25 billion. These are primarily works by Impressionist and Modernist masters but the collection includes many other paintings by leading European and American artists as well as ancient works from other cultures. In the 1990s the foundation's declining finances led its leaders to various controversial moves including sending artworks on world tours and proposing to move the collection to Philadelphia. A 2009 documentary The Art of the Steal argued that the foundation had been taken over by other non-profit institutions. After numerous court challenges the new Barnes building opened on Benjamin Franklin Parkway on May 19 2012. The foundation's current president and executive director Thomas Thom Collins was appointed on January 7 2015. Wikipedia paperback
