réf. 182357Paris: Fernand Mourlot 1972. From Chagall's estate signed by artist and author First edition number 15 of 205 copies on vélin d'Arches signed by the artist and author. A novelist poet and art critic Bourniquel had been literary director of Esprit since 1957 and had won the Prix Médicis in 1970 for Sélinonte ou La Chambre impériale. Closely connected with the painters of his generation he here offers a series of reflections on Chagall's work accompanied by ten original colour lithographs. The book belongs to the later phase of Chagall's nearly sixty-year engagement with the illustrated book a medium in which the relationship between text and image offered him a continuing field for experiment. The text was printed at the Imprimerie Nationale and the lithographs on Mourlot's presses in Paris; the work was completed on 20 March 1972. This copy was retained in Chagall's estate until its sale at Sotheby's in 2025. Quarto. With 10 full-page colour lithographs on velin d'Arches paper. Loose as issued in white wrappers front cover lettered in black. Original cream cloth chemise and matching slipcase lettering to spine in gilt.
