Con queste parole John Rewald introduce la biografia di Cézanne pubblicata in plurime edizioni nell'arco di quarant'anni (1948-1986) e rimasta insuperata, a detta unanime della comunità degli storici dell'arte. Uscita originariamente in Francia, e poi ampliata nella sua versione definitiva per il pubblico americano, quest'opera preziosa, che ha il pregio della sintesi e al contempo della completezza, colma finalmente una lacuna nel panorama editoriale italiano. Difficile pensare a una figura più rilevante di Cézanne per lo sviluppo della pittura moderna, ecco perché Rewald ha voluto ritrarre in queste pagine ogni sfaccettatura della sua travagliata personalità e il suo spirito ribelle e caparbio nel difficile rapporto con la cultura del tempo e con la critica ufficiale. Rewald descrive anche in dettaglio le teorie estetiche di Cézanne, l'amicizia con Zola, la sua personale battaglia contro l'ambiente borghese d'origine, il suo perenne senso di fallimento come uomo e come artista. Il lettore ripercorre così la vita del pittore - dall'adolescenza ai suoi ultimi giorni -mediante l'alternarsi della cifra intima e confidenziale al racconto della scena artistica francese di fine secolo; e grazie alla sapienza del biografo, quel racconto si arricchisce passo passo di un apparato iconografico che affianca i capolavori di Cézanne alle foto dei luoghi amati da un artista per il quale imprescindibile era la pittura rigorosamente dal vero. Come scrive Piergiorgio Dragone nel suo saggio finale dedicato alla figura del grande critico, «Rewald sembra condurre per mano il lettore nel flusso della vita artistica e delle dinamiche che racconta, in una maniera così piana, essenziale e vivida, che si ha la sensazione di assistere a quei fatti del passato come se ci si ritrovasse per le vie di Parigi e nei sobborghi: ascoltando idee e discussioni fra i pittori, vedendoli lavorare, si è partecipi dei loro entusiasmi e delle loro difficoltà».
