réf. 6849MARC CHAGALL 1887-1985. Marc Chagall born Moishe Shagal was a Russian and French artist of Jewish ancestry. He is known for his artwork that blends surrealism Fauvism and Cubism to depict Jewish folklore and memories of his youth in Vitebsk. He was described by Picasso as having an unparalleled understanding of color and for decades he had been said to be the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist. His most famous works include I and the Village Paris Through the Window and La Marie The Bride.Signed Program. February 11 1967. New Haven Connecticut. A program signed Marc Chagall 1967 for his lecture at Yale University. While Chagall is primarily known as a painter he had a connection to the theater world because of his theatrical designs. The year prior to this lecture he had completed the murals The Triumph of Music and The Sources of Music for the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. He also designed the sets and costumes for the Mets production of Mozart's The Magic Flute which premiered in February 1967 the same month as his Yale lecture. Given Chagalls contributions to stage design and his mastery of color theory the school invited him to speak about the intersection of fine art stagecraft and the power of color. Chagall usually resided in France this program being rare example of him sharing his artistic philosophy with an American academic audience. This program is under a reproduction of his painting I and the Village. The program is professionally framed and in very fine condition. unknown

Illustrated with black and white art reproduction photos. Text in German. With laid-in "Der Ewige Jude" The Wandering Jew exhibition postcard postmarked Bremen 1939. Near Fine with light edge wear and age toning; postcard evenly toned contemporary German stamps on the verso with 1939 postmark. In the aftermath of the confiscation of nearly 20000 art works from German museums Adolph Hitler's Ministry of Propaganda organized an exhibition of modern art in order to decry its racially impure deleterious character and supposed backing by Jewish interests in the Weimar era. The exposition was hosted at the Institute of Archaeology in the Hofgarten on July 19 1937 in Munich and later traveled throughout Germany. Organized by the Ministry of Propaganda leader Joseph Goebbels the show was designed to reinforce in the German public mind that subversive decadent or avant-garde art work would not be tolerated in the Third Reich. Attended by over two million visitors the show displayed over 650 confiscated paintings sculptures and prints by 112 artists primarily German including Georg Grosz Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Paul Klee Georg Kolbe Otto Dix Wassily Kandinsky Marc Chagall and many other now-acclaimed modern artists. Targeted artists were the subject of merciless ridicule and denounced with most works displayed unframed and obscured by painted slogans. Attended most famously by Museum of Non-Objective Painting predecessor to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum director Hilla R who supported affected artists like Vasily Kandinsky Rudolf Bauer and others by exhibiting their work in the United States. Many works were destroyed lost or re-homed overseas after the fall of the Third Reich. Laid-in is an antisemitic postcard for the third part of a series of Schandausstellungen or condemnation exhibitions "Der Ewige Jude" The Wandering Jew. The show opened on November 8 1937 to January 31 1938 in Berlin under Joseph Goebbels' direction. The exhibition traveled for the next year and a half attracting over 700000 visitors and concluding in March 1939 in Magdeburg. Verlag fur Kultur- und Wirtschaftswerbung unknown
1969réf. 4415Tudor Publising 1969. Hardback. Good. Drawings and Water Colors for The Ballet by Jacques Lassaigne & Marc Chagall Tudor Publishing ISBN: none Condition: Good Sold by Crappy Old Books This isn’t just a book—it’s a ticket to a stage where colors pirouette donkeys leap en pointe and fiddlers in improbable shades of green hover above the orchestra pit. In Drawings and Water Colors for The Ballet 1969 art critic Jacques Lassaigne plays master of ceremonies while Marc Chagall unleashes his arsenal of soaring dancers dream-flecked costumes and watercolor backdrops that seem to glow even when the book is closed. It’s a strange duet: Lassaigne provides the words steady and scholarly while Chagall responds in visual crescendos—inky sketches washes of crimson and cobalt ethereal ballerinas who look suspiciously like saints or circus performers who’ve taken a wrong turn into Swan Lake. You won’t learn how to do a plié but you might find yourself halfway convinced that roosters can waltz and angels definitely prefer a pas de deux. Why this copy is worth pirouetting over: Published in 1969 by Tudor Publishing when stagecraft psychedelia and surrealism were all cross-pollinating. Features the unlikely pairing of critic Lassaigne and painter Chagall which is a bit like having someone explain the trapeze while you’re already flying through the air. Condition: Good. Like an old playbill it’s been to the show maybe had a rose pressed inside but still flutters with magic. No ISBN because Chagall’s imagination couldn’t be catalogued by a mere number. At Crappy Old Books we like to think of this as the only coffee-table volume that might spontaneously leap into a grand jeté if you don’t keep a paperweight on it. It’s beautiful it’s odd it’s lyrical—and it may inspire you to redecorate your living room in cerulean goats and floating fiddlers. Tudor Publising hardcover
